Looking for a good gunsmith!!!! For my 300 win mag
300RUM replied to Rock30golf's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Your problem falls into 1 of 3 basic categories. Shooter, Ammunition, Rifle. Eliminate 2 and work on the 3rd. Fire a completely different load. A bullet from a different manufacture and of a different weight. If you are shooting heavy bullets go lighter, if you are shooting light bullets go heavier. If this load is consistent as range increases the first load was probably the problem. If the new load has the same problem have another known accurate shooter fire your rifle. If they get the same results as you the problem is in the rifle. If the rifle shoots well for them there is a problem with the shooter. That last one is always hard to admit, I know from experience. -
I expect they keep equation for that ratio real simple. Number of animals harvested divided by number of tags issued. Example 20 animals harvested divided by 50 tags issued equals 40% hunt success. The biggest variable in the accuracy is probably what % of hunters for each hunt complete their surveys. If you start taking other variables into account the equation would get real complicated real fast. How many hunters did not hunt at all? How many days did each hunter hunt? Did some hunters use archery or muzzle loaders in a general season? How experienced was each hunter? What was the weather like?

Since it is an auto-loader it is harder on the extractor than a bolt gun. When you break the extractor on a 7400 you get to remove the barrel so you can remove the bolt through the front of the action to replace the extractor. I had one in .270 years back and a friend had one in 30-06. I do not feel either one would have made a solid 500 yard rifle.

I like to pack light and be very mobile while still having everything I need to stay out all day if necessary. Even if the herd is traveling at a casual pace it can cover lots of ground. They can take you for quite a walk. It is a major adrenaline rush to head out in the dark while they are bugling like crazy and get yourself close so you can begin to stalk at first light. The last bull I got took me 10 days of hard hunting 5 months after recovering from a badly broken ankle. I picked some gentler terrain than I usually hunted and was glad I did. If you intend to chase bugles pick terrain you can move across day after day without beating yourself up to bad.

I have taken 2 bulls and a few cows in the unit, all archery. I don't hunt around Hutch Mountain. Take a look at the NW corner of the unit. You say you are familiar with 6A so you have probably seen huge groups of elk in Mormon Lake. If the group is at the SE end of the lake it will cross Lake Mary road into the NW corner of 5B S when it is done feeding. I have also hunted down in the south end of the unit and found good spots. I know some people who come in off the 87 side and do well over there.

Apparently getting your fix after 17 plus years of withdrawal can make you cross dress an anrelope.

And I get to go duck hunting. Maybe NM will come through.

Congratulations. I had that tag about 10 years ago. I hunted in the higher elevations south of Springerville. There were some nice meadows along 285 (Water Canyon road) and 88 that had good herds. I only met 2 other hunters the whole time I was there. I used to spend a week for archery deer & turkey up there every year before the fire. Access issues were never a problem.

I am just guessing here. They may make them available to organizations like Hunts For Heroes. If an outfit like that does not have a taker they probably destroy the tag. I do not expect they have a process to re-issue them to the general public. If they issue a set number of tags based on how many animals they want harvested how does it make any sense that they would just destroy the tags? If the hunter had the tag and did not hunt or the hunter turned through point guard and the tag was not re-issued the end result is the same, no hunter in the field. Tags being drawn and not used is something that has always happened before point guard. They issue a given number of tags, they estimate a % will be filled. They do not expect every tag issued will always be taken into the field by the hunter.Surely they realize that now there are gonna be a larger percentage of unused tags thanks to the new tag drawing strategies. The tags in the archery unit I applied for first choice didn't change to account for it. I expect they will just adjust the number of issued tags, based on the average number returned, to achieve their harvest objective. They sold the tag, they sold point guard, they take the tag back without refunding for either. They sell more tags without putting more hunters in the field. It does not look like a loosing situation for G&F.

A while back my parents neighbor asked me to come look at an old rifle he had. He wanted to know what it was. It turned out to be an old Enfield in .30-06. It was not re-barreled. The barrel had military ordnance marks, U.S. markings. With little research I concluded it was built in the U.S. under contract during WW I. Cool piece of history.

