Have you tried a different magazine? If the spring in the magazine does not have enough tension it may not fully engaged bolt lock.

Good Lord....What Is Wrong With ME???
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
^ The voice of reason. I'm working on or gathering parts for 6 builds right now. Anything that's worth doing is worth doing to excess! looks like I might have been pointing a finger or two and maybe even some toes at the wrong guy over in the barrels thread. -
I have been playing with the switch barrel idea on and off myself for a few years now. So much cheaper than building an entire new rifle. Have not got around to doing it yet but I have been running barrels at a torque that is easy to remove when needed. A benchrest shooter with a switch barrel suggested hand tight plus 20 degrees rotation. I have been installing barrels to that specification and none have come loose. The Remington factory torque spec is completely insane. It can rather difficult to get apart.

Nice selection of rifles. You always seem to be messing around with something different so it really seemed you would have more than 6.

When I first got back into rifle hunting after years of archery only my first rifle purchased was a .300 RUM. Having one of those as your only hunting rifle leads to very frequent barrel changes. So I'm looking at that 8-12 year barrel life expectancy and wondering how does he do it? Ah, it's the round count per year. Well, I have since added two more bolt guns to my collection and it has reduced my annual round count on my .300 RUM. How many bolt guns does does Lance have to choose from? Just give him a minute, he is taking off his shoes so he can continue counting.

It's only money. Can't spend it after you die so you may as well spend it now. Should be a sweet rig. -

Avoiding those questions may not be an option. The format may require answering of all or randomly selected questions. Best to be prepared with an intelligent response for all the questions. Ironically, I believe those are 3 of the questions that I did not respond to above. They definitely have a high potential to blow up in your face. -
It is definitely a problem I would like to have every year. One of these years I might get both the elk tag and a goat tag. With AZ antelope just ahead of September archery elk and NM antelope just after it could cause an almost unbearable amount of stress trying to decide whether to practice with the bow or rifle. The key word is almost.

I generally do fairly well as a rifle shooter. When I do my part and stay in practice I can expect 0.5 MOA or better. On Monday I found out my ability as a rifle shooter was about to deteriorate. I got a archery bull tag. When I open the safe to grab something to go practice shooting it is going to be the bow. Having said that I just got done putting in my application for general antelope in NM. Doesn't it just seem like a vicious circle at times trying to maintain a fairly high level of skill with multiple weapon choices?

Last time I re-barreled my .300 RUM I went up from a #4 to a #5. I don't flute the barrels on that rifle because they don't last real long and I'm too cheap to spend the money fluting them. If I want something lighter I take a different rifle. Yup, I'm to cheap to flute a barrel but I have the money to build another complete rifle. What is the logic in that?

Having used it above myself I have to agree that SPORT is a bad choice of words to describe hunting, especially in a debate with antis. The use of that word makes hunting come across a a game, something it is so much more than. -
That reminds me, 4/20 comin up That skunk essence might be able to get the whole group to get along in the same room.

#1 Quality time in the outdoors with friends and family. Some good exercise and great memories. #3 For thousands of years humans were a major predator in whatever ecosystem they inhabited. There are are scientific studies that conclude that the removal of a main predator will result in an overpopulation of the prey species. They then run short of food and water causing a large die off. By raising their "game" in captivity at an ever increasing rate humans are removing themselves from the historic role as a primary predator. #4 Populations can be maintained at a healthy level by controlling the human predator. The North American model has a proven track record of accomplishing this. We are also putting animals back into historic areas where they had been hunted to extinction long ago. #5 Families who hunt together share a bonding experience of a basic human need of going out and obtaining food in the manner their ancestors did. If they are successful they are rewarded with a freezer full of meat and a lower grocery bill. If they fail they still have the experience and quality time together away from all the distractions of modern life. Their licence and tag fees go to support the wildlife they hunt. How many animal rights activists make donations to support wildlife? #7 It would become a tax. Last I knew AZGFD received no tax dollars from state income or sales tax. Their funding comes from licence and tag fees along with what they get from Pittman-Robertson and possibly some lottery funds. How dose funding from animal watchers or animal rights activists compare to what is provided by hunters. #8 Is it free range? What condition was the supermarket animal raised in compares to wow the wild game animal lives? #14 We are going to kill and eat animals. If we do not hunt more animals will need to be raised and butchered to replace the loss of the meat obtained through hunting. Which life would you rather live as an animal, wild and free or on death row? #15 Give me the choice of beef steak or an elk steak to eat and I will choose the elk. Give me the choice of a domestic chicken or a few quail and I will take the quail. It is my opinion that I often obtain a better quality product hunting than I do at the grocery store. For starters the hunted animal is organic free range. What exactly does the list of the artificial ingredients in much of the grocery store meat look like? What is the additional cost to obtain free range organic at the grocery store compared to the standard death row animal? Well, I often struggle to hold my own on whatever pissing match of the week I get myself involved in on CWT. If I had the monumental task you face those are some of the thoughts I would research and try to expand on. Hit hard with Science and facts but also let some emotion that reveals your love for the sport and the animals show. Good luck Taylor. -
Pictures in the middle of the text? I never have figured that one out and gave up trying. Nobody here has slapped me upside the head (yet) and said "hey, stupid" because of it so I wouldn't sweat that. Glad to hear you had a great hunt after that drive.

Well, age may be creeping up on you but from the looks of the photos you're still creeping up on the game and getting it done. I have never been able to get both my pig and deer in January. It is something I hope to accomplish one of these years.

