no, not really. I practiced with it a lot at the range so I just got myself used to it. I will say that if the Velcro isn't tight it makes noise in high winds. Definitely works though!

Chuckar
davidkucharik replied to azbirdhunter88's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Empire Ranch has a ton!!! They aren't native to that area, but there is some kind of competition with horses and quail every year. They let the birds go and if you get them after the competition, before the coyotes do, there is quail and chukar. -
Dove for dinner

Does anyone notice a difference in taste? The ones further north taste a lot different from the ones more southward. Although I wasn't too keen on the ones from Marana, soy plants kinda jaded the taste. -

there is a pair of them that hang out off 83. PM me and ill let ya know where. I dove hunt there and always see them. -
tanned or not?? If you are tanning them yourself, try Dickman's. A lot of people wont skin their deer, and they have Dickman do it, they get thrown away.

I have bloodhound/walker hound mix. I got her for a hunting dog, however she is gun shy(I know theres ways to fix that, I am just not able to). We have 3 other dogs that she gets along with, but she wants to establish dominance, and this causes way too many fights. We also have 2 boys, that really try and give her attention, but she is anti social towards them. So the best option is to give her away, but the sites I am finding here in Tucson are not exactly stellar in my opinion. I just need a site that will allow me to give her to a good home. I would like to screen out all the puppy mill people, or the ones who will put her right back into the same situation she is in now.

Sad to say, but people WILL steal your gas out of your cans in your campin area. Solution....Use gas cans marked DIESEL.....But fill them with gas.......Keeps people secong guessing whats really in there!!!!!!!

Me and the boys love to camp while hunting. But snakes and such can ruin a trip during the velvet season. I have a trailer i use for dirt bikes and general hauling, has anyone modified a trailer to put a tent on? Post up some pics if you would, I'd like to get a few ideas.

I did a search and couldn't find the info I was needing. So, if there is already a topic, please let me know and I will take a gander..... But, whats the best arrow? Any thoughts on the Maxima Red's??
-
I guess I should add....As of now myself and my youngest son are sharring arrows. So its now time to shoot separate arrows. Im shooting 273-275 FPS with 70LB draw, with 29 inch arrows and I believe 28- 30 draw length... My son is shooting 172 FPS same length arrow, 19 -20 inch draw length and a 50LB draw We are both using 100 GR muzzy's. I was looking at the RED's, but was told at the archery shop they aren't much better than the Gold Tip Hunter XT's. And that My son should be shooting a long arrow probly the 250 XT's, and I should be at the 350 XT's.... They are half the price, but half the quality?? Ive shot Beemans, Red Heads, and Easton Storms. What I need is good flight and heavy penetration for both bows..... I like the looks and reviews of the Maxima Red Mathews edition, but feel its not what would work best for both of us.Plus that's probly the sexiest looking arrow available!!! ( and no, I'm not going to shoot an arrow on pure sexualness.....but it had to be said!)

Thoughts on what NM unit for Barbary sheep
davidkucharik replied to ClarkW's topic in Other Big Game
I cant remember the unit number, but when I lived in Alamogorgo, if you went south on HWY 54 and turned down road 506( its the road that has the border patrol check station on it) go over the railroad tracks, and its about 20 miles or so befor you are OFF McGreggor range and onto public land. Theres a lot of Antelope out there as well. But the road splits and one goes to Pinon, and the other goes somewhere else. But at the base of those hills/mountains I always found a heard of sheep while I was hunting Oryx or coyotes. Theres also sheep on McGreggor range, but you need a person with access. And I was told, but never seen any, that around silver city there is sheep. -
I have a chocolate lab- "the great pillow hunter" is his name, that's all he will hunt. And he is gun shy, wont swim in my pool, and wont retrieve anything.....I take him out every time we go, and he is doin a little better, He just hit his 1 yr mark. Is this normal?

So I hunt a lot out on Alta Ranch, around coppercut off Saurita, Empire Ranch....But I only find 1 or 2 coveys at a time, and maybe get 5 birds a trip. can anyone point me in a better direction? I did try Kings Anville last year, had a little better luck, but honestly, its the neighborhoods that are COVERED in quail, and not my hunting spots........Any help is appreciated...

Breeding for personal use?
davidkucharik posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
So heres my question. I bought a dog out in Wilcox, and he is a good dog. ( cant get him to hunt) but I posted that in another topic....So if I am not planning to breed him for his "Bloodline" or his "name" so to speak, is it ok to breed him with another persons dog strictly for hunting purposes or family companion? I never registered my dog because that was never important to me. I don't care what his bloodline is, or any of that fancy stuff, I just care that he hunts with me and the boys and is good to my kids. I don't even care if he is a good huntin dog, just having him tag along and be there is all I need. So with that in mind, Is it wrong to breed him? Find someone who also isn't interested in bloodline and fancy registration, but just wants another huntin buddy/family pet? Id be willing to breed him for a pick of the the first yellow lab pup. But keep in mind, withought him being registered, I can't breed him for $$ OR use his heritage legally. That was never my intent, I'd just like another huntin companion for him. Any thoughts? -
Breeding for personal use?

Sometimes he likes to, I put quail feathers in a stuffed animal and let him fetch that. But sometimes he just walks away from it and lays down on the couch..... -
Breeding for personal use?
davidkucharik replied to davidkucharik's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
To answer a few questions, Yes his bloodline on both his moms side and dad side is good on the hip displacia. they gave us the certs for all that. As for the rest, I spoke to a few members on here, and dog training may just be what he needs. We took him out today, and he didn't run away when my son was shooting at birds, so I hope this means he is getting better. As for the bloodline, his dad was a great hunter and mom was pretty average. We got to see his profile. So I agree these traits can be passed on, but also can skip. If mine turns out to be a non-hunter, despite his mom and dad, then its assumable that he could pass on traits of his father that he didn't get. He is only a year old, so it isn't time for that yet, by the time he is ready, I will know more. Also understand its probly my fault. We treat him like a family member, table scraps sometimes, sleeps in the boys bed, stays inside on the couch when its hot. So I know I'm not helping, so maybe a dog trainer is what he will need. As for the other questions, I would rely on the person with the female to be knowledgeable on that. I know nothing about breeding, so I'd have to depend on their knowledge. I can show you what I have, but I myself cannot decifer what it all means. Also, I'm sure plenty of you guys on here have a good amount of knowledge/experience and could help make that call. I agree with not breeding a dog that isn't able to be bread, so I will keep updating and let you all know how he is doing. I also don't mind anyone wanting to look at him that knows what to look for. As for pups not being wanted, again I'd be relying on the other party to know if he should be bread, so that should alleviate that, like I said I have all his paperwork. I'm just not in it for profit. I want another dog, and would like to maybe trade a dog for good dog training if someone had that skill and wanted to do that, and I'm totally for paying it forward. Theres a lot of people who hunt, but may not be able to afford a dog, so with this forum being as big as it is, I'm sure we could find GOOD homes. I appreciate all the insight, and you guys have been a big help and raised some good questions. Please feel free to ask as many questions as possible. All the input helps. This may turn out to be a good idea, or it may be determined that we should NOT do it, so thanks again. -
Getting ready for quail
davidkucharik replied to azbirdhunter88's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I do a lot of snake hunting, they are definitely still out and about. But unfortunately I run into a lot when im quail hunting also... -
I should also mention I was using 3 blade schawkers. I believe that may be the reason for no blood trail. if the arrow hit bone, or between the ribs right at the sternum, it could have jammed the broadhead and caused it not to open. It would also explain why it knocked him back, and dropped him to the knees, before he ran off. more like a punch than a puncture.
