Game cam misfiring
galiuro mountain man replied to Destroyer's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I need to know what you are setting it on, is it a trail, a tank, a lick? I set up 3 cams over 4th of July weekend and got close to 200 photos all together, and only erased seven, five of those seven were at night and out of range for my flash, one was a squirrel, and only one was a false, may have been a bird. GMM -
well, set up ome cams. I hope to hget some good pics. I saw 18 deer 11 were bucks, 8 were wt. I saw 3 that were big, and one monster that was over 100 easy already. I am excited about archery season, I have a good feeling about it. GMM

What to do
galiuro mountain man replied to KGAINES's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
The biggest thing that happens to trail cams is they get shot, or the camera removed from them. Most of them get destroyed where they hang. People sometimes just cant leave stuff alone. I have had my picture taken a couple of times. I dont mess with others cameras, I know what an investment it is. GMM -
Need advice on handguns
galiuro mountain man replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Handgun Hunting for Coues Deer
If you are looking for a revolver to carry as a sidearm, .357 mag is perfect. Like everyone said, it has the most bang for your buck. I shot a .357 mag for a while, it is the most versitle gun out there. I have a ruger blackhawk convertable that I can shoot 9mm through it too. If you are looking for a new handgun, I recommend spending the extra money and buy one you feel comfortable with. Also look at warranties from different manufacturers, I know the big names have a lifetime warranty (ruger, s&w, taurus, colt) This is very important, especially if you shoot a lot. I have a friend that shoots a ruger blakhawk 44 mag. He burned out the barrel in it (he shoots a lot) so he sent it in. Two weeks later, it came back, brand new barrel on it, and cleaned and serviced. All it cost him was shipping. Remember, buying a gun is an investment, and you need to look at what is best suited for you and your uses for it. For a backup, or something to carry for protection, a .357 is perfect. It isnt very heavy, and ammo doesnt cost much, compaired to other hand cannons out there. (I know from experience) It also has pretty good range and knockdown power. Hope this helps GMM -
I finished my best cam yet this weekend. I used a p32 cam, and put a slave flash with it. The flash works to about 75 to 80 feet. It is my dads cam, and I dont have photos yet, but I will try to get some posted. He will be setting it up soon. GMM

You need to get a box, motion sensor, glass, glue, and batteries. You will need to take the p32 apart and solder some wires to it(3 of them, a refresh, a shudder and a ground) to make it work. Then you need to put it in a waterproof box, along with controller, cont batts, switches for on and off. Cut holes for pir, lens, and flash, and glue in glass. For my lense, I use UV filters, they make the pictures real nice. For my camo I use foam , like seat padding, and glue it to my box so it looks like tree bark, then I paint it like a tree. I really like the 3D affect it gives it. Storebought ones are pricy. The best one out there is the camtrakker($750 for the same camera I built, for less than half the price) Most of the other brands are cheaper, but they arent as good as the homemade ones, which actually cost less. I reccommend building them to eveyone. After the first one you are hooked, and a pro. I can build one in about 4 hours now, Including camo and test runs. Hope this helps GMM -
Aluminums or Carbons
galiuro mountain man replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Wow, what kind of bow is it? What draw wieght are you pulling? That is very fast for that wieght of arrow. GMM -
Oh yeah, Im ready to go, I love the Aug. hunt!! I shoot compounds, one Mc Pherson and one Pearson. I shoot every day, and now I am trying to decide which bow will be my primary bow, and which will be my backup. Well there are shoots almost every weekend around AZ, you just have to look at archery shops and ranges to find out when and where. The shoot in Sunrise is over the 4th of July weekend. I just entered this week, so I will be there. It is supposed to be a really good shoot, and there are lots of different things you can enter in. I just want to go and have fun. GMM

Aluminums or Carbons
galiuro mountain man replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I agree with 300 wsm. A slight helical twist could help. I just changed to a drop away rest so I can put a helical twist on my 3" fletches. They are more stable in the air, and group better than straight ones. I only lost about 4 feet per second also, now my arrows fly at 297 fps out of a 68lb bow, with 360 grain arrows. With my aluminums, I shoot around 275 fps, and they are only 10 grains heavier. I really like carbon arrows, IMO they shoot better, and last longer. GMM -
Well, I shoot all year long. I shoot at least 10 arrows per bow every day. Only break this year was in Jan. when I was triing to get a cat. I am hoping to get to some shoots this summer. I got both bows punchin tacs, and I am ready to get after these deer. Will anyone be at the Sunrise shoot? I will be there, along with my family. Anyways, just cant wait for August!! GMM

az4life, On this camera I used a sony p32, a pixcontroller board (rss), jons slave flash, and a vivitar 2000 flash (the d500 board, it has the biggest capacitor) It is in a pelican 1150 box. Test photos at my dads house the flash would reach about 80 feet. It was a little dim out that far, but I could still see the dogs pretty good. The only problem with the big flash is if the animal is less than 10 feet from the cam, the flash washes the photo out. Total finished price was a lot less than a camtrakker ($750), but I used all new parts, so it was kind of expensive, but it takes really good pictures. Hope this helps GMM -

