Well my first rifle Coues hunt was a success. Took this guy this afternoon trying to sneak along the edge of some thick cover and that was that. Barely 100 yard shot. This was definitely a change of pace from my normal long range glassing and expecting a longer shot. I found a really nice area with a ton of fresh sign and plenty of deer so I ditched the conventional thinking and hunkered down on a small ridge that overlooked the edge of thick oaks a couple hundred yards long. I had seen deer coming in and out, one huge buck, a few small ones, and a few decent ones. But none of the bucks were out in the open, not surprisingly. I either glassed them up in their beds behind cover or sneaking through it. But this afternoon I forced myself to stop glassing across the field and focus on that tucked away little corner. I knew that the bucks were either crossing that area or skirting it, or they would be by next weekend as the rut kicks in. Sure enough, I watched about nine does trickle through a break in the cattle fence at the end of the corner. I glanced back to my right and saw antlers shining in the sun only 100 yards away. He was either facing straight at me or straight away so I glassed him real quick to confirm he was a whitetail and to see if I would be happy with him. My gut said to send it so I swung the rifle and shooting sticks towards him. He was mostly quartered away with his head straight away with his attention on something in the brush. I set the scope behind his front shoulder and pulled the trigger. Unfortunately he started to turn away the instant the trigger broke so the bullet went in where I wanted but came out the base of his throat. He bucked straight up and fell over dead but the cape was a lost cause. No big deal. Time to relax and be grateful. Good luck everyone. I hope you have or had success this season!

Thanks guys. It was a very enjoyable hunt after I decided not to put the pressure on myself of holding out for a giant and giant only. I watched a lot of deer doing their thing undisturbed and took a buck I was content with. Just enjoyable.

Rut activity. Anyone seeing it? I was happy to see two bucks moving with does down in the 34s this morning. Anyone else?

Who’s gonna be out this weekend with a December tag?
-
One I saw today was a very nice buck but the other one was a stud. Saw about 15 deer total. Mostly does still but it was good to see a few good bucks up moving around with them.

I’m down in the 34s doing a last minute scout and am happy to see two bucks so far already moving with does. One was 100 yards away and was a slob. Please show up tomorrow... Good luck everyone!

Yeah I was definitely glad to see the cool weather coming in. That should help.

Check unknown munitions. They load to order and it’s not cheap but they have available as of a couple weeks ago. I got some Berger 156s loaded with N665 as an emergency backup.

Reloder 16 In Stock in Tucson
broadhead replied to broadhead's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Unfortunately none of any of those. There’s barely anything on the shelf aside from a few obscure powders and some less common caliber ammo. The only exception is some 6 and 6.5 Berger and Sierra bullets and some 30 cal of the same. -
In case anyone has been trying to find some RL16, the Ace on Houghton and Valencia has some on the shelf plus a box up top.

Is it pushing the threshold of too much bullet for coues deer? I’m a little concerned that a closer shot (say inside 150 yards) might be be a mess. -
Hopefully this cooler weather gets them on their feet a little during daylight for you. I’ve been in a different unit scouting for December and same thing. Does does does. But it was still almost 80 so I would be laid up during the day too.

This is a year plus old thread but I thought someone might have put these to use on a coues by now. I have an extremely accurate load for it using N565 and am hoping the bullet performs well at distances up to about 500 yards -
Where are you located?
-
Unknown Munitions has some and will load it to SAAMI spec or to a seating depth you prefer. It’s pricey and they take a couple weeks to load it for you, but it’s available with Berger and Hornady if I remember correctly.

High Quality Silverado 1500 Truck Cover $100
broadhead replied to broadhead's topic in Classified Ads
Probably will. Mine was the 5 1/4 bed and it fit very well. I’ll ship if you don’t mind covering it. -
Just received a replacement truck cover for my 17 Silverado. The original tore and was under warranty so the company replaced it but I just sold the truck. The cover was on the truck for less than a week and is basically brand new. Also includes four clamp clips so you can attach bungee cords to keep it down in the wind. The cover is silver reflective with a soft protective felt underside. Sorry the pic is bad. Tough to get a good pic without the truck.
