6.5-06 AI or .280 AI? What would YOU build?
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Which version of the Wyatt's extended mag are you planning to use? When I built my lightweight 7mm-08 AI I initially tried the center feed. I have never had so many feeding failures. No mater how I adjusted it I still had problems. Sent it back to Midway and got it replaced with the standard staggered feed version. With a little adjustment to accommodate the Ackley round it was very reliable. I have since installed them in my .300 RUM and .308 as well. The poll results are interesting, I expected it would be closer than that. -
A reporter would take personal risk to be at the actual site. A commentator sits in it comfortable office talking about something they know nothing about in person. She is no reporter.

Has anyone tried loading 130 to 140 gr bullets in the 6.8 SPC ?
300RUM replied to 300RUM's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
It is a carbine I built off a bushmaster lower when the 6.8 first came out. I wanted a quality stainless barrel, something not readily available at the time, so I bought a 1" Douglas blank and turned my own barrel. Unfortunately mid- length gas systems were not real common and I used the carbine length. At first I had a short extractor life span with hotter loads but switching to an H3 buffer and building a restrictor for the gas system solved the problem. The next barrel will be mid-length. I use the rifle to hunt so additional energy is desirable. I felt the cartridge was capable of more than the loads in the manual were producing. The 130 gr load I worked up produces 15% more energy at 200 yards than the 110 gr load from the book. That is a healthy increase. It will be interesting to see if a 140 gr load can top that. -

Last year I started working with magazine length heavy bullet loads in a 6.8 SPC AR carbine with the goal of obtaining more energy. There is generally no load data for bullets over 115 gr. A 110 gr bullet at 2525 fps with 1034 ft/lbs at 200 yd was my best by the book load. I have been able to load a 130 gr bullet to 2400 fps for 1189 ft/lbs at 200 yd. a nice improvement in energy. Today I made my first attempt with 140 gr bullets and got 2360 fps for 1133 ft/lbs at 200 yd. I still have a few more powders to try with the 140 gr. It would not take much more velocity for the 140 gr to exceed the 130 gr load in energy. Has anybody else experimented with heavy bullets in this round? -
At times you can ask yourself if it is the job of America to police the world. In situations like this you should consider the following quote from Edmond Burke, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing".

CWT group effort Wildcat Rifle build

Have you tried H1000 yet? I worked up the load for my friends .270 for his sheep hunt. With a 140 grain bullet H1000 beat H4831 by over 100 fps. I would think it should perform very well in your 6.5. -
Project "Long Range Loaner" Load Development
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I don't loan out my rifles either, it is not worth the risk. I don't have a loaner rifle but I do have a loaner scope. It is an old Leupold VX-3 3.5 x 10 AO that I bought almost 30 years ago, the first decent scope I ever bought. Apparently I have quite a ways to go to work myself up to deplorable status. It is not a scope I am likely to use myself for a variety of reasons, one being it is heaver than my 56mm objective NSX. I would not get much if I sold it. I would not get upset if I watched it bounce down a mountain. It still has decent glass and sound tracking. I keep it around and loan it out to friends who have bought a rifle and can't afford a good scope yet or have had a cheap scope fail. It is currently on a friends son's youth model 7 .243. He got his first pig with it this year. It was kind of cool to be along and see my old scope still bagging some game. -
Another option, I am at Rural and Chandler and have them

Project "Long Range Loaner" Load Development
300RUM replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
What is "inexpensive" to Lance?? We all know you are a top tier guy 2500-4000 dollar scope range, inexpensive scope to me is a 150 dollar to 400 scope does that sound right? Or is that a 700-1000 dollar range? Maybe look into the Athlon ARES BTR 4.5-27x50 FFP 600 dollars or the 400 dollars Midas 4.5-27x50 SFP I was guessing "inexpensive" would be about $1000. Note that the word inexpensive has quotation marks around it when he uses it. Putting in the time, effort and money into a loaner rifle is a really cool thing to do. Are you trying to get people involved in long range shooting, hunting or both? -
I run Garmin gps 20's with OnXmaps software on them. The OnXmaps, formerly Hunting GPSmaps, was recommended to me years ago by an NMDGF regional supervisor for an antelope hunt that had many blocks of private and Indian owned land I would not be allowed on. I ran a trial version on the hunt and have used their software for AZ and NM since then. Having your first archery bull tag is awesome. Your mind is going 100 MPH thinking of all the details of the hunt. Don't get to wrapped up in all the other details to overlook the most important one. Make sure you get out there and have a good time. The hunt should not become a chore.