I got my camera set up to turn on and off with the board. The cam bats I have last about 400 pictures with flash. The C batteries you see in the picture run the board, I have heard of them lasting over a year. My card will hold 979 pics in regular quality and 293 in high quality. I havent checked shq yet, but I think hq is good enough for me. I also like being able to see photos without having to develope film. GMM -

Kevin, the camera I would need is a sony U 20 or U 30. Both of them are just a little bigger than 2 AA batteries. Im just waiting till the price of the camera comes down a little bit. On my current set ups I used olympus D360L cameras. Treestandman, you could probably get someone else to build it for you if you supply them the parts. I thought it was going to be hard the first time, but it turned out easy, now Im hooked. GMM -

Treestandman, Im not selling these unill I get some more built. Will probably be a while till that happens. I am in the process of building another with a smaller camera. I should be able to fit them in a 2.5" x 4" box. If you have about 1/2 a day of spare time, you can build one yourself easily. That is what I recommend because you know how to troubleshoot it if something happens to it. Also it costs a lot less. My first one cost only about $65 to build, and it takes great photos, better than all of my friends commercial cameras (store bought at $250 a whack!!). I looked on some websites for something that my two new digitals compares to, and most digitals cost from $350 to $750, I built two for the same price as one of the lower grade models. I built mine for $153 total cost each!! The hardest part to doing these is getting the holes drilled in the right spot, the electronic soldering is easy. Also, there are digital cameras out there you dont even have to take apart, just plug the controller into it. Check out the links I left in the other trail cam thread, once you see how it is done you will see its not hard at all. GMM -

I have links posted in the thread called trail cameras. The guys there will help any way they can, and they also have instrucions, tips, and just about everything you need to make them. There are 100's of different combinations you can do by building your own. also the home made ones arent as bad to leave in the woods because they cost less to build. GMM -
I would set it over water, all animals have to drink. It is a very good method during Aug. because the deer will really need water. Another good method is ground blinds at water, all it takes is about 30 min. of your time. I have personally used both, and prefer the ground blind, because nobodt will steal it. I have had 1 commercial treestand stolen and 2 aluminum home made ones stolen. These were from unit 31, now I hunt 32 and go deep in the wilderness so I dont want to carry treestands with me, so I use ground blinds. One bad thing about ground blinds, use scent free OFF bug spray if the blind is near grass. I was attacked by chiggers last year and itched like crazy for a month. You can get a scent free type with deet that should work good. Hope this helps GMM

I like to be out all day. I usually cold camp in the wilderness so I dont really have anywhere to go. I wake up with the sun and usually start glassing. Then I eat breakfast after glassing a while, summer sausage and crackers. Then I go to the area I want to be most of the day, I still hunt for a while. Snack time is usually jerkey. Still hunt some more, then lunch, sausage and crackers. A lunch I usually try to find a water hole with lots of deer sign to eat by. I glass while I eat and listen carefully, I have had a bunch of deer come in at lunch time. Nap time (only after the second day, when I start to feel all the walking) I usually just crash where I ate. Deer seem to be very active at this time, it seems like I just get to sleep and they come to the water, and trust me, if you are barely waking up and a doe screams at you, you do it back(and might have to change your pants). After nap I glass a while then still hunt. At night I eat sausage and crackers, but I usually carry 2 cans of thick and chunky soup for the 3rd and 4th night, I do get tired of summer sausage.(unless I get lazy and eat both of them the first night because they are the easiest way to take weight out of my pack) 5th day I go home in evening. This is archery deer hunting, I hunt everything a little different. GMM

I was wondering what people were using to handgun hunt on here. I hope to get drawn for a rifle deer hunt this year so I can use mine. I used to use a ruger .357mag, then I gave it to my wife because she can hit stuff with it and I cant. I now use a Taurus Raging Bull 454 casull with a 2x6 power burris scope on it. I can put 10 bullets in a 4" circle at 200 yards with it if the conditions are right. Just wanted to know what you use. GMM

handguns

I just looked at 03-04 regs and there were 600 tags available for my first choice hunt in 02 and there was over 2000 people that put in for it. I will probably put in for it again first choice, then try for wt hunts on the rest, heck, I just might get a tag this year. GMM
