How often do coues deer drink water?

Interesting you should say that. So I spent a fair amount of time sitting a tank in Aug/Sept, and found that there was no drinking(water) between 5 am and noon, and between 4:30 pm to dark. From noon to 4:30 there were deer coming in consistently about every 40 minutes, and was a consistent mix of coues does, mulie does, and whitetail bucks. The temperatures were near 100 degrees each day. In contrast, I hunt another area where there are 3 cattle drinkers that I can observe as I glass. I found that the whitetail bucks drank at first light, the whitetail does drank later in the morning, and the mule deer drank just before dark. If I might ask, what were the sources you read from. I would be interested in doing some more research on this.

How often do coues deer drink water?

I give up. This video does shed some light on the question however.

How often do coues deer drink water?

Thanks, however I was hoping to get some feedback of what has been observed in the field, or captured on trail cams with respect to drinking habbits. Maybe there isn't a good answer to the question. I have observed several different trends, largely based on elevation, but I don't know if I have seen enough to draw any strong conclusions.

    My 2009 Bull Elk Hunt

    Great bull, and great attitude!
  6. Spent a couple of hours down in 36a this morning. I have never seen it so dry. I checked out several tanks that were almost the size of Pena Blanca lake two years ago, that had become bone dry. Glad to see these projects going in.

    My 2009 archery coues

Great shot, great deer, great bow. Congratulations.
  8. While glassing during the fall archery hunt, I watched a guy attempt to set up a pop up blind about 10 feet from a cattle drinker, and 10 feet off of a road. This was at about 10:00 am, and it was at least 95 degrees. He struggled with it for what seemed like an hour, trying every method to get it set up. He would get it half way set up, then toss it up in the air, and try to end up in the middle of it. Poles kept popping out, and it would collapse on him over and over. He would throw it on the ground and stomp around in frustration. We laughed and laughed, wishing we had a video camera along. If that person is on this forum, thanks for the entertainment! My buddy told me he was glassing once and noticed a man and woman out hiking looking for Javelina. The dude was quite large, and struggling to keep up. Without warning he reached down, dropped his pants and underdrawers to his ankles, and began shoving TP between his legs. He then pulled them up and continued on. Evidently some serious chafing had set in, and he proceeded to hobble along bow legged trying to catch up with his wife.

    Bedded Down

The one in the middle, that looks more brown than grey. A little tough to make out the antlers, but here is another guy that was within 100 yards of the same spot 3 mornings in a row. The 4 does he was with busted me each morning.
  10. I was amazed at how many spikes and forkies there were with does during the fall archery bow hunt. I'll bet the early rifle hunt is going to be a slaughter. Thought I would post a photo of a spike and two does bedded down at about 300 yards. I stalked to within 20 yards of them, but could not get a shot off due to some thick stuff in my way.
  11. While glassing yesterday morning, I had a large group of coatimundis show up about 200 yards below me. I stopped counting at 40. It seemed like at least 3 generations were present, everything from full grown adults to little squirel sized babies. Later, while on a stalk, I had one at the base of a tree at 10 yards, sit and stare at me for a minute or so. I could have shot it, but was hesitant because I wouldn't know what to do with it after that, other than have it stuffed or tanned the skin (seems a little wastefull). I have seen these several times in the area I hunt, so I thought I would post some "cell phone through the binos" photos, and also ask what others have done with such a critter, once shot?

    First Archery Elk

Congratulations to you and your success! Although some may disagree, I feel any big game animal with a bow is a trophy. Great job, and enjoy the yummy cuts. John

    Game and Fish Meeting LIVE

I would like to see the max point pool second choice rule changed. My son missed out on a youth tag last year because of that. what is the max point pool second choice rule and how does that work? For my situation, I put my son in for Jr. javelina first choice, and a general rifle javelina second choice. Since he has a bonus point from hunter ed, he was put into the 20% max bonus point pool. Having not drawn first choice in this pool, he was awarded a tag for the general rifle hunt. Come to find out, there were left over tags for the Jr. hunt. I called G&F, who told me that the only way around the problem was to put the Jr. hunt down for his first and second choice. The only time this should be done is for a hunt with 100% draw odds, otherwise you may not get a tag at all. Lesson learned, I guess.

It is just one buck. He is dead center of the circle in the photo, in a shadow below the prickly pear cactus patch. Open it in a photo editor and zoom in, and you will see him. Hopefully my arrow sees his vitals come Friday.
  21. Glassed up two really nice bucks yesterday, and this is my best effort of a photo of them bedded with my cell phone through my binos. A little tough to find them, but they are there.

This is a good example of how difficult it is to glass up these little dudes. The attached photo is of a spike at about 1000 yards, taken through my binoculars.
  24. Went out for a little quality preparation for the archery hunt next month, and bagged these two dudes. I can't wait!!!
