My son has a Unit 6A tag. He took his first deer, (doe), last year with a Kaibab Junior's only hunt. We have spent a couple of weekends scouting, (hoofing/glassing) and were tripping over mulies. We finally found a few Coues in the lower elevation, (scrub desert), of the Southern tip of Unit 6A. Are we on the right track? Any suggestions would be appreciated as I probably only have one more weekend to scout his tag before the season starts. Thanks

Thanks for the scoop. Where we finally started spotting them is some really rough desert country. More "poke'ya and hurt'ya" type cactus per square foot then I have seen anywhere in AZ. I'll be hitting it again but will remember my leg "gators" this weekend.

If you plan on hand loading and working up a load for a rifle long range coues specific plus are looking for something 25-06ish then look at the ballistics of the 257 WBY Mag. It is real fast and flat shooting. The caliber will limit your rifle selection unless you plan on spending some extra cash to have a rifle rebarreled for this caliber. As I get older I'm becoming more of what I think is "practical". I have shot and owned quite a few of the more exotic calibers. I now prefer to own rifles in a caliber where I know that I'll find a few boxes of shells in both Walmart. the little general store in Happy Jack, AZ and the gas station in Alpine, AZ. That is why I would go with something in 300 Win Mag or 30-06. Plus the 30 caliber is loaded in such a wide bullet weight variety you can have one rifle for everything in North America.

Wow, that is a blast from the past. I owned a rifle in the caliber in the '80s. It was a really flat shooter. The only thing I hunted with it was jack rabbits around the Congress, AZ area. I used the lighter bullets and was pushing them around 4200 fps. I eventually sold it because of the cost of ammo/brass. It was a very catostraphic event when I hit bunnies with it.
