  1. The more I think about it the luckier I feel to be have been able to watch one undisturbed for almost 15 minutes. Even though I know the odds of turning him up again in that spot are slim it's going to be hard to glass that area well for deer from now on. I'm going to have to fight the urge to turn my glass back to where I first saw him! It got too dark to hang my trail cam that night (and hanging out a few hundred yards from him in the dark didn't seem like a good idea) so now I really want to get out and put a couple up and see if he shows up.
  2. AZAV8ER - yes. That will be $15 well spent hahaha.

    Vortex Kaibab 15x56 HD Binos

These are really good binoculars. I got a lot of good use out of them and found a lot of deer.
  4. Couldn't figure out exactly where to place this thread so I'll just put it in here. Due to access issues I'm forced to mostly hunt the western slopes of the Santa Rita's down here in 34a. That means I have to spend a lot of my time glassing toward the east, which sucks in the morning for obvious reasons and I try to avoid it. I try to play the sun behind me when glassing whenever possible. How much consideration do you guys place on which direction you glass at first and last light when the sun is at its lowest angle? I get focusing on north facing slopes once the sun gets higher to pick apart the shade but what about early and late? Does that rule still apply or should I try to get the best vantage point of likely travel areas while they're up and moving in the early and late hours to avoid fighting the sun in my eyes? Thanks!

    Which directions do you glass?

Cool thanks again for the input guys. As soon as I can free up the cash I want to take Duane Adams glassing class. Until then Im going to keep the advice you guys shared in mind when I hit the mountain in the next couple weeks. Good luck to everyone. The season is getting close.
  6. Looks like the portal hit so you guys know when and where youll be hunting. Im in. You guys gave the tags so get an idea where you want to start looking and lets hit the hills!

    WTB Swarovski 12x50 EL

If I'm not mistaken the field pro comes has a different outer coating. The fixed objective lens covers might be another difference but I'm not sure if that is a feature of the other versions as well.
  8. Since the results will be coming out soon and you guys are starting to narrow down the hunts you'll be getting let's trade a few PMs and see who wants to get out there. I completely struck out (not surprised since I only applied for December) so I was planning on getting back out to 33 to try to find the buck that eluded me last year but I can make a day trip or pack my camping gear and spend the night if I can find some water to top off while I'm out there. Hopefully the monsoons will help with that once they start up. Anyway let me know.

Under Armour Scent Control Realtree Jacket 2XL $60

Tucson. Sorry, I forgot to add that.
  10. For sale Never used Under Armour hunting jacket in Realtree Xtra pattern size 2XL. Literally brand new. Medium weight, great for sitting on cool mornings. Located in Tucson.
  11. I was really surprised hiking in last year in the dark by how many sets of eyes I caught just off the trail in the light of my headlamp. They were definitely keeping a close eye on me but were very relaxed even within 5-10 yards, just watching me. Of course once the light started to peek out they would flag and scoot immediately. Really caught me by surprise but what you guys are saying about treating darkness like cover seems to be very true. I highly doubt the more mature bucks are tolerating anything to that extent but it's interesting to see the difference in behavior from darkness to light.
  12. Hey fellas, Sorry I've been slow to respond. I've just been really tied down with just about everything EXCEPT hunting and scouting the last few weeks and will be for a couple more. Seeing as there's a few of us in the area and since draw results will be coming out before too long why don't we get together and see if we can scout an area? Like I said in my OP I don't have any tag envy and I don't have any problem helping someone else find some bucks if they draw a tag so long as everyone tries to help each other out and put in the work. I put in for a December tag for 34A and 33 but I'm painfully short on points so there's barely any chance I get drawn. I'm counting on bowhunting. Anyway we should figure something out. Scouting season is here and hunting will be right around the corner. How is it almost July already?? b
  13. heck yeah. I've had a few messages but nothing set in stone. If you draw a tag or just want an extra set of eyes when you go scout let me know. I just got my backpacking camping gear and want to spend a few nights out there so I can get away from walking miles in and out each night. Kills me every time, especially in this heat. I put in for the late hunt for 33 and 34a but don't expect to draw so unless I get a solid feel for 34a I'm looking at bowhunting 33 again. But let me know and when my schedule free up in a week or two I'll be game.

First Lite Woodbury Jacket in Cipher 2XL $190

    Bump one time
  15. Selling my First Lite Woodbury jacket in Cipher size 2XL, $190 or reasonable offer. Used it last season while tree stand hunting in Wisconsin and it worked great. It's a little too heavy for my purposes most of the time down here in Arizona so I decided to put it up for sale. Like new condition. Send me a PM if interested.

