    Pointguard problems

The portal would let my partner purchase pointguard but not me. Apparently, I have been discriminated against by a computer. I called AZGFD and the technology department suggested entering the application without pointguard for myself. Then log back on to review the application on file and purchase pointguard. That solution worked for me. Just thought this might save someone a drive to a AZGFD office or getting stuck on hold.

Reminder - AZDFG Not Calling This Year

And it is all so simple next door. New Mexico takes your money when you apply. You either get a tag or the money for the tag back. No worries about credit card screw-ups when your app is pulled up in the lottery.

What Not to Do on a Javelina Hunt

Just curious, is there a "in the same day" exception to being declared an idiot?

    Rifle blueing

There is probably something in the salts and chemicals used to blue that is on a list of things they do not like. If you are not absolutely set on a blued finish have you looked at options like cerakote?
  5. I have one that is factory preset at 3 lbs, the lowest factory setting. Has anyone tried adjusting one lower than this? If so how did it go? I just adjusted my 7mm-08 trigger down a bit and thought about trying to set the AR a little lower.

How the AZ Draw Process works! Good video!!!

That is a great little video for anyone who has questions about how the Arizona draw system works. It is a bit more complicated than a straight lottery system like New Mexico uses.

    Game & Fish Department Question

I would call them before you go through the trouble of driving over. There is a good chance they can correct it in their computer with you on the phone. If that can be done then you should be able to print out a corrected licence.

    rough rider one

This made me think of two guys I met a number of times, years back. They worked for a commercial electrical contractor and I would occasionally deliver equipment to them. The two men were from the Bosnia / Serbia area and arrived here shortly after the conflict on work visas. One day I was delivering to their jobsite down by the Estrella Mountains. We were unloading a large piece of equipment when we heard the sound of fighter aircraft approaching low and fast. Work stopped for the free airshow as pairs of F-15s flew over. One of these men made the comment “they are angels”. Believing he had the wrong word I said “they are eagles”. I was corrected and learned a little about their past. The two were from an ethnic or religious group that had been targeted for genocide. They had effective infantry to cover the rear of their retreating refugee column but were attacked daily from the air. One day the planes coming to bomb them started exploding in mid-air. Another group of planes took their place and one circled in low waving its wings. The American flag was clearly visible on its tail. They were never bombed again. I stood corrected, they were angels. These were two of the most pro-American guys I have ever met and they were not even citizens. Last I knew they had applied for US citizenship. I hope they got it.

"Worst Pig Hunters in Arizona" Break Through

It was borderline ridiculous how many coues (a few really nice ones) and muleys we glassed up and watched with nothing but pig tags in our pockets during these hunts. Switch to archery and you could also have an OTC archery deer tag in your pocket and go after those deer in many units.

    Help in unit 22.

This is old information, I have not hunted 22 for pig in about 15 years. I used to turn off 188 onto 491, by Punkin Center, and get into the foothills of the mountains. I usually found pigs there. The 3 bar wildlife area farther south, by the dam, is also good. In 22 when you are off the 188 side, instead of off 87, you seem to encounter less recreational riders, shooters etc. I like it less crowded.

    rough rider one

The concept of this being a united country seems to have substantially eroded due to coddling those whose loyalties remain somewhere else. I am from a family of German immigrants. My grandparents all spoke fluent German. I was born here. I am an American, not a German. That, in many cases, no longer seems to be the prevailing attitude. I am all for keeping part of your heritage, I love a plate of brats and kraut with a dark beer.

    Hearing Protection Act

From your description of the law it sounds like that if it passes I could go chuck up some metal in my lathe, build a suppressor and be legal. Does that sound correct?

    Expert Opinion

I have always hunted elk in the archery season. I learned years ago if I could only get one week off for the hunt take the second week, later in September. The calendar definitely effects the rut. My opinion is that the weather also plays a major role. On hunts where the weather cools down early the rut seems to heat up sooner.

What Not to Do on a Javelina Hunt

The ATV appears fine in the picture, but the ground looks a little tipped. I'm laughing with you. Took me over 1/2 hour to get my first picture up. I have no idea what I would do if it came out sideways. Glad to hear everyone is OK. I was thinking that what not to do on a javelina hunt was get a javelina. I got one once that was so tough my rottweiler chewed on a piece for a bit, spit it out and looked at me like "what did I do to deserve that?" Actually the last one I got was real good. They really seem to vary.

"Worst Pig Hunters in Arizona" Break Through

I told myself years ago if I ever tried to design my own camouflage I would try to copy the javelinas coat. The way they can blend in and just disappear is incredible. I lost track of one this year that was 150 yards away in plain sight, just stationary.
  16. Awesome job, i don't think I would have had the patience to keep at it when I was 15. I expect I would have grabbed a rifle after my first failed attempt with a bow.

