let's see some pics of some goat from recent years
Delw replied to huntermncb's topic in Antelope Hunting
Heres my 3, the one buy it self was my 1st tag in AZ (daughters recent deadhead in foreground) was a 700+ yard shot in the neck. Funny story with this one, I got up there the day before opener. got a call at 4:30 in the am saying we had a major problem at work and I needed to come back immed.. Packed all my shoot up which amounted to a sleeping bag tarp and some water jugs and headed back to phx back stalling for 1st light. got 1 mile away and saw this one in a flat. got out of truck walked to a small small rise and shot it. was back at work by 10-11am. the 2 together are the last 2 I drew for. 3 tags in like 5 years all unit 9 rifle, I gave the tag to out oldest daughter she shot it at like 25 yards or less, we watched it walking towards us for about a mile and it walked right up the the scrub oak we were hid in. the lope we were after got shot opening morning by a guy in utah. I was elk hunting early rifle bull in unit 8 that morning. we probably watched 40-75 bucks in 5 days before she decided to go back and try the one she killed. we drove every day from unit 8 to unit 9 hunting elk in 8 in the mornign till 10 then up to unit 9 for lopes then at 4 back to unit 8 for evening elk she shot it on second to last day of hunt. had a heck of a good time with her. somewhere I got outdoor pics but cant find the hard drive so I took these the other day. I dont know how to use a camera that well on a smart phone I just got. so the pics are crappy -
Raghorn thats some awsum country. I spent almost every other 4 days in that west of big springs to east of the 12a border from 1982-1987 including winters, summers sprngs and the entire archery season I hunted from 2 weeks before start to 1 week after all on vacation( I had a 4 on 4 off schedual ). lots of back packing. I almost went to work for the saw mill up in ferdonia in 84, good thing i didnt they shut down they shut down shortly after. I havent been to that area since around 2008. been trying to get a 12west archery tag since they started archery draw, however always end up with a 13a 12b or 13b rifle tag( i think ive gotten 4 or 5 tags rifle tags since 1998 up there I was new to the super fast small dia cals at that time(dave jerry and kevin over at randalls got me into those pdog plinkers years and years ago). I always used a .300 winmag .308 243 or 270. all my hunting cals I use nosler ballistic tips since they 1st came out with them still shoot them in the neck and have absolutely no problem I still have 4-5 25-06's too but mostly use .243 and .300 winmag anymore.

No read the bottom paragraph post 20. he wouldnt let me have it. even offered him a ton of money even threaten to fire him and his wife ( j/king of course) he found it his words were "finders keepers," but if it helps any heres approx where I shot it. Ive been hunting that same area from 82-96 both archery and rifle, taken some decent bucks but nothing really nice. I backpacks and drycamped everyone of those fingers/ridges in that area both both east and west of the old cabin that used to be at the end of a road.seen some monster deer and one elk. one of my best calling spots in that area too for varmits. 36°35'4.32"N 112°30'40.13"W I remember seeing it on the side of the hill, shot it thing fell down. pregnant Wife ran up to it with in a few yards it got back up. so shes yelling shoot it shoot it and she ducks behind a tree. I shoot it in the neck again. we wife swore it went up the hills, everyone else said no way down the hill. very little blood showing up the hill then disappeared did take a chunk of meat and fure out of its neck, wife found that where I shot it the second time.. was shooting hot loads out of a 25-06 with game kings. I screwed up. loads didnt expand they were too hot and fast to have a chance because I choose a neck shot. I remember walking on the edge of a decent side rock cliff looking for it.never even thought to look over the edge straight down. only big game animal I ever wounded with a gun. I personally think it was running/staggering and slipped of the rimrock or was running folded up and slide off it. "

