swiss army knife The real ones, cause it can go anything. might be slow but the best emergency knife around. but a real knife have to agree with sparky my dads K-bar from vietnam. he gave it to me back in the early 70's cause he had others and abused the crap out of it and I still have it and the others today.

#1 try to walk on the game trails # if your behind them your too late elk walk fast even when there just moseying along, only thing you could have done is hiked up the canyon and got ahead of them they had to be going somewhere. I know its easier said than done. 1. How the heck do you get through the thick forests with the twigs, aspen leaves and pine cones crunching away and not alerting every animal within 200 yards of your presence? 2. We saw tons of sign - fresh trail tracks, fresh(er) scat, rubs, bedding areas, but didn't see buy 1 elk which was luck, since we were both walking the same direction (deeper up a canyon/into woods). With all the sign, shouldn't we have seen more elk? I know hunting isn't a guarantee, and we almost had one... Thanks again.

sounds like you were on the same trail they were and they just wanted to go farther. I see no problem with it. people bitch about the stupiest things anymore.

I used to do alot of hunting camping fishing in the winter months in Washington and Arizona cold never bothered me. Sleeping in Campers, truck cab overs and trucks with canopies were colder than sleeping on the ground. the wind and cold blows under the and you freeze. I usually throw a tarp down then a wool blanket, then my sleeping bag with a wool blanket in it. and I am good to go. I sleep right next to the fire. I use the tarp 1st if there is snow on the ground. generally dont use a tent except in the summer for the shade and to keep the bugs away. cost are fantactic but even but the cold blwoing under them will freeze ya. one year The Warden(aka wife) introduced me to motels yote hunting up on the north rim.. so now I just bring cash when its cold out. Kid wants to jan camp up in unit 8 for deer this year. She crazy Im getting a room in williams. Heater in a camper 5th wheel would be pretty cool but I worry about carbon monoxide, we got pretty sick one year hunting grand mesa wilderness area in CO using a lantern in a decent size tent with the door flaps open. I aint doing that crap ever again. Delw

wow nice shot, that a kit? Yes, 1st one I even call in or seen in the day time it was around 1pm. we were yote hunting with some friends and spooked up a very nice buck, so she ran back to truck and got her bow. we hunted that buck from the schools Christmas break to dec 31 almost every day. seen it almost every day as well that was probably the smartest deer I have ever seen. he hung out in the really thing river bottom behind me but would bed in those hills just behind the kid. came in twice to a varmit squeeler varmit call too. just windy or too far to get a shot. after we saw the deer the 1st time we had to crank her bow up to legal hunt lbs then shoot a few shots to resight in. I took mine a few times out then quit taking it and of coarse we saw it often when she was the only one with the bow. would have made no difference I cant hit crap with my bow. fun time forsure.

if you park in the park anywhere legally yes. most of the times they dont worry about people getting out of the cars on the few back dirt roads

thats a cool looking rack congrats to him

I am betting it was longshooter and he got lost again

Oh man those were the good old days, what ever happened to the guy in tucson that was the head cop on that forum? he was always fun. I think his name was gilbert? Then there was Thunderless Dan posting BS about a friend or brother coming back from iraq or something heck maybe it was Vietnam and killing a herd of elk with a m-16 south of winslow, but he didnt turn him in nor was he involved so he said.
-
Naw dude I dont get mad, I just call BS when I see it. somethings just not right with this thread. every post he posted contradicted himself. first it was on the ground for 2 more trigger pulls then got up and looked at him broad side. then few posts later he couldnt figure out why it didnt drop like a rock.
-
BTW this is a shot the kid took on her first animal with a bow. I called it in while looking for a buck we had spooked earlier. it was a straight on shot at 40 yards windy day from a 12 year old kid wearing a picachu t-shirt ,a pair of jeans and a pink freakin 25lbs bow we watched the fox circle around behind us. his head was just above a rock, the only thing she had to shoot at was the throat.(4inch x 4inch square maybe) either hit the throat or rock or watch it bounce off the forehead. I told her not to shoot she said I wont miss. arrow flew it dropped like a rock, well not really flipped over backwards and then dropped like a rock. She didnt forget what bow she was shooting nor did she dry fire her bow 2 times while it was laying on the ground. Just say'n

