    Alaska Arms Rings?

About 25 years ago I had a pair of Warne throw lever QD rings on a rifle. I expect the design you are looking at is similar. The design worked but I have never bought another set. I did feel sometimes that the clamps did not grip as tight as I would like. I do not recall any zero shift issues because of that. In the end the QD just was not really necessary for my needs. I used weaver for a while and now use picatinny. Just loosen the clamp nut and they come off plenty fast if you need to work on the rifle and want the scope out of harms way. Do you have a need to be able to remove the scope in the field without tools?

    Couldn't duck

But they can cross the road. Let me tell ya.......it's no fun hitting one at 65mph. Talk about serious damage on a guy's truck! I can still see and hear the impact as if it were yesterday. This happened in 1989. Think I'd rather get hit by that goose! Lol I hear you on the road crossing. I have had to stop and assist at a number of elk vs vehicle accidents over the years. Some very serious injuries and even fatalities. I have had a number of close calls myself both in my own vehicle and at work driving a tractor trailer. Having to lock up the brakes at 65 MPH pulling double trailers is never fun. I have been very fortunate and never hit one. One night my windshield suddenly exploded and there was something in the passenger seat of the tractor. Owls can do some damage to. I'm sure it would have been real ugly had he impacted the driver side.

All I got to say is that I am so glad that elk can't fly.

    Lost and found mountain lion

I always thought the old bridge over the Haysampa by Morristown looked interesting. One day on my way back from a delivery to Bagdad I walked down to take a closer look at it. Do you ever just cringe when you approach an old bridge like that with a loaded train? Oh yea, there were cat tracks in a puddle not far from the bridge.

That last picture really wraps it up. So much fun and excitement you just need to take a break and re-charge.

    Thinking of moving

Payson sucks. You would hate it. I suppose it is easy to have that perspective when you are on the wrong end of everyone's toilet.
  9. It will be the tailing dump for the Magma #9 & #10 shafts above Oak Flat. The material will be brought up from around 6000 ft underground. The tailing pile could theoretically reach the size of Picketpost mountain.

    Nosler LRAB Updated BCs

Better late than never? I still remember firing the first batch of those things at long range and the low point of impact. The next time I fired it was with Litz's data. Much better.

    are the lakes locked?

If the government is shut down who is going to stop you from hopping the gate? Is an unemployed government worker going to give you a citation? It would be an interesting argument in court, "Your Honor, this citation was issued by an unemployed individual and therefore can not possibly be valid".

An Open Dialog on G & F Laws

To self report or not? If you do not the list of charges potentially increases. Also, anyone other than the shooter who was present and does not report may be considered an accessory and charged. You must also consider you are being watched and someone else will do the reporting for you. If you do self report you are taking chances on what type of WM will arrive. In my experience they vary from some of the nicest people you could hope to meet to those with the personality of a coiled rattlesnake. The WM may chooses to throw the book at you but you still get your chance in front of a judge. I was recently out with a disabled veteran who shot the wrong animal. The responding WM was a great guy who based on the total circumtances of the event chose to handle it as an educational experience, just like Rossislider described above. Yes, forms were filled out and signed and the event documented but a citation was not issued. Poor and homeless near Show Low got some extra protein in their diet. Bottom line, if you screw up hunting you have just placed yourself at a fork in the road of life. Either one you take has the potential to be unpleasant.

    Zip Off Base Layer Bottoms

I seem to recall seeing sweatpants somewhere that had velcro up the side of each leg. Something like that might work as an easily removed base layer.

    Twist rate

I would just call Sierra and ask them. If it is a new product they may not have updated the website yet but they will know the answer to your question. From what I understand they are generally very helpful if you call them.
  16. Move slow. Take a few steps then wait a bit before you take a few more. If you make a little noise moving in this manner you sound much more like another animal wandering slowly through the woods. The sound of something approaching at a steady pace seems to be more alarming to deer.

    Pack Opinions

I have been looking around for a new framed pack off and on myself. For those using Kifaru do the bags come off and reattach to the frame easily? What is the difference between the tactical and hunting frame?

    Handgunners-What gun, What bullet?

