    Tikka 6.5X55

I have seen guys trying wet towels and other methods. My concern with attempts to artificially cool the barrel is that they may not cool the barrel evenly. This could lead to a temporary bending of the barrel and a POI shift. Just my opinion

    Long Range Hunting

I hunt both archery and long range rifle and enjoy both. As an archery hunter I really enjoy the challenge of stalking within 50 yards, or less, to make my shot. I like to stay pretty mobile. I do not use tree stands but will occasionally build a blind from materials on hand. As a long range rifle hunter I tend to climb to a very good vantage point then sit and watch. Kind of like being in a tree stand with an excellent view for 1/2 mile. It takes lots of preparation and practice to be able to make long shots. It is very satisfying when I make the shot and harvest my animal. However, for me, this does not have the same thrill that a successful archery stalk does. I think for me the most excitement comes from the incredible challenge of closing in on the animal, at close range, to make the shot.

If the gun is not a "double barrel" I would expect it would have to be double size.

    Proposed-Hunt-Guidelines-for-2018-2023

NM has been doing it for a while. If you have a tag you have to submit a harvest report. Unless a number of people falsify reports for some reason NM has a very accurate reporting of the number of animals harvested on each hunt. Either way, they have to have more accurate data than AZ.

    Rio Grande Finished

Congratulations. My hunting partner would be jealous, he has the turkey bug real bad. We put in for spring turkey separate now so he has a better shot at a Rio or Goulds tag. Were you up in 13 or out of state?
  7. Congratulations and welcome to the shish kabobed bear club. I got mine about 15 years ago still hunting a ridge in unit 27. Before you let that arrow fly did you consider for just a second what could happen if shot didn't go well and the bear was pissed and pinpointed you as the source of the problem?
  8. I'll second the cold bore zero. The cold bore shot being off from the group is fairly common. Military and L/E snipers are well aware of it and in most cases favor a cold bore zero. Their mentality is that the first shot counts, not if I miss I will just shoot again.

Just got back from dropping off a bolt, your rifle looks sharp! By the time you put optics back on it will be one heavy beast. May I suggest an accessory? A bi-pod with wheels and a hitch on the back of the rifle you could attach to your belt and tow it like the military tows 155 mm howitzers.
  10. When I noticed the "weight sorted" claim on a Nosler box I decided to compare them to 25 brand new Remington cases. It was .300 RUM brass. Remington 273.08 to 277.54 for a 4.46 variance. Nosler 289.78 to 290.74 for a 0.96 variance.
  11. I seem to recall hearing somewhere that Sig hired several former Leopold engineers to do design work. I don't expect that Sig is doing the manufacturing themselves so who's building it?

    Paralysis of Analysis

To make fun of me my wife does a parody of the Batman theme song as Map Man. I think it's a condition that has no cure. The bright side is once you have boots on the ground you have a real good idea of how the terrain is contoured.

    Barometric Pressure on Shooter App

These days I have Applied Ballistics on my phone. It can use the phone to measure angle to target. A kestrel feeds environmental data by bluetooth and I have a laser range finder. It is all very handy and if all the data is entered correctly, very accurate. I still print a trajectory card for every hunt. Technology is great but if you depend on it something as simple as a dead battery will ruin your day. My scopes have MIL calibrated reticles and the rifles have ACI's mounted on them. I carry a set of cards that give me trajectory and wind compensation, data for ranging with the MIL reticle, tips for estimating wind, etc.
  14. These would be real nice if you just wanted to test a variety of powders without having to buy a pound of each. How about a build your own 6-pack deal? DOT Approves New 1000-grain (2.3 oz.) Powder Containers The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently approved new smaller containers for shipment of smokeless powder. The new containers are designed to hold 1000 grains, exactly one-seventh of a pound. That works out to 2.29 ounces of powder — quite a bit less than you are getting currently with one-pound (16 oz.) containers.