I could not use both these sentences in the same paragraph. I once found myself living under the same roof as Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians There were no theological conflicts but there was respect. Although it got a little testy once when the Buddhists chanting was drowning out a televised playoff game. A quick trip to the corner pub and dilemma solved. I can definitely see how you find that to be a contradiction. Like other rights freedom of religion has limits. I have heard someone describe limits on our rights like this. You have a right to swing your fist all that you want but as soon as you hit someone else they have a right to charge you with assault. Although you have freedom of speech you can not walk into a court room and just start saying whatever you want. You cannot yell fire in a crowded theater when there is not one and cause a stampede without repercussion. You cannot run around yelling you are going to kill the president without the secret service hauling you in. I admit I am reading a little more into the situation than what the news report and picture provide. I expect it was not an isolated incident but an ongoing series of events that triggered the sign. The inflicted upon comment is intended from the point of view of the non-christians who have likely had numerous situations where their common living area has been invaded by a religion they do not wish to participate in. Reverse the roles and make the christians the victim and muslims or buddists the aggressor and I would see it the same way. In this case I am of the opinion that the christians exceeded their rights by utilizing a common area for all residents when apparently all residents are not christian. If the residents were like you and your roommates one would think they could sit down and devise a schedule that would allow certain groups sole use of the room at certain times and diffuse the situation for the benefit of all.

Freedom of religion can definitely include freedom from religion. The framers of the Constitution put in place separation of church and state and freedom of religion because they wanted the citizens to have freedom from religion imposed upon them by the government or other citizens. The sign in the picture was very poorly done as it singled out one specific religion. Country music? Way too controversial I'm not going to touch that one. If that were the case, all religious practices should only take place in doors. But it is not the case, when John Leland and Isaac Backus petitioned the founding fathers to include the right to worship, they included the phrase, nor prohibit the free exercise thereof. This specifically guaranteeing you could worship outdoors and in public. (Before the bill of rights, in many states, you could not worship outdoors or in public. People were tired of this, as many groups couldn't afford a church house, and/or felt the need to proselytize and worship in public) See the book, America in Crimson Red, by James Beller, for all the gritty details about this amendment. Private property may be a different issue in this situation, but if the condo has received federal funds, they may or may not have the right to ban religious practices. I remember historical accounts of people gathering at a tree or other object for their religious service because they could not afford to build a church. Private property is the major issue here. An owner rents or leases to a variety of individuals. Each has a private area of their own and there are common areas that all share. I don't expect management has a right to ban religious practice unless such activity became a legitimate disturbance to other residents. If residents wish to practice the religion of their choice in their rooms or quietly in common areas there should be no issue. If they wish to have religious artifacts like a crucifix or buddha statue in their room there should be no issue. If they wish so sit in a common area and read their bible, quran, etc. there should be no issue. When a number of people join together and turn a common area that belongs to all residents into their church by holding a religious service the remaining residents have a right to object, it is part of their home also. I seriously doubt federal law protecting worship in public would apply to private property. Of course there is always a chance something like this could make its way to the supreme court as a constitutional issue. There may be some applicable law at state level.

I was talking to an AZGFD supervisor during a general javelina hunt. The subject of the draw came up. He said they were working on implementing a series of performance improvements over the next several years and should hopefully be able to match New Mexico in efficiency.

I got one years back when you had to use paper apps for a few years. It was a data entry error, we did not apply for that hunt. We took the attitude of who's complaining, it's a bull tag. Ended up doing alot of complaining on the hunt. There had already been archery, muzzle loader and general hunts. The elk were very on edge and easily spooked. Mornings were below 20 degrees. I remember having to thaw out my canned peaches on the stove. Dressed for that weather it was more difficult to draw a bow. I like to stalk but it was very dry and noisy. Ended up sitting water, not my favorite thing to do. It was one of only a couple of elk hunts where me and my partner both got skunked.

I do believe a trip to the basement is coming. Christian, or any other religious music, should be banned in that setting unless ALL who live there agree that it is OK. Why? Because of freedom of religion. Yes, the christians have a right to worship and I fully support it. However, the non-christians also have a right to freedom of religion. They have a right to not have the christian religion inflicted upon them in a communal area of their home. In this case the christians need to use a private location to practice their religion. Are you christian? how would you feel if I rounded up a few muslims, buddists, hindus or satanists and we came over, sat in your living room and had a religious service?

I have not changed jobs in over 30 years. While I started working for a family owned company through a series of buy outs I now find myself working for a blundering bureaucracy of an S&P 500 Company. The typical work day now starts with a healthy dose of propaganda. This morning was a bit of a shock. We were advised that the corporation had taken a stance supporting the banning of ownership of semi-auto firearms and high capacity magazines by citizens. This message was not well received at our facility by an audience containing over 50% NRA members, several of us life members However, if another company engaged in the manufacture or distribution of these firearms or components for citizens wishes to continue to employ our corporation to assist them we will gladly continue to do business with those companies. Did the board of directors get together and have a group brain fart?

On board 100%. I've always taught my kids that success isn't always about wrapping a tag. I teach them that because its how I was raised by my dad. It goes with the old adage of "A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day of work." I don't give congratulations for failures, either, but I also believe everyone should define their own success. Having said that, I really don't see the need to put that in writing and solidify it when there are much bigger issued the commission could be focusing on. As I matured as a hunter I began to realize that hunts where I failed to tag an animal gave me a greater appreciation hunts where I succeeded in tagging an animal. How can you truly appreciate success if you have not also experienced failure? I have learned to enjoy my hunts whether I tag an animal or not. Success is success and failure is failure, call them what they are. Each is a part of life and a part of learning.
