  1. Cause I dont know what one to get yet. looking at a 300mm we borrowed one of my buddies 200mm and I liked it but thinking of going bigger with a better aperture for more light . his one was just the stock 55
  2. Not even close to harassing animals. we saw these lopes 4-500 yards out off the main road. figured I would drive to the next hill so she could sneak up on them over the ridge. soon as I start driving down the road they bolted so we stopped at the ridge kid got out of truck to sneak up on them, didnt even make it to other side and they ran right to us. we got those pics also. shoot happens kinda sucks. BTW this is the small heard of 4 that hang out by the cement place off the perkins ville road on the south side by the tracks. the north side of the road have a herd of about 30-60 lopes depending on the time of the year.
  3. Yeah the kids pretty resourceful she happened to see that video a while back of those elk with locked horns figure WTF she can do that too... Seriously I took her out turkey hunting for the morning and shed hunting. shes still pretty jazzed about it.

    Early Scouting

I had a simple goal like that too many many years ago in unit 9. after hundreds of trips up there I still find lopes where I never thought they would be. up until about 8-10 years ago I was in unit 9 15-20 times a year if not more in the earlier years. coolest animals in Az are lopes. good luck

Late 7E Bull - Scout Tips

Yup and they look just like this. kid even hiked it with her boots not tied up. I'm not doing getting into this canyon this year 2 years in a row was rough. this year I am on the top in one of the saddles. cool part about canyons like these is you see no one for days and lots of game. not unit 7 pics
  6. Iv'e hunted all my life in tennis shoes mainly cause they are quiet. went through 2 pairs last elk season. this year going to carry tennis shoes and wear boots, then change when we start stalking. my feet just cant take it anymore.
  7. Also practice holding bow back as long as you can, let down slowly and draw again. Yes what B/C said definatly practice holding your bow back as long as you can, then let off do it again then let off do it again but this time shoot just before your too tired. do this a bunch of times through out the year. you will be surprised how your arrows hit and how better you will get over the year. Daughter learned this the hard way last year. decent bull she drew back 3 times. when the bull finally got out of the bushs and a decent shot she was beat. in a way it was a good thing he moved back into the brush before she shot cause it would have been a poor shot forsure. she even commented on she was glad he moved and she didnt take the shot. shes a target shooter so she lets off often, but when your Adrenalin is going and your heart is in your throat its a whole nother ball game.
  8. I liken it to bed fishing for bass with a 5 year old. your going to see a ton of bulls call in a ton of bulls and have an absolute blast. the only problem is getting that perfect shot. sometimes you do sometimes you dont, but it doesnt make any difference cause being out there that time of the year is a blast. we hunt differently do lots of walking, calling, and glassing till Dad (me)gets tired at about noon then head to camp and back at it at 3 till dark. we always carry stuff in case we are out very late lots of snacks and a ton of water. In the am I was bringing 2 bottles of water and my daughter bringing 2. now we bring 4-6 each per hike, nothing like looking at a soup green smelly butt cattle pond thinking man this is going to taste good. one spot we hunt is along a canyon to the end about 8-9 miles then back again. takes us till about noon-2 with a bunch of elk in between both ways. best advice I can give you is bring plenty of water and start scouting now and every weekend you have avail. at the very least just to get familiar with the area. very few people will scout early and wait till 3-4 weeks before only to find out work and house stuff prevents them from getting out. then you end up on the internet doing the escouter thing. Oh yeah watch for freaking rattle snakes when your out there in sept. not as many as you see while bear hunting but there out there,

so what your saying is you only will be satisfied with an early bull hunt . I believe almost every hunter wants a early bull tag. mathematically it still doesnt work.

Oh please dont play the poor pitiful kids crap. if your kids dont get drawn its 100% because of you. every hunter who gets a tag can pass that Tag to there kids (best rule ever made). I've passed every tag I have gotten to my kids since the law, before the law if I got drawn I let them shoot it. but hey that's me early bull lopes north rim deer tags etc etc if I ever get a ram tag they will get it. the problem is most parents are selfish. they only put in cow or youth hunts, or doe hunts for there kids if they even put them in.. just like the bass fishing tourny. crowd oh yeah they take there kids BLUEGILL fishing from shore BFD instead of bass fishing like their parents. kids dont want that crap they want to hunt/fish just like there dads and put stuff on the wall just like there dads. and there cheap they dont want to spend a 135 on there kid they will be happy with a general squirrel tag save the good tags for me I have more fun watching my kids hunt or friends kids hunt than me hunting. its a hoot and its always successful whether they tag out or not.

See thats the whole problem right there! we let women think. Back to the kitchen were you belong. seriously you do realize that most of the population came to this state in early to mid 1990's, not only that then what about the guy who went to school here then went off to the military and came back. if they could accommodate phrase scares me. everyone's got excuses especially when its self serving,

Crap I am liking this idea more and more. for cost you take all the average cost of all species both res and non res . Jim Bob from Georgia just got himself a $1200 archery turkey tag. but hey he's going hunting. Game and fish could make BANK and we all know they need the money. its a win win for everyone.