I had been keeping a list for you of GPS coordinates of prefect trees to wrap a rifle around. Should I just delete it? There is a point in life where a nice lightweight rifle becomes a necessity, not just a desire. I passed that point a few years back. With an accurate load that sounds like a sweet light weight rig. -
My partner and I used to always hunt 1 & 27 for archery deer. He likes to wear running shoes. The grass up there is deep and can be very wet in the morning. He often had to switch out for waterproof boots. I always take some scent free soap, a bucket and clothes line and wash clothes in camp if needed.

Don't blame the vehicle, it could just as easily have been a jeep, dirt bike or ATV. The problem is the driver. If you have to shoot pictures of it again try to get a recognizable landmark in the background or something very unique in the forground. If the photos are ever used to back up a citation it will help make it stick.

Buck Officially Scored 200 0/8" gross 197 4/8" net
300RUM replied to bonecollector777's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I have received about 10 messages from guys claiming they were chasing it. Problem was only two people were within the right area for it to be this buck. I had stories spread from over by Clints well, all across the rim, all the way to showlow. So apparently theres 8 other 200 inch typicals out there somewhere That is beautiful deer! So, did you interrogate the other 8 guys carefully enough to be able go get yourself another one? -
There is an up side to their small size. They tend to inhabit some foul terrain and it makes packing them out easier. Evolution at it's finest.

backpacking tents.... what are you guys using?
300RUM replied to 1denogean's topic in Other Hunting Gear
When I used to do multi day wilderness pack hunts I used an Outdoor Research Bug Bivy. Basically it is a zippered enclosure just big enough to put your sleeping bag in and keep small visitors out. The top is mesh netting so it wont help if it rains. As I recall they are under 1 pound and probably in the $50 range. Got it at REI. -
And then there's grandkids.......gotta love it if you are listening to Frozen with grandkids singing in the back!!! For both of you I am thinking of a parody of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Whiskey Rock-A-Roller. The chorus could go like this. Well, I'm a Disney rock-a-roller That's what I am Children, Disney and miles of travellin' Is all I understand.

The odds of getting a chance to harvest an animal like that art probably about like winning the lottery. Congratulations to your daughter.

Wasn't the 6mm originally released with an inch designation of .244 and renamed to 6mm when the rifle was re-released with the faster twist barrel?
-
Agreed!!! I think it's great though. More choices, more rifles, more shooting, more fun. I remember when the creedmoor came out. For the first 3 years I wanted one bad. Everyone on shooting forums was saying it will disappear it's only a fab. Hornady did a great job in promoting it. I think they are in the belief it can happen again. It's funny the 6 mm Remington and Win 243 came out he same time or close to it. The Remington will beat it with velocity by 150-200 fps. But Winchester did a better job promoting it and Remington stop making it because of lack of sales. This will be fun to see happen if someone can get their hands on it Remington used a twist rate for 6mm rifles that was only suited for lighter varmint bullets. They did not envision it being used with heavier bullets as a deer & antelope rifle. That led to a lack of sales. The .243 rifles were released with a twist rate that made it a good dual purpose varmint & large game rifle. That is why they substantially outsold the more powerful 6mm.

I drive for a living and spend time in areas where XM does not work well. I have over 500 CD's scanned into my computer so I just hook up my phone and load music to it then plug it into the stereo in the tractor. Some of what is currently on my phone includes... Fleetwood Mac, old Peter Green era stuff like Green Manalishi and Black Magic Woman Priest and Santana made them popular but Mac is the original Stevie Ray Vaughan A favorite of mine for many years Michael Schenker Love his acoustic guitar work. Dire Straits Can't stand many of their popular songs but alot of the ones that were not very popular have a interesting blues influence to them Johnny Lang Dio Clint Black Molly hatchet

Wheat? Rye? Sourdough? -
Awesome! I had front row seats to something like that once. I sat 50 yards away, in the middle of the meadow, with my bow and cow tag. No way would I trade that experience for a easy shot at a cow.

I have had to fill one out, pretty quick and easy. I would recommend printing a copy and holding onto it just in case there is an issue the next year.

When I want a blind somewhere I tend to build one with supplies that are already there. It usually doesn't take to long. It looks very natural. You don't have to pack it in and out. I have never had a bear molest one. I have never had one stolen.