Dont have any and I wish I did. didnt have a digital one back then. I know the guy used to work for fortner and gifford in prescott back in 93 so did his wife. hadnt seen him since I left in 95 you know whats sad. I just tried to think of anyone who saw it (didnt know the NM guys) My father passed away and so did his buddy, My wifes friend moved out of state and lost touch, the guys at randalls "Big Dave" passed away too he knew about it wow talk about a bad trip down memory lane. I shot it with a smith and wesson 25-06 rifle I bought from his personal collection he was a very close friend of mine. so your going to have to take my word on that one or I might get lucky and theres a before picture somewhere on my 30+ rolls of film I am still getting developed which reminds me I need to drop a few rolls off. (yup had them that long in the fridge. and surprisingly a few rolls turned out not terribly bad) we should have some really cool pics of stuff on VHS and film cameras

I dont think a bleached out skull and horns are going to be that much of a problem. From most G&F guys unless they are dicks or you give them reason for concern/ to think otherwise I think the problem will be more of a nice 1-2 month old deadhead thats still brown. reason is they think someone shot it and planned on coming back later and pick it up ie intent. Back in the 90s that was a rumor going around people shooting stuff in dec and picking them up in feb in unit 6a. Same thing up in units 12b and 13's cause its in the middle of nowhere. Ive done a ton of varmit hunting in those units from dec to march and never ran across a dead head.and I do a ton of walking I found maybe 2 during the deer hunts that were bleached out. My kid on the other had found more in 3 years than I have found in 30 years. My buddy and I were hunting(he went along for the ride) in 94 unit 12a, I had gotten drawn again, I had a tag in 93 and shot a very nice 30" plus deer. we had 6 people looking for it for 3-4 days I went up every weekend for a couple of months. never found it. I was sick over it and obsessed with finding it. 25 yard shot too. witnessed by me my Pregnant wife her friend a New mexico G&F guy and his buddy(that happend to see it when I was shooting it) with the same tag. My dad and his buddy came too help use find it(4 of us got drawn 2 from out of state) The next year with my buddy I am hunting the same spot he is just along for the ride. showed him were I shot it and where we last saw it. he was walking back to the truck and looked over the cliff there it was sitting in the top of a scrub oak 20 feet down. the deer instead of going up the hill like I thought we saw him do JUMPED over the cliff. The rack was stuck in the tree, he saw the white bones at the bottom and then the rack in the tree and started yelling for me. last I saw the rack it was sitting on his coffee table at his apartment. 1st time he ever went out hunting let alone walked in the woods and 2k wouldn't even buy it back from him or even threatening to fire him I didnt even know about this rule until I read it on here a while ago. do I care? yes if its a brown I will call someone, still going to take it and take alot of pics and mark location, if its bleached I am taking pics and packing it out and be done with it.

Creed we never seen people when were hiking around. lots of trucks driving down roads when were at camp. I shouldn't say never, 3 years ago never saw one people for a week in one area off the main road about 1 mile back. last year there I called in 6 hunters 3 of them from out of a truck. 2 guys called in 3 times in the exact same spot. saw 9 vehicles up and down this little 2 tract in 3 days. only one knew there was elk in there the rest drove right by a few decent bulls. so we moved to a different spot rest of the season only saw people when we were at camp or driving. they were going to there own spots. even the popular tanks we have hunted we don't see anyone. had only one person walk up on us at elk tank in fhe 4 days we hunted around there and they were going fishing. That goes for archery deer, turkey and early archery bull so basically a whole freaking month and a half. got drawn again same tag early archery bull so we will be in the same spot till we get pushed out which I doubt cause the place looks stupid and people wont even hunt it.

Drew AZ Unit 8 Late season Rifle Bull--Help Please.
Delw replied to Elk_oholic's topic in Elk Hunting
the key word is you said your a meat hunter. I am betting you dont make it past whitehorse lake and already taken a bull. youll never make it into the canyon if we get snow not even with in 10 miles, and you dont need to.be there are elk everywhere in that unit even in the tall pines when its cold and snow on the ground. good luck. Ive hunted that canyon for the last 2 years for elk and 3 years for deer. its not that great and its a bitch even in sept. dont get me wrong theres some nice bulls in there but its a ton of hiking on some very nasty shoot. unit 8 has a ton of places that carry elk all year from the pines to the sage/junipers and east to west north to south. heck they run across i-40 all the time in dec by garland prairie. -
Thats cool your kid found it., funny that they run around like that, mine still does and she's 16 so where was it(antler) in the other pic.