Thanks. I have had it for almost 30 years. Took a few pigs along the way. I used to shoot IPSC with it. Range officers would groan when I showed up, it dented pepper poppers. I started downloading it so that did not happen. Nice gun right out of the box. It has a pivoting trigger instead of a bow trigger and comes with a clean 3 lb break from the factory. Extended slide release and safety are standard. The BoMar sight is an option. You do need big paws to be able to wrap them around the grip.
  19. Thanks for your service. Sorry to hear you are missing hunts as a result. You are not alone. The first vet my long time hunting partner and I guided with Hunts for Heroes is on the pig app with us. He lost his left leg just below the knee in Afganistan. Last weekend while hunting he was having trouble with the fit of his prosthetic leg. It turned out a cyst was developing where the leg mounted. He had it removed Friday and is temporarily in a wheelchair. My partner and I were going to head out tomorrow but he got stuck working 11 hours today and is not up for it. There is something about pig hunting that I really enjoy having the other hunters on my app right with me, hunting like a pack. I said screw it, I'm not going either. So here I am at almost midnight messing around on the computer. Hope you heal up soon and get back into the field for some good hunting.

    Bear with pistol?

Always used to worry about that when I did pack hunts in the wilderness. Still got all your toes or did he get to nibble first?

    Bear with pistol?

I put a an arrow through the side of the skull on one. I would not hesitate at all to go after one with a .357, .40. .45 or more powerful pistol. If you screw up the first shot you can re-aim and pull the trigger again a whole lot faster than you can knock another arrow.

    Handgunners-What gun, What bullet?

I usually fling arrows but if I do get a HAM tag I like to carry a Coonan Arms .357 magnum. It is a somewhat uncommon gun. If I take it hunting I load Hornady 158 XTP's for it.

Why do we love to hunt?

Both my grandfathers hunted some, in Wisconsin. My father hunted a little when he was young but gave it up before I was born. I started taking small game on my own when I was around 12 with a .22 rimfire my father bought me. My mother always happily cooked whatever carcass I drug home or back to camp. When I turned 18 I bought myself a .270 and 12 gauge. In my early 20's I bought a bow and almost completely forgot what a rifle was for quite a few years. Although my father does not hunt he will often come with me. He is a rock hound and enjoys looking for interesting rocks while I wander through the woods or desert looking for critters. My father and I did do a lot of fishing together when I was younger.

    Great grandparents hunting photos

I used to do a lot of hunting in 1 & 27 and came across a number of old log cabins over the years. I wondered what life was like for those who had lived in them. Thanks for sharing the photos.

    Nosler Prepped Cases

Good info, thanks. Out of curiosity, have you ever compared group sizes with turned necks vs. un-turned necks being the only variable? I realize that in itself (the benefits of uniforming the neck thickness) will likely vary from one rifle to another, but have you observed any noticeable difference? When I started prepping brass I began doing the following all at once. Check that flash holes are centered in primer pocket. Ream flash holes. Ream primer pockets. Turn necks. Weight sort to sets under 0.5 gr variance. I have not done isolated tests on each item but I did test a set of unprepped cases against a prepped set using a 700 .308 with R-P brass. I took a set of 10 unprepped cases from a lot of brass then prepped the rest and selected a set of 10 prepped cases to compare. I would put 2 targets out and fire 1 round from each set alternately at its respective target so no set had any advantage by being first or last. I also fired across a chrono. I reloaded the 2 sets and repeated the test a number of times. The unprepped cases ran around a 40 FPS E/S while the prepped set was around 25 FPS E/S. That is around a 60% reduction in velocity variation. At the time I did these tests I was off work for 6 months with a broken ankle and had nothing better to do than work on my guns and hang out at the range. The rifle, load and myself were all well tuned and capable of consistent accuracy well under 0.5 MOA. The unprepped set was much more likely to have fliers that opened up groups. This was just 1 load and rifle and as 10Turkeys points out another rifle simply may not show a substantial improvement, even with all the prep done. I also expect much less improvement is likely with higher quality brass like Lapua, Nosler or Norma VS something like R-P or Winchester. I have a set of Nosler brass on the shelf for my .300 RUM when the current R-P brass wears out. I was a bit skeptical when I read the "weight sorted" claim on the package. I scaled them all and was very impressed. They did an incredible job.
