Trying to help a couple of newbies.

For 36B anywhere south of ruby road is good. If they are looking to tag out then it will be a good chance for them to glass and pick their deer. If they are looking for a trophy then they will have a lot of glassing and waiting to do. There are some very nice bucks in the area but there will also be a lot of other hunters looking for the same bucks. A friend got a decent 3X3 last year in this unit 400 yards from another group of hunters. They glassed it first so we gave them first crack but they passed cause it wasn't what they wanted. My group got drawn for 36B this year as well. There will be 9 tag holders in our camp so we are not going to be super picky. You also have to remember that that area is right on the border and there is the issue with illegals in the area. Good rule of thumb don't pass on day 1 what you would shoot on day 5.

    Hunting mistakes and misses

This isn't a big game hunt and was about 20 years ago to boot but what the heck its still good for a laugh ( After the fact ). Was out hunting cotton tails with my little brother. I was 16 and he was 14 at the time. Being the older and better shot I had taken the 22 rifle and he had taken my dads break barrel 16 ga shot gun with bird shot since he didn't have to be as accurate. Well we were walking through a push area west of Heber and I spot a bunny. Line up take the shot and miss well this bunny runs around a pushed juniper and up into a hollow trunk that's laying over. Well I walk over to the stump and see its only about 2 feet long so I think I can reach up in and drag him out. (Don't get ahead of me now this doesn't end how you think) Well I reach up into the stump and I can just barely touch the fur but cant get a grip on him. Well I think to myself ill go to the end and bang my rifle on it and scare him out where I can get a shot at him. well as I go to walk to the back my little brother comes running up to see what I am after and I real quick explain that the bunny is in the trunk. Well I am standing right next to the base getting ready to bang on it and my lil bro yells ILL Get HIM. Before I can think or react he shoves the barrel of that shot gun all the way into the trunk and pulls the trigger. Well the trunk exploded and I thought I died. Several minutes later after I stopped screaming I realized that I wasn't going to die at least not right then anyway I start patting my self all over and wiping the blood from all the places I was bleeding from. Eventually I realized that the only damage I took was from the fragments of the stump exploding and that I am not seriously hurt. Well I get a case of the giggles that I cant stop and my little brother starts crying and cant stop because he still thinks im gonna die and the giggles are the end approaching. Well I finally stop laughing and convince him that I am going to be alright and he gets a cheesy grin and starts looking around. I ask him what he is looking for and he says the rabbit. I show him the red spray around the remainder of the trunk and the little pieces of fur and flesh laying all over and explain to him that he must have had the barrel of that great bug gun pressed right up against that poor little rabbit when he pulled the trigger. We both got our butts whipped by my dad after we told him what happened. My little brother for not being safe and me for not making sure he was being safe. Could have ended badly but still one of the best memories I have of hunting with my Little Bro.
  3. I have been out hunting many times and found deer and elk both with only horns or head/cape removed and the rest of the animal left to rot. I understand some are only interested in the trophy but to waste all that meat should be a crime. There are hundreds of people that are more than happy to go with you and process the animal if you don't want it but every year I find more bodies. Last year went with friend who I had never gone with before. After days of him passing on every buck he saw because "Its not big enough" he finally got a nice buck in 36B. I nearly lost my mind when he proceeded to remove the head and cape with every intention of leaving the meat to rot. I took the meat of course but will never go hunting with him again. If your going to kill a food animal you owe it to that animal to take more than a trophy. The best hunting trips I have ever been on were not the best because we got the biggest animal but because of the time spent with good friends and family. The worst trips have always been dominated by someone's quest to get the biggest and it has ruined several hunts and is a primary reason I wont hunt with some people. When people ask me to go hunting with them if all I have heard is their stories about how big the animals they take are or how big the animal they are looking to take has to be I just say no thanks im gonna be busy. Why go with someone who is going to get upset when that trophy animal doesn't show up and then piss and wine on the last day of the hunt when they get nothing or had to settle for a 3X3. Hunting hasn't changed. The people that are out hunting have. For every respectable hunter out in the field there are 10 that are not.