    Ram DEF Issue's

This is not a problem that is isolated to Dodge pickup trucks. I'm a commercial driver and late last year I got a new Peterbilt 579. It has a Cummins ISX 15 with the new DEF emissions system. I have already been towed in twice this year because the computer thought it was out of DEF when the tank was 3/4 full. If the computer thinks there's something wrong with the DEF it is going to pull the plug. For those of you who like manual Transmissions you will probably get a real treat in a few years. This tractor came with a 10 speed manual that is operated by a computer. It has been a little difficult to get used to.
  16. fortunately for me the last time I went to traffic class was a long time ago. At that time the violation was not made available to the insurance companies. There's a good chance that may have changed. Seems to be a little CDL get together here I've got one also. From that standpoint I'd be inclined to keep my record clean. You never know when you might have to unexpectedly go filling out job applications.
  17. When you look at the cost of traffic school you need to compare it not only to the price of the ticket but also to the potential increase in your insurance.
  18. That has to hurt a bit knowing you paid for a bunch of machine work and the gun comes apart looking like that. In the original condition photo of the action you can also see the locking lug for the bolt looks rather rough. Does anyone know how Remington finishes the front of the actions? The marks left on them are a bit odd. They make me think the front of the action was ground.

    Barometric Pressure on Shooter App

This might help explain how barometric pressure is used and the differences in ways that barometric is measured and / or reported. It is from the directions to Applied Ballistics, another ballistics application. Atmospheric inputs have historically been the least understood and caused the most trouble for shooters running ballistics programs, in particular the pressure inputs. The following discussion elaborates on the correct way to manage these variables. Basically there are two options for describing pressure to a ballistics program; 1) Enter the barometric (aka corrected) pressure and altitude, or 2) Enter the Station pressure where you are. Some definitions are in order regarding barometric and station pressure. Barometric pressure is also known as sea level corrected pressure, and is what the weather station and airports report because it's useful for pilots and making weather assessments. Barometric pressure is not the actual air pressure where you are, rather it's a number that's corrected to sea level. In order to determine the actual air pressure where you are (which is what the ballistics program cares about), you have to account for the effects of altitude. However if you have a handheld weather meter like a Kestrel, you can measure Station Pressure directly which is the actual air pressure where you are. This is the preferred method of inputting pressure data because it's one less input and relies on only one measurement instead of two. A common error is to mistake station pressure for barometric or vice versa. The consequence of this error is that the wrong air density gets applied which degrades the accuracy of trajectory predictions. This error is increasingly more severe the higher up you are above sea level. Refer to the image on the right for proper set-up of the atmospheric pressure inputs. Note the reference altitude is set to 0 ft in the Kestrel which indicates it's displaying uncorrected station pressure, and the Pressure is Absolute box is checked in the program indicating it's using station pressure. To further clarify the output from the Kestrel, here is an excerpt from the Kestrel user's manual: "Some final notes - If you wish to know the actual or station pressure for your location (such as for engine tuning), simply set the reference altitude on the BARO screen to “0”. In this case, the Kestrel Meter will not make any adjustment and will display the measured value. (Engine tuning and ballistics software sometimes refer to atmospheric or station pressure as “absolute pressure.” These applications are concerned with the actual air density, as opposed to pressure gradients relating to weather, so barometric pressure is less useful."
  20. Except for his rear end if the wife finds out he used her vaccum to suck up gunpowder.
  21. Half pound of powder is around $15. The safe, clean and easy way out of this is to dump it in a pile with a small trail leading to the pile, light the end of the trail and watch it burn. A half pound is 3500 gr so the powders are mixed at about a 1 to 30 ratio. The fire forming suggestion seems reasonable. Shake the bottle thoroughly and use RL23 starting charge. I have to confess to doing the same thing once with 2 similar powders and using the mix for light plinking loads for an AR-15. I managed to do it without blowing myself up.

    Goodwin Fire

I know how you feel. My birthday is at the end of August and for many years my present to myself was a week-long archery deer and turkey hunt in 1 & 27. After the Wallow fire all my favorite spots looked like a nuclear blast zone.
