  1. I have four antelope hunts available for a ranch that is about 45 min North of Carrizozo, NM. These are fully guided and outfitted with accomidations during the hunt. Hunter is responsible for transportation to and from and the out of state license fee. The hunt cost is $2000. If anyone is interested they can contact me at 505-418-7985. Should be a good hunt. The bucks seem to have done quite a bit of growing despite the drought. Thanks. Nathan Wenner

    Hunting and College

That sucks for students. I know in NM you just have to have completed a semester and have proof of being in school to qualify as a resident.

    White Sands coues?

I've heard of that coues taken out of the mountains just south of Magadalena that Josh is talking about, but I've also heard of coues in the Organ Mts by Las Cruces. Those are the farthest east Ive heard of them.

    Elk Shed

Didn't find any coues sheds this weekend, but came out of the woods with a good shed off an elk. It scored 164". It has awesome bottom points. I will try and get a pic up tomorrow afternoon sometime. It is the biggest shed I have found to date. Here they are Nathan

    Elk Shed

Yeah, that would be nice to find that bull to at least get some live video and pictures. I wish I could draw that unit where I found the shed, because I know some areas with some big bulls in there. Maybe one of these days Ill get lucky.

    Success

I didnt get a deer, but saw 6 bucks. I only got to hunt one day of the 5 day season. Of the 6 two of them were coues, one was a big 100"+ buck the other a forky. The rest were legal muledeer. I could have shot them, but decided to hold out and see if I could find that big coues in the evening. Total I saw about 30 deer in the one day of hunting.

    Unit 22 Toad

That is a toad. Congrats to your friend on an awesome buck. I only got to hunt one day this year and saw a buck that was around 100" at first light, but couldn't get close enough before he moved into the thick stuff. I sat around all day glassing that area and he never came out again. Awesome buck.

    A Big NM Bull

Tommy, no I didn't get the chance to help on those elk hunts. I have not heard how they did yet. It was a tough year this year for elk in the unit we hunted. I hope they had better luck.

    A Big NM Bull

Here are the pics of the bull my uncle killed this past saturday. I had scouted an area in the summer and found good elk sign and seen a couple of big bulls. My uncle just got back from Iraq and was relying on the information I had found earlier in the summer. We headed off on friday and backpacked the 7 miles into are camp. We didn't see any sign on the way in. I was hoping the bulls had moved higher into the high country, but I got the feeling the rut was still on, and the bulls were low down in the private land. Anyways, the next morning we woke up and hiked to the highest point in the area. We did not see a single track or any other fresh sign. My uncle and I decided to try looking into a few more canyons, and if we still didn't see anything we were going to leave that area and head to the north end of the unit to a new spot (Where my dad killed the bear). We started glassing a canyon that had some burned areas in it. We glassed for about half an hour, then my uncle said I see a bull. Neither of us could tell how good it was as it moved into a thick area just as he saw it. We decided to leave him alone for the moment and check some other canyons. Those all came up empty. On the way back I spotted the bull bedded in the thick stuff, and could see one good antler. I looked for a few minutes and then realized the other side was broken just above the browtine. We debated for a while and then decided to try for him since we hadn't seen a single fresh elk track yet. We moved onto the opposite side of the canyon to about 300 yards from where we had last seen the bull. We sat there until 4:45 (about two hours) then we finally picked him out again. He was moving though and went over the ridge before we could get a shot. So, my uncle and I bailed off the hill and ran up the other side. We spotted him across the canyon heading for the ridge. I told him that the bull was 235 yards and he shot. The bull fell instantly and rolled down the hill about 40 yards before finally coming to rest. This is the only elk I have seen that I thought would do over a 1000 pounds easy. The good side scored 174", giving 16" (the brow tine length on the broken main beam side) for the busted 1-3 points. Had this bull not been broken he probably would have been between 380-390 points. The tracks he left were the only tracks we saw on the hunt. We packed him out a different way then when we came in. My uncle was happy to have the meat, but still would have liked it if the other side had been there. Sorry for the bad pics, but the camera was having some problems and only worked some of the time.

    A Big NM Bull

Yeah, I've thought about what might have snapped this bulls main beam, and I think it probably was a really old bull that had short massive antlers...lol. In all honesty though, I would also like to have seen the bull that snapped his beam just to know whether or not it was a bigger or smaller one. Another interesting thing about this bull was that it had a broken leg from years prior. There was about a 3" chunk of bone that was fused into the main leg bone just above the joint in the back leg. Looked like he had had a rough life.

    A NM Bear

This weekend while elk hunting my dad got lucky and found a big bear. He made a good shot on him at 275 yards. They didn't score on an elk, but the bear makes up for it. This one is going to be close to the 21" mark. The hide measured 7' 5" from tip of nose to tail. I will let my brother fill you in on the details. Nathan

    A NM Bear

Yeah, that is his first bear. It's going to be a tough one to beat I think. We'll see if it the skull breaks 21" or not. I'd bet its going to be close.

    A NM Bear

I'd bet he weighed between 400 and 500 pounds. I didn't get to be on that hunt, as I was helping my uncle get an elk. My brother will probably post on here and give you his estimation on the weight. The hide weighed about 90 pounds alone, so he was quite a bit bigger than that. I will post some elk pics in a new thread. It is a 7mm Rem Mag case on the paw. Nathan

    Junior Hunt Success

Awesome muley. I saw a coues buck once with almost an identical antler configuration as that buck. It was a 6x7 with the crowned fronts. Tell the hunter congrats on an awesome deer.

    Scouting Pics

Nice pictures for the range. It is hard to see them other bucks in there. I think I have spotted 3 of them so far.