    SOLD - Please Delete

**SOLD** The garage sale continues! I have a Savage Arms Model 64 .22 LR that I won a few years back that has never been fired and has sat in my gun safe the whole time. Asking $90 (Cabela's lists it at $130 online). I already have a .22 and have no need for another one so I figured I'd put it up for sale and see if anyone is interested in it. No damage or wear on it. Open sights are on it and it comes with one magazine. Located in Tucson. PM if interested please.

    Bump once
  19. Cool sounds like I'll have no issues then. I spent the money on great 12x glass so if I get up and out a ways I'm still fine. The main question with this particular spot (and the initial reason for the question) is I'm up at a better vantage point but it's a narrow north/northwest facing bend in a canyon thick with manzanitas so unless you can get up and use proper glass the mature bucks aren't showing themselves much during daylight. At least not until January when the younger bucks started drawing them out of the cover to defend their turf (one of the most entertaining displays to observe though). The vantage points I found right at and inside of 500 offer so with proper glassing and getting above them I'll be in a great spot to pick them off while they're bedded. Glad that won't be leaving me too exposed. You guys are great for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Anyone else ready for fall? b
  20. I did some digging around but couldn't find an answer to the specific question that has come up the last few days as I've started taking another look my glassing spots from last year. This will only be my second season hunting in Arizona so I obviously am still learning the ropes when it comes to spot and stalk hunting and glassing open terrain. I generally understand deer eyesight but as the post title suggests I'm wondering how close is too close as it pertains to simply making it too likely a deer will pick up on your presence even when you're careful hiking in and generally still and quiet while glassing. Last year I spotted a few bucks in a very nice, largely ignored canyon and want to get back in there this coming year. Looking at maps and Google Earth I identified a couple glassing spots that will provide a much better vantage point into the food and cover, but they're within about 500 yards and even up to just over 300 yards away from the areas I know will hold bucks. (I was a little lucky to see a few bucks last year and know I need a better vantage point this year if I want to find deer again. I guarantee I missed most of the bucks in this spot last year.) To be clear this is all assuming I'm obeying the wind and still moving slowly and quietly as I would any other time. Will this glassing spot be pushing it too much? Thanks! b
  21. Okay thanks guys. Sounds like I won't be pushing it too hard as long as I stay disciplined in all the other areas, which I should be doing anyway (noise, movement, silhouetting etc). My main concern setting up inside that range was being picked off and spooking a buck even while being careful while making unavoidable subtle movements like turning my head, adjusting the binoculars etc but from what you guys are describing it sounds like I should be okay. Question answered. Thanks again. b
  22. Alright that makes me feel a little better about it. Thanks fellas.

    Which directions do you glass?

Thanks guys, this really helps. I noticed last year even in the summer that the deer would move early in the morning regardless of where the sun was. I think I've been too focused on glassing only west and north facing slopes and as a result have missed a lot of deer and ended up looking into the sun in the mornings way more than I ever had to. Thanks again for the advice!
  24. Right on man that's great but I definitely want to make sure that I can put in work behind the glass too, not just take advantage of guys' hard work for the purpose of finding the good spots. It would be mutually beneficial to me even if I just scout during summer and fall for someone who drew a rifle tag since I'll be hunting the same grounds come late archery. It would get me out more often and give me the initiative to stay focused while also getting a better feel for the land. But heck yeah anytime you want to come down I'm in. Thanks!

    Midwesterner Heading SW

I have to admit that I laughed out loud while reading the report from the 2017 hunt. And only because I know a bunch of people out there were wondering why a football game is important enough to leave a deer stand on an away trip during the rut. It takes a Packer fan to understand... Packers - Cowboys, divisional round GB 34-31, Aaron Rodgers and "the throw" the Jared Cook. I would've been out of the blind watching that game too hahaha. Speedy, I just moved minutes away from north side of 34a and hunted 33 last season. It took awhile but I found a few bucks once they started getting on the does during the rut. If you come down this way you're more than welcome to come out with me and try to fill your tag. There is no shortage of deer around. I doubt I'm going to have much chance to hunt the early archery season this year due to work and school but I still plan to get out and scout as much as I can so when December and the cool weather/rut rolls around I'll have a line on a few bucks. Send me a PM if you're ever interested. PS where in Wisconsin are you from? I'm from south of Green Bay.
