Hey Nick, I have a cabin in 5a and know it really well. I will be up there most of November hunting late archery bulls and helping on a bunch of hunts including late rifle 5a and 5bs. 5a is loaded with bulls and you’ll be just fine. Shoot me a PM and I will offer a bit of advise I think will pay dividends. Mark

Awesome video and hunt! Just miserable enough weather and terrain to appreciate it fully 👊

Hey Amigo, I do a lot of personal training and spend tons of time in the mountains with tons of people of varied fitness levels. I can tell you a few things with certainty. Bikes, treadmills, stairclimbers, running, walking-all cardiovascular fitness. Great for heart health and absolutely very good supplements to a well rounded workout program but should not be at the core. A key thing to remember is muscle mass loss starts in our early 30’s and continues at a steady rate of about 1-2% a year. So without putting our muscles under stress regularly we get weaker with age. without muscle mass stress on ligaments, tendons, joints, and bone structure increases leaving guys going “huh, I have bad knees now”. When in fact a guy has 20 extra pounds “fat” , significantly less muscle to support extra load, and now joints suffer. I say all that to say prioritize muscle training. For an easy starter program I recommend 3 days a week of full body training. 2-3 exercises per body part, chest, shoulders, back, core, legs, ….used weight you can move 15-20 reps and as you get more comfortable and consistent with your routine increase weight and lower reps to 8-12. Do some cardio 2-3 times a week for 20-30 minutes. And of course try to eat clean most the time….prioritize protein 1 gram per pound of your goal body weight. This is the hardest part…can’t out train a lousy diet. Once you are rolling and the gym becomes second home shift to trphyhntr routine 👊 Good luck man!! Hunting season is right around the corner!!

My son drew his deer tag for Colorado! Youth opportunities in Colorado are awesome! For those that may not know this youth get 15% preference of antlerless elk, doe antelope and either sex deer. Some great deer hunts available with 1-2 points for youth….and secondary draw opens up incredible opportunities with 100% preference to youth with no resident/non resident differentiation 👊

That is a good strategy we usually use but if your kid can draw a great hunt guaranteed with 2 points why gamble. Only so many years of opportunity to hunt with them, especially at such a reduced cost. The tag my boy drew this year we killed 2 bucks over 160 last year.

Best info on rim country in that area is Blue Ridge Ranger District (928) 477-2255

No snow except a few very dark north facing pockets…handful of sheds. Haven’t hit the “pocket” yet but hopefully soon. Lots of miles of great country 👍

I was in off 95 all over shed hunting last weekend and roads were decent. I was up there today and got a bit of snow but melting quickly. Good luck 👍

The one in the bottom picture looks much older…..the gentleman that is 😂nice job amigo 👊

Went down to our friends Texas ranch to hunt hogs and predators for a long weekend. Being a Michigan boy I would do drives during the day pushing cattail marshes using my scent and some hollering to get pigs up and pushing them to my buddy. I carried shotgun with buckshot and killed 2 under 5 yards erupting almost under foot. Heck of an adrenaline rush. At night we would use our thermals and knocked the wind out of them. We killed 34 in 4 days and my buddy took a nice bobcat. Midday we went shed hunting and did well. Texas is a place everyone needs to experience…just a different place.

Had the opportunity to head up to my good buddy’s place in Colorado between Christmas and New Year’s to help him on a special deer tag in one of Colorado’s Open Space hunts. We were able to find a great buck for him on the first day and he made a perfect shot. That freed up 3 extra days to head to his ranch to chase lions and I was able to harvest a beautiful cat on the first morning out. I’ll spare you all the read and you can watch both hunts!

It’s a riot but one thing I will advise for those applying is get in shape…..not this 5 day cardio nonsense but push heavy weight especially legs and back. I hauled 7 loads off that mountain between 9,600 ft and 11,100 last year. As far as elk numbers it is very similar to hunting Colorado backcountry early season. All of it looks great but elk are concentrated in pockets. Locate those pockets and you are money. Use downward thermals in AM and upward late morning-midday to your advantage….never compromise scent control/wind direction to chase a bugle. We hunt all day. When thermals switch we get to edges of dark timber where we know our scent is blowing into an area devoid of elk and wait for the right situation to go after a bull. it is thick so when you hear a bull most the time you are close. They do not prefer to come down to a call so get on the same elevation line before you sweet talk him in. I hope this information is helpful with the draw. I would offer to help this year but will be doing a DIY float moose hunting Alaska most of September. Good luck! -

Love that hunt…killed 4 bulls in 5 days last year on early archery. I called in 9 different bulls in one day. And my boy killed 362” bull year prior. I love it primarily because most hunters are not willing to put the work in to be successful and we never hardly see a soul. That hunt definitely favors guys who put the work in at the gym ahead of season. -
Bought this for my boy to use when we traveled to Kansas to deer hunt before he was strong enough to use a compound bow. Great condition with Plano hard case for traveling. $150 takes it

Guys and gals, We have found this bull in 5BS and would like its rightful owner to be able to tag it. It had arrow still in it and appears to have been shot in last few days. If you can tell me arrow you are shooting we will guide you to him to claim.