Sucks but it happens. never seen anything caught in a fence except a moose. The Warden and I in 93 was driving up to washington state via montana (scenic drive) came across a baby moose tangle up in a fence along the freeway before the pass. Like the dumb butt I am I figured I could untangle it. HA those babies are huge and mama was a little bit pissed.. after 30 mins I had The Warden drive to the closest gas station and get some help, she got back about he same time a state cop drove up. we worked it for 2 hours getting that thing untangled. mostly because Mama moose was chasing us off. we got some vid of it somewhere it was pretty cool. a work out forsure. The baby was pretty cool it didnt mind being petted. mama moose became somewhat pleasant after she realized we werent hurting the baby. she would just grunt instead of charging at the end. Delw

Like I said nothing special, had a 13a tag in late 80's and was leaning against a mound under a scrub oak glassing a canyon. couldn't get comfortable and found this thing poking in my back. only thing that was showing was a few points. looked like a lion kill. .

Thats cool. My oldest daughter did that to me, we were yote hunting and she was around 5. I was sitting on a hill bihind the whitetanks she goes daddy theres a deer. I'm looking everywhere nothing. well go show me. she runs a 60-70 yards down hill and picks up a little shed
-
Shes pretty stoked about it. all the points are sharp, nothing broken or chewed, the bottom left point has some mud on it. All I heard was OMG OMG as she was running, I never saw it thought she was chasing a bear or lion for a pic. I was 100 yards from here she was about 100 yards from it. then when she yelled skull I figured another spike.
-
yeah I'll get one tomorrow as her deadhead elk and this 3 point are going to the shop so I can make a aluminum mounting plate for them and stick them on the wall. its nothing big or even close to special just a normal buck from the late 80s
-
cool find. that's a weird one only muley intact skull I found was in 13a, was leaning against a mound under a scrub oak one of the few that was with in 100 yards over looking a canyon. trying to get comfortable and i'll be dang a partial buried skull and horns of a 3x3 in that mound.

Delw replied to Delw's topic in Antelope Hunting
haha , that thought crossed my mind. would have been fun forsure, longshooter would have been talking about all the sheep he harnessed down at the local dairy farm. -
she was about to give birth. we wondered why she was so spooky, we see this heard all the time for 4 years. they let us walk right up on them well at least my daughter. I didnt notice this when taking the pics until I uploaded them to the pc. we were just parked kid was sneaking up to get her pictures like she always doe's

you think this is bad you should have seen some of the fools back in the 80's when we were using paintballs on elk. its all good, btw she aint a little girl shes 16 has around a 25-30 hour a week job that male teenagers refuse to do, goes to school full time 3rd in her class, volunteers at a community center and shoots competition archery coa, I was being sarcastic to your sarcasm about the lens. the real reason I haven't bought her one yet is cause I am going to surprise her on her birthday with a brand new Vacuum -
She was still laughing about that this morning when she went to school and the " My other vehicle is a Vacuum" for her jeep tire cover.
-
she got drawn for the early bull hunt 2 years ago, I got drawn last year for the early hunt bull hunt and signed my tag over to her. and surprise surprise I got drawn this year again for the early bull hunt and will sign it over to her. I look at it this way I get go go hunting either way, Ive killed enough shoot in my life let the kids have fun. its not about killing its about having a good time with your kids.

TY its cool she likes to hunt. she loves being outdoors and every day I have off and she has off we hunt. she got me back into hunting with a bow about 4-5 years ago. and shes an absolute blast to be around shes pretty hard core and passionate about it. this will be her 3rd unit archery bull elk hunt in unit 8 in 3 years. hopefully this year she will get a shot she is happy with and release an arrow. she's had plenty of chances from 8 yards to 50 target shooters are picky and a tad slow
