This next year I will be putting in for whitetail. I have been putting in for unit 32 mule deer. These tags are pretty high demand I guess??? I know I am getting my info right because I had an archery cow tag 2 years ago. I will look at my regs again for last year, but I think there was a high number of apps for these hunts. I know if I can get drawn for this hunt I can probably get a trophy md off of the private land I hunt on. This area has only a few coues on it and the unit gets conjested during wt hunts, that is why I havent put in for wt there yet. GMM -

Yes, I have a scope on it. It is a 2-6 power burris. I had another scope on it but it fell apart because of recoil. I had to get a higher quality scope so it wouldnt happen again. I cant wait to get drawn for something, I really want to take my pistol out for something more than coyotes. GMM -

I carry earmuffs anytime I have my pistol with me. That 454 is the loudest thing I have ever heard! I usually put them on the top of my head so it is quick to get them on. I started handgun hunting when I was 19, but have never got anything larger than a coyote, I havent been drawn for anything for a few years, so I just archery hunt. I hope I can get drawn for deer or elk this year, so I can use my pistol. GMM -
Yes it was on a small tank I know of. GMM

Coues are just now starting to lose their antlers. I blew up a photo from my trail cam, and it is a buck that has lost his antlers. I kind of thought it was because of body size and shape, now I know it is because I can see where the antlers were. GMM

Trail Cameras

Well, might have got a bobcat photo last night. I got 3 pics in one night in a wash with a lot of tracks in it. There were fresh coyote and bobcat tracks on my 4wheeler tracks from that afternoon. It was just a one night set up then went and got it this morning, and just set it in my yard, I may get some pics of the squirrel that has been digging holes. I know I will get pics of my dog. Anyways, hope my tips from earlier helps, if I remember any other tips I will post them. So far my setups have worked perfectly, only one photo without an animal in it. Good luck, and good camming GMM -
Trail Cameras
galiuro mountain man replied to TAM's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Tips for mounting trail cameras: On a trail- I like to point the camera either up or down the trail so I get pics of them comming or going, and it also gives a little time for the camera to actually catch the animal. Also set it about 15' from a trail, the area the sensor views is cone shaped, and will be very narrow at the camera, something can get through the cameras range quickly up close. At water or feed- choose a point where you feel you will get the best pictures, and center that area in what the picture will be, the camera has a pretty wide view, so you want to find a center point. On these type of setups I set the camera 8' to 15' from what I want a fhoto of. Basic settings- I like to set mine North if I can, they seem to have less problems with the sun setting them off. Try to keep it facing N,NE, or NW. I usually set them between 2' and 4' high, perfect hight for most animals, and it is harder to find. People are generally looking at the ground, or at their eye level, so they may miss it at 2' high. I try to keep them from 8' to 15' away from where I think the animal will be, the beam from the motion sensor will be wider there and the cam will have time to take the picture. I try to limit distance to 15' because of night pictures, most flashes only reach to about 20' so the max distance is 25' that the flash will work somewhat effectively. Birds will set them off too, when they fly through the beam, the camera will take a picture, but the bird is too fast. Hope this helps GMM -
Lion Experiences
galiuro mountain man replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
vml, Use calls, or a lot of glassing. When calling take someone with you to help you look for them, they are tough animals to spot. The only other way to do it is to get lucky or use dogs. azguide, Iknow what you meen about unit 32, I have hunted the same area for going on 8 years now, and I can see the damage lions have done there. There were 2 lions taken from the area this past winter, but I believe there are 2 more in this one set of canyons, 1 big male and 1 small female. Lion experiences, where to start, Ive been stalked twice, once in unit 32 by a single cat, and once in 31 by a pair, I think it was a mother and about a 6 month old cub. I saw the lions both times. The pair only got 60-70 yards from me. The single cat was about 20 yards behind me when I heard it, then saw it right behind me in some brush right off the trail I was on, so I pulled back my bow and tried to get around the brush to get a shot but it ran off. Other than that, I have glassed 2 and seen one between safford and globe on the highway. I just started hunting them this year, but all the times I went out the weather was bad and made it hard to call them in. GMM -

Here are the links Jesses hags Oh I picked up my camera yesterday, I had a whole roll of film gone. 16 coues photos, 6 of cattle, and 2 of me. It worked great, but it almost drowned. I set it a couple of weeks ago on the edge of a pond about 4 feet high, right above the water line. When I got to it yesterday it was only about 10 inches from the water!! That rain filled all of the ponds where I hunt, I just hope that this weekend wasnt the end of the rain. GMM -

