You can always have a negative vote to a post but you can't just be lazy and use the mouse. You have to think and use the keyboard. Amanda, I'm sure this was a lot of hard work on your part. I have just spent a little time looking around on the site and have no complaints with how it functions. Congratulations on a smooth transition.

It was a tax to help fund the new software.

I have hunted the unit a number of times and will be there again this year. It is a fairly small unit that is mostly quality elk habitat. If you are in the unit you are going to be close to some elk. As others have said listen for the bugles and go for it. You should have an exciting hunt.

If a podcast or other form of social media sends a bunch of hunters into a previously lightly used area you can be a sheep and just follow along or you be an individual and do the research to develop new areas to hunt that are not as crowded, at the current time. Observe the patterns of the other hunters just like you would an animal you were patterning and adapt. Even before pod casts and social media I have had to do this because to many other people figured out "my" spot and it got crowded. Pod casts and social media can rapidly accelerate the process but it has always been part of hunting.

Doing something different than your normal job can be a refreshing change of pace. My occupation is a commercial driver as in 18 wheelers. As a hobby I have and know how to operate old manual Machine Tools and assorted welding equipment. A number of years back I made a fair amount of money fabricating test fixtures for a group of Engineers working on small military and Aerospace R&D projects. I actually enjoyed it because it was so much different than driving.

A good friend is currently being scheduled for surgery to remove cancer from four different areas of her body. She is an incredible cook and enjoys making great meals out of whatever carcass her friends drag in from the woods. I would feel comfortable bringing her a skunk to cook. It would be hard to imagine a hunting season without her around.

Drowning the person who lit the fire and left it might be a more permanent solution.

Don't really have it all figured out yet, but I am smart enough to migrate and always head where the weather is nicer.

Tom, I am pretty sure one of my large coolers is the igloo you're looking for. I'll check tonight when I get home and let you know. -
Coming from the viewpoint of someone who does not own a watch and refuses to wear one. Are there other items that you would enjoy owning and your son would enjoy memories of you when he carried or used the item? A custom rifle? A high end shotgun? A nice pistol? A high end optic? I have an old Winchester single shot .22 from the 1930's that belonged to my grandfather. It isn't worth much but I always have great memories of him when I take it out for squirrel or rabbit. It is the rifle I learned to shoot with.

You never need a licence or a tag. There is never a limit and seasons are year long. The fine print? You have to be prepared for the consequences.

You say you are fairly inexperienced. If you are not already familiar with the process I recommend you learn how to bone out an animal in the field. You do not want to pack useless weight across the terrain you will likely encounter. Also check out the gutless method of processing an animal in the field. Good luck.

Hillbilly Reloading/Case Trimmer FYI

Poor mans lathe. Sometimes when someone else has found a way to screw things up you just got to get creative and continue with what you were doing. -
The deer don't read books or take classes on glassing. They are going to be where they want to be. Sure, some areas are more likely than others but never be afraid to look where you don't think they should be.

Thanks for the input. 3 for 3 positive, guess I need to order one.

Just picked one up with a straight eyepiece and need to choose a case or two for it. A light one would be nice for packing and a more sturdy one for the ATV or truck. What have cases you tried and what do you like or dislike about them.

Quite the hunting career, keep it up.Thanks for sharing.

Why the big fuss over range? On one side of my safe there is a compound bow, on the other a custom 700 in .300 RUM. On any given hunt, with either weapon, I will engage a animal out to whatever range I am able to ensure a high probability lethal hit. That range may vary on any given hunt due to my current physical condition, amount of practice, confidence in how well tuned the weapon is, etc. It is about knowing your current limits. I have seen just as many shots badly wrong under 50 yards as I have at over 500 yards. Much of this has to do with the fact that your "target" has a brain and muscles and may decide to move when you choose to shoot.

like they read a book or sumptin'! Probably took a class or two over in NM.

At least they are cheap.

I hiked the Napali Coast on Kauai years ago. It would be a good place to hunt with a spear. You often could not see far enough to need anything with better range.

December whitetail, not sure what unit yet.

Hey BUD, that was a very smart deer... Not smart enough.....it's a dead deer.

Business opportunity. Buy land right next to the roundabout and open a body shop.
