    Scouting

The resolution of the photo is not that great in the post, so I cropped the first photo.

    scope mounting ???'s

I just got done setting up the exact same scenario for my son's .270. I ended up purchasing a set of offset rings, and it worked like a champ. If you do it this way, your base won't limit your access to the action. Just another idea.

    My 2007 Archery Elk Hunt

    Congratulations Christian! You da man!
  4. Spent 14 hours driving and glassing in the unit my son has for his Oct. whitetail hunt. These are a few of the photos. Can anyone guess the unit? The little mud wall was near a 30 foot unmarked open test shaft. The last three photos are "find the deer photos". The last one is a little blurry, but was at a half a mile through my 12 power binoculars with a hand held digital camera. Look close and you will see it. From what we could see it was a decent buck.

Not 36b. I was sure someone out there had come across the little mud structure in the photo. There can't be too many like it. Oh yea- Coues7 isn't allowed to guess either

No correct guesses yet. (YoungHunter and 1shot1kill aren't allowed to guess)

    Illegals

We had about 18 of them walk right next to our camp last year. They just put their heads down and kept walking. We had no cell phone reception. However about 4 hours later a border patrol agent in a jeep came by and we told him. We were in 36B. I was with 2ShotNoKill last year, and he isn't kidding. We had 3 well developed trails within 400 yards of our camp, and it seemed just before bed time each night we kept hearing walking sounds.

    .270 WIn Bullet Grain?

In case you are interested, here is a good site that goes over tracking and recovering wounded deer. http://www.thejump.net/Hunting_Articles/recover.htm

    .270 WIn Bullet Grain?

6.8 is the same as .270? I've never heard that before. Anyone else? I actually called Barnes and asked the same question. The diameter is identical, but it is listed under 6.8mm. I asked him if he saw any problem with loading it into a .270 and he told me that they didn't have any load data for it, but as long as I am not flirting with max loading it should be fine. I loaded 50 of them, and went out and shot last weekend. Worked like a champ. I shot one into milk jugs and recovered it. I will try to snap a photo of it and post it. Pretty potent little round for a 110 gr.

    Find the deer

No way... I have that same mossy oak steering wheel cover in my little SUV. Did your son give it to you for fathers day too?

I was fortunate enough to take this little guy last year during my October hunt. It was my first deer hunt, and hopefully more luck will follow in the coming years.

    .270 WIn Bullet Grain?

If you want a light bullet, go with the Barnes TSX 110 gr. They are not listed under the .270, but they are as a 6.8 mm, which is the exact same diameter. It will shoot flat and fast, and have awesome stopping power. I just loaded some up, and they work like a champ.

    6.8 mm

I think you meant a 3000th of an inch, which is 0.003 in.(equal to 3 mil), as opposed to "3000 of an inch", which, depending on how read, could be either 3000 inches or 3 inches (3000, thousanths of an inch). But in the end, you are right, and you da .270 Man!!! Happy loading.

    6.8 mm

Does anyone out there have load data for a 6.8mm, 110 gr. Barnes TSX bullet loaded into a 270 win? Bullet diameter is the same, but can't find load data.
  17. John O

    6.8 mm

I checked your math, and 7mm actually equals .2755 in., .277 in. = 7.0358 mm, 6.8 mm = .2677 in. To answer your question, 6.8 mm is equal to .2677 in. which is pretty close to .270. I think they at least tried to get it right this time.

    Getting a left-over tag

I just called the AZGF in Phoenix, and asked for the draw dept. They told me they are accepting applications as early as the 13th, because that was the original date on the reg's, and those without computer access may not have heard about the change to the 20th. On the 21st, all of the applications received will go into a pile, and they will be drawn. This sounded different than what the reg's stated, and so I called back and actually asked a different person in the draw dept., and got the exact same answer. As you know I am trying to get a tag for my son, so I am trying to give him the best chance. It does seem a little misleading for them to tell us the draw is first come first serve starting on the 20th, when they are accepting applications starting on the 13th, and that it is a draw. It might not be a bad idea for others to call, to verify the information I received.

    Checks cashed

Cohofishing, If you are talking about the class at the Harrison shooting range in Tucson, my son will be in that class. Did you say your daughter has taken it before? If so, can you give me an idea of how he runs it, and to what level the kids stay interested for that many hours a day. Also, I noticed that the session a week earlier has one less day of class. I don't know why, but maybe it is a misprint. Thanks.
  21. Why in the world would they spend the majority of the time at the Tucson meeting talking about turkey management? That's like going to Flagstaff and spending most of the time talking about javelina management. Get real, they are going to do whatever they want, but they have to act like they are interested in the public input before they make it final. That way if people complain after the fact, G&F can site how many public meetings they had, soliciting input on the proposed changes. It is all about $$$$$. As long as the bucks are rolling in, they are happy. If they see a way to squeeze out a couple of more bucks out of us, they will find a way to mask it as conservation, or hunter quality, or whatever, and do it. For example- Out of state trophy bull hunters will pay anything to come here and hunt. G&F saw huge potential dollars in this, but the snag is that you can put in for bull and cow elk on the same application. Solution- Charge all out of state hunters $600 to hunt any elk in AZ (not including hunting license). This is great if you are an in state cow elk hunter, because your odds just went up. However, your buddy from outside the state will never hunt here again for cow, because he can get a combo tag in CO for less than $500. Whatever.