If that is "a few" I believe "lots of" would require a dump truck. I wish I still had that much energy.

If a 30% rejection rate is true the problem is probably the AZGFD system. We need to send a few people from AZGFD next door to New Mexico to take lessons. They do not have that problem over there. They can run the entire fall draw for all species at once and get it done in 1 month.

have a barrel threaded for supressor?
300RUM replied to Tac's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I think hes got a 16m x 1.0 metric thread which cannot be turned down, its almost the same size (.629"). The thread would have to be cut off rethreaded and recrowned if its a 16m. I think you are right, there are a number of European manufactured .338 Lapuas. He had it in the right sequence of 16-1, which I thought was an inverted 1-16 instead of 16 x 1.00. I have never had many guns with metric threads so I was biased to SAE. Even when I shot a FN-FAL mine was actually an L1-A1 (inch pattern). Thanks for straightening me out on that one. -

1-16 is a common breech end thread on a barrel. Are you saying you have 1-16 on the muzzle end? To go from a 1" thread to a 5/8 thread they should be able to just turn down the area where the 1 " thread and re cut a 5/8" thread in the same place without cutting the barrel shorter. -
Some color? Not one to exaggerate are you? The pattern Looks very intricate how long did that take? I have been considering trying to paint a cammo pattern on one of my rifle stocks this spring, never done it before. I think I would definitely start out with something much simpler than that.

April 26 to be exact. ☺And they will send you an email! Not days later either, first thing! So wished Arizona would modernize our draw system! The NM system is much simpler than the AZ system. Remember the K.I.S.S. principal? Keep It Simple Stupid. With the exception of % quotas for resident, guided non resident & non resident it is a straight 1 pass lottery. The tags are already paid for before they are drawn. It is a simple "old school" system and they can get it done quick and easy. The AZ system with bonus points and a 3 pass system is complicated. Not charging for the tags up front only adds complications and delays. Arguably AZ needs to simplify it as much as they need to modernize it. Today I just had a last minuet date conflict with my NM elk app. I deleted it, surrendered the app fee ($13 ?) and entered a new app with different dates before the deadline. Now that is modern. Yes, the email from NM is sure nice. You don't even need to be bothered to sign into your account to check. I have 2 words for that "customer service".

That was a good video. I can't recall, did it cover the variable of number of applicants on an application? You can have 1 tag left for a hunt, application after application with 2, 3 or 4 applicants can be pulled up and rejected because there are not enough tags. It will take an application with 1 applicant to get the tag. The same math works for 2 tags left or 3 tags left. If there are tags left, but the number of applicants on the application exceeds the number of tags available the application is rejected and the next one pulled up.

My partner and I once received bull tags on an application where we only applied for easy draw cow tags. We chose not to go down to GFD and complain about that "problem". The hunt was one of the late November archery hunts and it sucked. After the hunt we both agreed we should have taken our receipt and gone down and complained. "No, we don't want these bull tags, please give us the cow tags we applied for". That probably would have been a great "candid camera" moment.

Thanks for the information. I have been meaning to check on that for years. I always forget. Looking for hunts to apply for or reviewing the regulations to keep myself legal if I am lucky enough to get a tag seem to distract me. It is interesting that the nonresident application % is the basis for HD. Not what I would have expected.

I was at the range this morning and saw a shirt I liked. It said "You can't buy happiness but you can buy guns.... kinda the same thing ain't it". So why am I complaining about having to go clean guns now?

.308 Secret Sauce??? (Loading Question)
300RUM replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have the same barrel length and twist as you. A few weeks ago I fired 180 NBT's with Varget and the load was over 1 inch. Velocity was 2550 fps. It was the first time I loaded with the heavier bullet so it could still be something a seating depth adjustment could fix. I usually fire 168 SMK with Varget or H4895 and get 0.5 MOA. When I first worked up the 168 loads I did try a powder that the gun did not like and would not group with. You might get a pound of a different powder and see if that makes a difference. When you look at the load data for different powders keep in mind they probably used a 26 or 24 inch barrel.
