My hunting partners son carries a Remington Model 7 Compact. When he outgrows the youth stock it will be swapped out for a normal stock and the gun will still be a nice light rifle for him as an adult.

A range in a trench??? That has to be a real treat after a heavy rain. -

You mentioned after the rifle was re barreled it was returned with a test target. Is the load used noted on the target? If not would it be worth contacting Christensen to see what the test load was? It might be interesting to try the same load they used. Just a thought. -
22000 HP, is that 4 to 5 locomotives? My Peterbilts 450 HP sounds weak in comparison. No, I'm not experiencing HP envy but I must admit I am a little jealous you get your own personal "road" to drive on and I don't. Weak was a poor choice of words on my part. It would be a different composition of the compound that lacked the qualities that would get it regulated as HAZ MAT. The important detail is that it remains stable as a liquid at around 800 to 900 deg F. and doesn't do anything to chemically alter the brass. I just ran 100 cases through the torch and socket routine this morning. I never feel that I get them all done evenly that way. The salt bath idea seems like it would be easier to produce a consistent outcome.

I got to waste the beautiful morning doing yard work. So, how did the rifle do? -
No HAZ MAT fee? That is good if you need to have it shipped. The stuff must be a weaker version of the same chemical that is below the concentration where DOT declares it to be HAZ MAT. $15.60 to ship $12.00 of product? As a freight guy I always get a laugh out of those. They really get some people all bent out of shape.

There is no reason for the hole to be blind unless it comes out over a locking lug for the bolt. If you can get access to a mill or at least decent drill press you could do it, If you really want to. Find a drill bit that fits snugly in the hole on the base. Mount the base on the action with the other 3 screws and clamp the action to the table level. Place the snug fitting drill bit in the chuck upside down (flat end down). Use the bit as an alignment gauge to center the hole under the chuck. Tighten everything and recheck the alignment. Spot drill to start the whole then drill up to the correct size drill for the tap. Use the chuck of the drill press to support and align the tap & tap handle. Tap slow, back out frequently and clean and lube. The Action is going to be hard and it is very easy to break off the tap. This is a problem that requires special drill bits to resolve. The reality is that unless you already have the tooling it is probably cheaper and much less hassle to have a machinist do it.

Non-surgical sounds good. Getting reassembled like a set of tinker toys with pins, screws and plates sucks.

I placed a number of orders with them around 6 years ago. At that time the provided excellent customer service. One time I called in need of a pair of headspace gauges, they were out of stock. A technician overheard my conversation with the salesperson and said there was a batch in line waiting for a QC check. He volunteered to grab a pair and QC them. Half an hour later the salesperson called me back to tell me my gauges were packed and ready to ship. I can't say what current customer service is like. I am very happy with all of the tools I got from them. Midway USA is also a stocking dealer for some of their products

Talk about diving right in. I expect you got nailed for a HAZ MAT shipping charge on the salts. Potassium Nitrate and Sodium Nitrite are both regulated for transportation by DOT as oxidizers. The way around that is to find a local source. When your shipment arrives could you check if there is a mixture % for the two ingredients? It may be easier to obtain them separately and mix them. The potassium nitrate seems to be common, I transport lots of it. One of its uses is to mix it with other chemicals to make an explosive used in open pit mines.

Just wandered back through here. Sorry to here about your injury. A good surgeon is just the first part. Make sure you get a good therapist to help you recover. I blew up an ankle real bad. An excellent surgeon put it back together, an excellent therapist got it working again.

That is a neat little set-up. I have seen this done on an industrial scale where they use gantry cranes to lower parts into a huge tank. It never would have occurred to me to adapt the process into an at home annealing setup. If you read the explanation from the guy doing it pay attention to the fact that he is referencing temperature in celsius, not fahrenheit, If you want try this yourself.