TAM, There is always someone selling them also on these sites, I saw a few digitals that someone was selling for $250. The quality of these cams is awsome, and you cant find any decent commercials at this price. You might be able to find one there to buy, or have someone build for you, a lot of the guys on there will put them together if you supply them the parts. GMM -
Trail Cameras
galiuro mountain man replied to TAM's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Why dont you build them. I am building 2 digital cams with olympus cameras and when it is all done I will have about $150 into each of them(including price of camera), and they work better than commercially made cameras. You can put any options you want into them, night pics only, day only, delays, slave flashes for long night shots, and even digital video cameras. I have one out right now in the field for testing, of course, two days after I put it up it rains (sure hope I sealed it off good) This camera is a 35mm and it only cost me $69 to build. I am going to get it this weekend and put it in a different box (smaller and lighter one). It worked great in my back yard, so I should get some great photos from it. Oh, about the cams I am building now, I can get about 300 photos on 1 memory card! They also have a time and date on every photo if I want, all I do is set up my camera for it. The whole unit is about 9" x 5". My next ones will only be 4.5" x 3" with a 3mp digital camera! Any one can build these, they are not hard, The more you do, the better you get. They do take a little time, but when you see the quality of photos you get you wont evr buy a trail cam again! WARNING! Building trail cameras is addicting, trust me, I have only been doing it for a month or so, and I have 1 out, 2 on the way, and plans for about 50 more. Good luck GMM I can post links to the sites, if it is ok with Amanda. -

Anybody bowhunt scrapes?
galiuro mountain man replied to Rembrant's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I would like to see them too. gixxer5@cox.net Thank you -
That is awsome that you got your wife a bow. My wife already shot a bow when I met her, now she is shooting my moms. I think after I get her a car, I will get her a brand new bow so she can use it in Aug. I also got my moms rifle for her, and she is going to be lion hunting with me soon. It is awsome to hunt with your wife, we had a blast in dec. even though we froze. Good luck GMM

I was just wondering if anyone hunts coues here. I am looking for info on area! Ive hunted all the mountains north of it, on the lazy B ranch, but never went to the wilderness. I am looking for easiest routes to the wilderness boundaries. Where there is water. Where the bighorns and deer are. The reason is lion hunting. I will be in this area looking for lions. Any info is apreciated. If anyone has seen lion sign, tracks, scrapes, kills, or scat, there in the last month or so, you could let me know. If I get into lions, it will be good for the hunters, and ranchers. I will be chasing lions till the middle of march, and next month I will hit the Galiuros. (I know this area well, I could trade info) Oh, I did find a very fresh lion kill yesterday just north of the wilderness there. It was a calf that the coyotes had chased the lion off of, when we chased the coyotes off, it wasnt stiff yet and had barely been eaten on, and wasnt all the way cold yet. I know it was a lion, typical lion kill, broken neck, no lascerations on legs (coyotes attack legs),and fur was plucked from belly area, also typical of lions. I also know it was a young lion, I saw its tracks. Good luck everyone GMM

galiuro mountain man replied to Pigman's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I have found grapes from 3500 to about 7000 feet, but mostly from 4000 to 5500 feet. I usually find them in the canyons on the north sides of mountains. If you know where there are oaks in the bottoms of canyons, chances are there will be grapes. Where are you going to hunt? good luck GMM -
I have hunted water in dec and jan, it works if there isnt much hunting pressure around. Deer will use the same water holes day in and day out if they are not under pressure. Good Luck GMM

ARIZONA GUIDE, Can you email me a photo? I would like to see it. I am using an electronic caller and decoy. So far it has worked really well on yotes, called 1 in a couple of minutes, I just let it go. I was focusing on cats. I almost shot it when I thought it was going to take off with my decoy, but he smelt me and my partner when he was a few feet from the decoy. Then we called over the kill and 2 other yotes came out of the trees right above it and were very confused by it. They thought the calf had come back to life! Then we got them, we had already decided to go around to the other side of the mountain. Then the wind picked up and blew so hard that sometimes we couldnt even hear the caller, and we were 50 yards from it. We decided then to call it a day. All the predators are getting bad. I have seen more yotes than ever before and the ranchers are having a tough time with it. Some even have a bounty for them. Anyways, thanks for responding, I just hope to get some info soon. Good luck everyone GMM