Your 100% right the system is flawed. if they would take out the bonus points system completely out and have everyone on equal terms including NON resIdents it would not be flawed. its a lottery, some win some dont. a bunch of years ago the clowns on AZOD and a few other boards were trying to get the G&F commision to give out extra bonus points for certain things like conservation, attending G&F meetings, Public service , There were some other stupid ones as well. all the while complaining the system wasnt fair and playing the poor poor pitiful me card. while trying to stack the deck so to speak for personal satisfaction. A system that could allow you to go an entire lifetime without ever drawing a tag, would in my opinion, be more flawed then the one we have today. Oh so you Want The "Everyone is a winner system" option using your logic I dont think would mathematically work if everyone put in only for a early bull rifle tag, if you really want it "FAIR" for everyone to get a chance to hunt "ELK" then maybe we could go. Heres a perfectly fair system but you might not like it. everyone puts in for "ELK" tag take the 25,125 elk tags that they passed out this year and start drawing randomly on the computer. That will make 25,125 people get a tag. next year do it again but only giving those who didnt draw the 1st year a tag and keep on repeating till everyone is covered then start it over. is that fair enough? or do you want a certain unit a certain weapon a certain time and a certain sex? but heck why stop there lets make the system even more fair for those who say they never get drawn for anything. everyone applies to HUNT game and fish draws for tags, this way you will have a better chance at being able to HUNT this year. heck maybe your hoping for that once in a lifetime Ram tag and only get a Pig tag or better yet your hoping for a archery turkey tag and get drawn for a ram tag. I personaly think this would be a much funner option. cause the reading the the forums would be funny as shoot. besides it would help archery and muzzle loading sales. a "HUNTER" would then need to have all three types of weapons, not to mention he wouldnt know if he was going out for a elk steak or a mug pig pie. Yup someone will alway feel left out no matter what happens

    3/17 CC Hits?

it took me 15 years if I recall to get my 1st elk, after that I get them quite often when I put in.. I am not an elk fan so i only put in so I can give it to my kids. I believe this is my last year I can pass the tag to to my last one. 2 years ago her 1st app she got a unit 8 early archery bull, last year I drew the exact same tag and gave it to her, this year one of us got drawn for elk according to the hit on the cc. all my elk tags have always been bulls, some early bull rifle always in units 8 or 9. I am almost certain about 8 years ago I got a 4th or 5th pic in unit 8 for late bull. I only started putting in for archery elk 2 years ago.(this year I put in for both rifle and archery. She also put in for rifle bull, 4th and 5th were rifle cow picks. so kinda hoping she got a rifle bull tag or I got a rifle bull tag to sign over to her. she doesnt care what she shoots cow or bull she just wants an elk. and with the exception of my 1st elk and antelope tag every tag has been drawn with a max of 3 bonus points (counting the hunters ed point). deer on the other hand is another story. before I got my first elk tag. I got a rifle deer tag with my Father and his 2 friends from out of state every year on the north rim. usually 12a west. after I got my 1st elk tag, rifle deer tags come about every 4-5 years always on the north rim tag. had times when I put in for lower units and cant get crap. but I bow hunt deer as its my favorite species to hunt aside from lopes. 2017 is starting out great!!!

dang I thought I was the lucky one. theres 2 more of you? I got 3 rifle lope tags in 5 years didnt put in one of those years all unit 9. I just started putting in again 3 years ago. cause our youngest daughter hunts. every time I drew a lope tag I drew a early bull rifle tag or a 13 a/b deer tag. early bull rifle tag sucked with the lope tag as they were the same days to hunt. only thing that made it nice was unit 8 bull and unit 9 lope so had kinda a short drive . hunted in the am for elk and at 9-10 I drove to unit 9 to hunt lopes then at 3-4 I headed back to unit 8 every day for the entire season. I signed the rifle lope tag over to our oldest daughter as she didnt want the bull elk tag hehe neither did I. she ended up killing a decent one last day(or day before last day) I believe the 1st shot at it was like 10-15 yards. walked right up to the scrub oak she was hiding in. Now I am just hoping for an archery tag or a 13a/b tag rifle or archery lope tag, doesnt look like it this year though, one of us got a elk tag though so maybe we could still get hit for lopes

Planning 2017 high country mule deer hunt

az but its really not "HIGH COUNTRY" we hunted co in the following units for rifle elk with a 4point or better deer tag back in the 80s and 90s otc tags white river area, grand mesa, and whenimucha wilderness area. all good for deer. we back packed in and took friends horses on one hunt inside whenimuchi we always saw tons of big deer but always after the rifle part of the season closed. They have or used to have early archery in there as well. would love to go back to grand mesa in the next year or 2 with my daughter its a blast, Trout fishing is also off the hook there as well

    Kit Fox habitat

Used to hunt them with guns all the time, got kinda boring and frankly To easy. About 4 years ago Daughter wanted to try archery, she got hooked talked me back into it. I got hooked, then I got hooked on varmit hunting with a bow. thats and absolute blast like nothing anyones ever tried before aside from a knife ( and a buddy and I did that ONCE). last 2 years we gone out we called in a ton of yotes usually call in 2-3 a day. 5 yards 10 yards 20 yards kinda hard to take a shoot when they are standing aways looking at you. but the rush is awsum. This year if it ever cools down we are going to do lots of it again. 80's and 90's I mainly hunted unit 9 12 13 and whitetanks. I had a real job so got weekends off hunted 3 days a week for them and almost every day after work in the white tanks. varmit hunting is the only hunting I get really excited about. deer elk killed many don't like the taste so plus pne shot its over for the year. going next week forsure a few days and maybe this weekend as well with the bows. the golden years of predator calling Yes it was, however the last 4 years have been pretty dang good we always get into them. the golden years of predator calling Pretty much before electronic calls. First year the Navajo Rez opened up to contests he and I killed 16 and took 2nd place out of 28 teams. Should have been 1st but they kept the weigh in time open for another 20 minutes and we got beat by one dog. never been to the res. for numbers we go up to the north rim or unit 9 after 1st snow. north rim you can fart and call them in. we got the e-caller just for archery. it helps but they still walk right up to us or by us and look at the call or us. still got my 1985 critter calls (green half reed one) best calls I ever used
