    Sheep

The photo was actually taken near Hoover Dam. The big ram actually ran into the side of a Honda CRV in front of us, denting up the side and tearing off the rear view mirror. Then just stood there staring the lady down for about 10 minutes.

    DRAW RESULTS UP!!!!

33 late Jr. hunt for my son. 36b early November coues for me. Time to GET R DONE!!!!!!!!!
  4. After spending over $200 on game processing last year, I would like to pick up a decent meat grinder. Cabelas sells one for $139 that looks decent. If anyone has experience with these, or other good grinders under $200, I would appreciate the information.

    Big Lake fishing?

I will share with you my ancient Chinese trout catching secret (even though I learned it from a redneck from Louisiana). I was up there last month and caught a 12 and 13 inch brown, and a 10 inch rainbow in two hours. Here is how you set up your line. Slip sinker, swivel, 3-4 feet of line, med size hook. Bait your hook with 3 items- First a garlic marshmallow, second a small piece of worm, and then put a salmon egg on the tip covering the barb. Cast it out as far as possible. Let it sink to the bottom, then reel it in until the swivel snugs up to the slip sinker. Give the line some slack, so when they hit the bait, there is no resistance. The marshmallow makes the bait float, and the combination of the three baits drives them wild! Don't set the hook on the first tug, because they are just nibbling on the little buffet you have set up for them. On the 3rd or 4th tug, set it and reel them in. I have caught them all times of the day this way. Good luck!

    Anyone know?

I hesitate a little to post this, out of respect for the individual that was honored with this. I came across this really cool memorial last year, and was wondering if anyone knew who this was, or the story. It was in a very remote area, that will most likely get grown over, and not seen, except for those who put it there. Would prefer to keep the specific location private.
  7. Got these photos up near big lake last week. I'll bet that area is a war zone during cow hunts.
  8. Came across this on AZGF site. This seems to change a lot about how things are currently done for hunt dates. Does anyone know if this is expected to affect all units, or just some, or if it is even a real possibility? It would potentially move the Nov. whitetail hunt to the last week of the month. Snakes

My son and I almost walked right into this little dude at the end of a day dove hunting. I HATE RATTLE SNAKES!! We were looking ahead of it as we walked, and when it started rattling I went numb from the top of my head to my feet. Seeing that it was an area that is frequented by kids with dirt bikes and quads, I let my son shoot it with his 20 gauge. It did the job.

    First time swimming....

You scared me to death Jim! Wouldn't open this for a couple of days out of fear that you were going to show photos of yourself learning how to swim in some camo pair of Daisy Dukes or something. Thank goodness it was your dogs. What a relief!!!!
  11. I came across this "quiet muzzle break" by David Gentry. They claim that it does not increase the muzzle noise to the shooter. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this? I would like a break on my 300 mag, but value my ears too much, so I endure the recoil. This one may be an option, however I don't know if I trust their claim. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/Pro...ET+MUZZLE+BRAKE

    Quiet Muzzle Break

For those who do not understand the dB units, I want to just add a little to what is stated above, to provide some perspective. dB is unit of mathematics related to an exponential scale, not a linear scale. That means that a 5-10 dB increase of a 100 dB sound does not mean a 5-10 % increase. The best way to think of it, is that for every 3 dB increase, you double the value you start with. So 103 dB is double the sound of 100 dB. 109 dB is more than 300% increase in the sound level of 100 dB, and so on. The other direction works similarly. For every 3 dB reduction, the sound level is reduced by half. So a 100 dB noise reduced to 97 dB is cut in half, and so on. A 30 dB rating on ear protection is over 98% reduction in noise. The reason I am so sensitive to this, is on my first game hunt I shot a pig with a .357 magnum, and my ears physically hurt for several weeks. I vowed never to make that mistake, so this year I carried around a set of muffs in one hand the whole hunt. I even missed an opportunity early in the day, while putting them on. In the end I was able to harvest a nice pig, with my muffs on, and no ear ringing! I refuse to end up that old grumpy geezer in the assisted care home, that can't hear anything, and is too stubborn to wear a hearing aid.

    Monster

Came across this little feller while hiking on Saturday. By far the biggest one I have seen.

    Changes in 2008

Just guessing here, but common sense seems to indicate that these hunts would be put in place in the southern half of the state where elk are somewhat rare and Coues deer are somewhat common. -TONY I know we will find out tomorrow, but Tony- Have you heard any updates on this? Sounds like the fall deer seasons may undergo a major overhaul.