I didnt think of it that way but now that you mentioned it.... and the wy he posted could be a possibility
-
Hopefully you are in a multiple bag limit unit since you state you already shot one this year?
-
I'm still calling BS the red spots on my marked up picture is more than likely where you hit it.. there is no way in 4377 you hit it even close to where you said. if you had it would have taken out a windpipe, throat jugler back shoulder on the pictures left side anyone or all of those. if you hit it where you said on the pink dot that never happened either. I could have sworn you said as the cat was on the ground..... this post is BS

Why so negative? I think the guy just wanted some opinions on his situation. As a near perfect hunter, I suppose you were entitled to give him yours so you did. delw killed 300 coyotes a year every year in the 80s and 90s using a circe, knows unit 12b better than anyone alive, and he turns down 380-400" bulls when everyone else cant find any. No not true on the odd years is was only 250 yotes

Why so negative? I think the guy just wanted some opinions on his situation. As a near perfect hunter, I suppose you were entitled to give him yours so you did. Maybe you should go back to face book where everything is nice and positive. watching a grown man make excuess's for a piss poor shot is typical of todays generation. Crap happens who cares. it could have been all said in one post rather than drawing it out to 3-4 posts. the only part that slightly bothered me is his lack of self awareness as to what firearm he was shooting. the rest he could have gut shot it and let it run off and I could have cared less.
-
Where you aimed and where you hit are 2 different things, I think you just made a bad shot. if you cant remember what firearm you were using how do you expect to remember where you hit it. if you really hit it where you said even with in 2-3 inchs it would be dead. The shock alone from that caliber at that range with that bullet would have killed it. trying to blame the shot on bullets or an angle is just an excuse your using to not accept the fact you made a piss poor shot. everyone makes bad shots, even I did it once in my life I just dont make excuess's for it.

Trapdoor if its any consolation young boys don't try to hard to hunt. they wont until a later age. I don't know why but just seen it over the last 40+ years. None of my friends when I was a kid liked to hunt except one, all my daughters friends dont show any interest nor do my adult friends boys. what ever you do don't push him, he will come around sooner or later.. I have found the boys have very little patience so try to get him on game as hard as you can, I know thats not a hunt persay and just killing but thats life, it might be a good idea to let him take a friend with you guys as well might want to start with some varmit hunting as your in the right area for quick hunts. Ive taken alot of my friends kids and my daughters friends out hunting and the boys were the hardest but they did have a blast and still talk about it today, but trying to get them to hunt again is like pulling teeth. most young boy however do like to go out and shoot targets and at ranges. maybe try that 1st.and before the pig hunt. Daughters on the other hand are gung ho hunting fools, good luck to him on his hunt. and dont worry to much we will come around

Congrats on her deer thats freaking awsum

I dont know man I agree with oz32p we hunt it every year mainly for yotes, quail and archery deer all year long. been hunting since 1982 I see more and more deer in the last 5 than I have at other times.we dont hunt the roads or 2 tracks either we just walk the nasty steep canyons.. Daughter was at the base of yarnell hill and decided to see how far she could go to the top. she saw more deer in 4 hours than we saw in 2 weeks. she made it half way to the top before the cliffs got to her. I sat on my butt and took a nap. that unit is hard to glass deer and thats one reason why people dont see many as its very thick in the canyons. heck just on the popular roads driving to and from some of the spots we hunt we see then along the hills or crossing the dirt. I was always skepitcal about the number of tags over the years 1200 and surprised every jan during the archery hunt how many we see and some very good sized bucks. we never hunted east of yarnell hill or south of 89. usually hit the hill and start walking. north and up. or some of the other mountain ranges