  4. I'm guessing your talking about the Alamo lake area. Was reviewing the maps and it does look very promising at the northern end. I greatly appreciate the info as it gives a possibility for both elk and Feral pigs. Maybe able to get out that way in a couple of weeks to do some scouting. Getting too hot to plan on taking an animal (I refuse to take an animal if its going to spoil before I can get it packed out) but if scouting is successful will have a good idea where to look when it cools down a bit.
  5. Also I just received confirmation from Tim at AZGF that the population in 13b is still viable and stable though small and is still mainly isolated to the black rock and mud mountain area. The update is nice since the info on the web site has not changed since 2012. He said that he doesn't get reports very often from weekend hunters having luck only people that have spent about a week at a time out in the field and he also said that hunters using dogs trained to track pigs have been reasonably successful. Not planning to use dogs but don't mind spending the time in the field.
  6. Yes I said snarky it was a more appropriate choice than what I initially wanted to say but I am trying to be polite. Yes I will acknowledge that I have not posted much as I am a fairly new member to this forum but not new to the site. I had been looking at the site for a long time and decided to stop being a lurker and join. As far as the OTC elk that is already in the works as well. Not much choice since no one in my group was drawn this year. The feral pigs were just something to add to it so that the elk are not the only egg in the basket. We have also put in for deer and turkey on this draw. Like I said I am researching options the pigs looked like a good option as they are invasive, destructive and unregulated. I am also waiting to hear back from a family member in Farmington New Mexico about a possible hog hunt in his area. If he is able to give me good info then I will let everyone know what areas are recommended and any contact info I am able to get to help others that might be interested in going to New Mexico for hogs.
  7. I am waiting for the Packet for 13B and also have a few other places that I am looking into. The Topok pigs are in the refuge so I know I cant hunt them they killed or trapped 170 of them in the past couple months in the refuge. I was hoping somebody Knew if they come out on the northern end of the refuge. Looks like a lot of AG fields and I know how pigs love to rip them up. For those who posted info to help thank you very very much your responses were a huge help. Due to the snarky responses from some of the members I feel the need to clear a few things up. I wasn't expecting or asking anyone to tell me drive down forest road such and such or go to water hole near here or there. I was just looking for a little more information as far as what units to look in. Me and my friends are not afraid to put in the work to scout a unit and we are not looking for a hog behind every tree or trophy hogs as some member posts suggested. We know these animals will be a tough hunt and that we are going to have to work to get them. They are not going to be a weekend warrior kind of hunt. I have been researching them for months and we plan to spend 2 weeks in the field at a time. We are all looking to fill freezers we are not interested in trophy anything thats why I said feral domestics were fine as well. To Those who posted those type of comments your self important ignorance is showing. Just didn't want to waste my time scouting units where there are none and thought fellow hunters might understand and at least point me in the right direction.
  8. Me and several friends 8 to 10 people are looking to hunt some pig. Let me be clear we are not talking about the little javies we are looking for wild/feral hogs doesn't matter if they are escaped domestics. I have been all over the net looking for information and have seen a few stories but nothing in the past year that I can make a good plan on. I have seen the info on game and fish about 13B but the information has not been updated in at least 5 years. I have also heard about the ones in the Havasu refuge but have not been able to find any reliable info about hunting for them outside of the refuge. If anybody can point me in the right direction of some public land hunting for these animals it would be greatly appreciated. I live way up north so northern AZ is preferred but willing to travel if a decent sized population is accessible. I definitely want to stay in state though, like I said any recent reliable information would be greatly helpful. Not looking for somebody to give up their honey hole location just get me in the right area and definitely not looking for a canned ranch hunt. If there was some private land that was having trouble with them and wanted help eliminating/reducing the population I would also be willing to do that just not interested in paying some farmer to kill a pig that's tearing up his property. The whole point of hunting is to get out and do the leg work to get the animal. Would love to be able to do a hunt soon and then maybe another one in the fall around October.