    Looking to team up

May I suggest another strategy? Keep saving up points til the kid is a bit older and will make a good pack mule. Then go bag a big bull. Chris and I carried his sons Javelina out for him. He made a deal with us he would carry something out for us when he gets bigger. I believe that will be the easiest elk recovery we ever do. LOL.
  18. Hit the range today for the second time after a 5 month absence. First I fired the 7mm-08AI. I got the scope roughly zeroed the last time I was out. I used my H4895 load with a 139 SST swapped in place of the 140 BT. The SST is a bit cheaper so I used them for powder tests and still had some. Zeroing a scope seemed like the time to use some up. My previous experience with them in this gun was they were not quite as accurate as the BT but it was not a huge difference. Photo 1 7mm-08 AI 5 rounds group 1 Photo 2 7mm-08 AI 3 rounds group 4 I only had 18 rounds left. Groups 2 & 3 were about like group 1, I really blew 1 round I took my heavy barrel .308 as a control to see how well I was shooting. It is a gun usually shoot well. Varget and a 168 Nosler CC was the load. Photo 3 .308 5 rounds group 1 Photo 4 .308 5 rounds group 4 Groups 2 & 3 Each shrunk a little. I was not expecting to see something like photo 4 so soon after being away so long. I am a good enough shooter to get my share of groups like this but not good enough to expect them constantly. It made my day. I think I was the biggest accuracy problem for the 7mm-08 AI. Firing such a light gun accurately can be tricky. It is easier for slight motions to knock it off target. I will probably try adjusting the trigger down a little more. I expect the .308 had an advantage being second.
  19. I had a unit 1 archery tag about 12 years ago. I got skunked but still had a great time. Lots of action. The weather up there in early September is also much nicer than something like 21. I have had NM tags and got assigned to a public land ranch that was 10 x 10 to 12 x 12 miles square. If you are limited to 100 to 150 square miles there is not much need to scout like you would if you had a whole unit available to you. Has anyone taken the screen name "point collector"?

    rear rifle support question

I carry a small bean bag that I put in the top half of my fist. I put the hand under the stock and slide it back and forth under the taper on the stock to rough adjust the sight picture. Fine tuning is achieved by squeezing or releasing your grip on the bag. It is cheap and light but obviously only works prone, not sitting.

    Looking to team up

Chris and I only have a couple points each and chose all good bull hunts, we will probably get skunked on the draw. If you pull a tag let us know we could probably help you out on your hunt.

    LMAO

In addition to the back injury I believe she also suffered a head injury, while diving in the shallow end of the gene pool.
  23. The rifle was built in 2012 but never got it's own scope till recently so I never felt it was complete. The sunshade for the scope finally arrived Tuesday. I just worked with scopes borrowed from other guns. Of the powders I tried H4895 is my favorite. Between being blown out to Ackley and the COAL being extended by 0.130 I gain 6% internal capacity over a standard 7mm-08. With H4895 the maximum 7mm-08 charge + 10% produces 2950 FPS from a 20" barrel with a 140 gr bullet. The Hodgon manual used a 24" test barrel and achived 2769 FPS. The manual shows Varget achieving higher a higher velocity in 7mm-08. This does not hold true in my gun. The gun has produced plenty of sub MOA groups but with its light weight is more susceptible to flyers produced by minor shooter technique errors. Three years ago Iused it in a sitting position, without a bi-pod, to take a deer at 330 yards. Two years ago during deer season the weather was terible, gusting 30 MPH winds. Late in the afternoon a friend who was with me spotted a steel plate across the canyon. We ranged it at around 550 yards, milled it and concluded it was 12" square. With no deer to be found it seemed like an excellent opportunity to experiment. I fired up the kestrel and applied ballistics, attached a bi-pod and dialed in the scope. I allowed myself 3 rounds, 2 hit 1 plowed into the dirt 3.5 feet to the left. On the miss the 30 MPH crosswind dropped right as I fired. The windage correction for the shot was 5 feet. A miss is still a miss but it was neither the fault of the rifle or ballistic data. The experiment proved my ballistic data was good and the little rifle could reach out a bit even in foul weather. I will be out at the range with the new scope. If I get a target that is not too embarrassing I will put it up here. I am fortunate, my father and I have a mill and a lathe. If I decide to chamber a round I buy the reamer and headspace gauges, if needed. I am pleased with the stock and would buy another. It is probably the biggest weight reduction on the gun. I chose to purchase one in raw form just out of the mold. I had to do the final fit and finish work to get the action to set in properly, the barrel to center in the channel, the bolt handle to clear when cycling, cut it to length and fit a recoil pad. I probably worked pretty cheap versus buying a finished one but I wanted to do everything possible on this gun by myself and I had plenty of time to waste.
  24. There are many grades of aluminum, from recycled beer can to stuff that is used on military aircraft. Aluminum is not always soft. I used to do side jobs fabricating prototypes for military R&D contracts and have seen aluminum used as ballistic armor. As far as expansion / contraction with different metals the parts have been mixed on rifles for years with good results. You are not experiencing huge temperature variations like you would in something like a turbine engine. Regardless of what attaches them you are still mounting an aluminum scope to a steel receiver. Ounces add up fast. 4 oz is 1/4 lb.

    The perfect urn

I work for a freight company and see things every day that are not properly packaged or labled. You appear to have packaged uncle bob very well. It sounds like he would definitely approve of the packaging job. Sorry for your loss.