    New To Me

Has any one else had the same safety issue with the Basix trigger? I just ordered one for my Savage 110 300 mag, and that makes me nervous as anything!!!

    236" Non-Typical Muley

Negative. Public land. Of this I am positive IT was indeed public land and it was just outside of Sierra Vista! Those were the photos I had, but the information turned out to be bad. Apologies.

    236" Non-Typical Muley

Killed down by Douglas on a private ranch, from what I was told. I have the photos on my computer, but like others do not have permission to post. Pretty awesome for a desert muley!

    36C Scare!

I have been in the depths of 36b hunting whitetail for the last two years for a total of 10 days. We have seen some crazy stuff too. We had a suburban drive past our camp several times, full of kids, and waive to us like they are out for a joy ride. This is more than 10 miles into the mountains, on some really nasty roads. About 30 minutes after passing us once, this old hispanic guy, about 70 years old, walks past our camp wearing a blaze orange shooting vest (the ones that are $2 at Wal Mart), and carying a 30-30 with a scope on it. No backpack, no water, and no one with him. He muddled off some broken english that he tried to shoot a buck but missed, but clearly he was making it up. Just weird! The best advice I could give is to go take a CCW class so you CLEARLY understand the laws associated with when you can or cannot use deadly force. Understanding these laws before you encounter the situation allows you to have made the decision before an incident occurs, especially in defending third party individuals. Second point is to always be with someone. I still find it hard believe that these guys would challenge you like this (not that I don't believe you, but I think they were absolutely nuts for surrounding you like that). Most hunters are armed, and hunt in groups, and they are just asking for a buddy on an opposite hill to start taking chest shots at 200 yards. I have 4 friends who work border patrol, who all gave me essentially the same advice about hunting down there. Most of the illegals will not bother you, they just want to make it across. Most of the drug runners walk at night, and then stash their loads and sleep during the day. Not to say that this will ensure safety down there, but there is something to be said about doing your homework, becoming legally informed, and hunting in groups.

A boy and a pig (updated)

After last years valiant effort for whitetail, we decided to give Javelina a try for my son. On our second day, he was able to take this little guy at 130 yards with his 270. First big game, and even though he was small, it was a trophy. My son just turned 11, and is now officially in the big leagues. (Date is wrong in the photos)

A boy and a pig (updated)

A boy's dad, and his pig- After a lot of hard work on opening day HAM, I was blessed with this opportunity. The lesson learned for me was to never give up. I had literally done all I can, and physically gone as far as I could and turned around to head home. For some reason, I decided to take one last look across the canyon I was at, and that had acted as the physical barrier that told me that I was done. At that very moment, a Javelina wandered out from behind a boulder on the other side. I made my way to 50 yards, put on my muffs (last time I shot my 357 magnum without them, my ears hurt for two weeks), and made a great shot. Every hair on its body seemed to immediately stick straight up all at once. Just to make sure, one more shot, and it dropped where it was standing. I was relieved, exhausted, and thrilled, all at the same time. A little time to carve it up, and a 2.5 mile hike out with a 30 pound pack, that felt like 50. A day, and a lesson for me that I will always remember.

Awesome Jim! Thanks for the story.

    Javelina and Mountain Lions

OK Jim, I have another idea that I just can't help post. It seems that in all your posts, there are 2-3 photos of these great animals with the hunters you have guided, and then all of a sudden, Jim appears. The look is the same, the smile is the same, the only thing different is the camo! It's like the Where's Waldo books for kids. If you look hard enough, he always ends up there in the background with that smug little smile. So, how about a "Where's Jimbo" book for red neck kids. I know it would be a great hit! The kids would line up for a mile at Barnes and Noble (or maybe at the circle K) for a signed copy.
  24. So I found a pretty good spot for my son to hunt Javelina for his Jr. Hunt. Went out with my boys, and tracked them and felt pretty confident in our location. Went back last week for one last scout, and low and behold there were mountain lion tracks all around the area that the herd was bedding down. It also seemed that there were several places where a struggle had occurred. From what my friend told me (who has seen the herd several times), there are anywhere from 8 to 15 javelina in this group at any one time, and the tracks show at least 3 little ones. The question I have is, do mountain lions generally go after Javelina? I know coyotes don't mess with them much, but it sure seemed something in the dynamics of this group has changed since seeing these tracks. Also, my friend has not seen the herd in a couple of weeks.