.300WM Christensen Arms Load Development
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Factory ammo and brass does have to be undersized to fit in a minimum chamber. Say the go gauge, used to measure the minimum chamber, is zero. The brass goes in 0.010 short. When it is fired it comes out 0.010 long. The no go gauge is typically 0.004 longer than the go gauge. A field gauge is typically 0.010 longer than the go gauge. Say the brass that Kingzero mentioned above that grew 0.012 when fired started out 0.010 short. It would be 0.002 long, right between a go and no go gauge. Unless the brass Lance is working with, that grew 0.020, started out over 0.016 short it seems the chamber may over the no go gauge and possibly close to the field gauge range. As a disclaimer I have never chambered a barrel for a belted cartridge but I expect the tolerances for headspace would be similar to the non-belted cartridges I have worked with. -

That would make me want to put headspace gauges in the chamber to see if it was a little long. -
The Dinky Deer Thread - Let's see the SMALLEST one you've got???
300RUM replied to mattys281's topic in The Campfire
It may mot be a deer but I got an elk I will never forget. I had a cow tag and put an arrow through one. As I was walking up behind the dead elk I saw balls between the back legs. Talk about a "maalox moment". I ran around to the front and there were no antlers. As my tag actually said antlerless I was good to go. He was a tasty little guy. -
Something with such an unusual shape might work out well suspended from the ceiling. Let the skulls hang in mid-air in the position they were in when they got locked together. Might be fun trying to find a balance point.

ISO Hornady 10th edition reloading manual
300RUM replied to HuntHarder's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Hornady still likes to sell the loading data. You don't need data specific to a certain bullet, the weight is the major issue. Most powder manufactures have load data for free on their website. Check the website for the powder you want to use. If they do not list a 145 gr bullet use the start charge for the 150 gr bullet and carefully work up. -
Accuracy Intl. fluted barrel test
300RUM replied to 300RUM's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I had looked on their website and did not find a reference to the test. I expect it was strictly an R & D test and not intended to be promotional. It may be worth contacting them to see if they would share the test results. In the IA test the fluted barrels shifted impact when the non-fluted barrels didn’t. At some point, with more heat buildup, the un-fluted barrels would shift also. Due to the reduced mass I would expect the fluted barrel to shift first. AI markets their guns for combat duty so I expect the rate of fire in their test was fairly aggressive, in excess of what a hunter or sensible recreational shooter would be likely to do. Thanks for the link. It is one of the places I had found the test being referenced. I see the test being cited by opponents of barrel fluting to support their opinion but I have never seen the complete, unbiased data from the test. How hot they got the barrel to cause the shift is a very important detail I never see mentioned. -
Accuracy International did a test comparing the accuracy of fluted barrels to non-fluted barrels. It probably occurred around 2012. Does anyone know where the complete test data might be available. I can find sections of the test being referenced in other articles but items like rate of fire and barrel temperature are never mentioned. I expect AI would have kept records of those items.

Just ordered myself a new rifle
300RUM replied to kazpilot25's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
That is like saying "You have a rifle, why do you need another one?". Pure blasphemy. I have a .260 Remington and a 6.5 SLR, and planning my third 6.5 rifle now. It can make perfect sense to have several rifles in the same or very similar chamberings. They may serve entirely different purposes. One may be a heavy target rifle and another a lightweight hunting rig. At one time I owned two .308 rifles One was a heavy barreled 700 the other was a L1-A1 , an inch pattern FN-FAL. They were both .308 but were definitely not interchangeable. -
For me it would be an instinctive call based on seeing the two deer in question, it could go either way.

I hate trimming brass but I love this tool. They call it “The World’s Finest Trimmer”. I’m inclined to agree. I have a motorized trimmer for a Dillon RL-550 and I prefer this tool. It is a quality built “made in USA” item. The cutter in an industrial end mill. It is inserted into an aluminum housing that has a case pilot running in a sealed bearing. It is powered by a cordless drill. The original style is $69 and does a family of cases. Example .308, 7mm-08, .260, .243. They just custom built a 7mm-08 Ackley trimmer for me at no extra charge. A WFT2 that has interchangeable pilots is also available. Little Crow Gunworks www.littlecrowgunworks.com 320-796-0530 Midway also carries some of the common models.

Just curious, how much time did you spend cleaning up pine needles? Maybe you should just save the tree and use it again next year now that it is mess proof.

Last I knew AZGFD did not regulate hunting them because they were feral domestic animals. If the land management agency or property owner gave you the OK you could hunt them, no tag needed. This was at least 6 years ago so things may have changed. My partner and I grabbed leftover turkey tags in 13B, got our birds, then went looking for some of these pigs that are up there. We didn't find them but you could sure tell where they had been.
-
That is it. I have had hunts were we worked just north of 260 trying to catch them before they crossed.
