  3. So I've done the research, and I've called game and fish. Their response was "I don't know". Haha. So let's say you find a sweet glassing spot in unit 125, which allows you to glass into unit 126. Your tag is for unit 126. You're glassing opening morning, and the buck or bull you've been waiting for, walks out and gives you a 300 yard shot. The animal is in your unit, but you're in a different unit. Can you shoot it??? You're technically hunting the right unit, and you kill the animal in the right unit, but your take the shot from a different unit. Is that good to go, or is g&f going to slap the cuffs on you???

Shooting from one unit into another????

Last thing I have to say, is that I never intended to stir the pot, or get anyone fired up. I really just wanted to know what was truly legal. I found my answer, and I hope it helps someone in the future. Sorry if some feathers got ruffled along the way. 👍

https://www.azgfd.com/agency/commission/members/ At the bottom of each person, is a contact link. Contact your commissioners if you don't believe me. Also read the description of their duties at the top of that page. They are the ones to ultimately interpret the laws.

Shooting from one unit into another????

I've already spoken to 3 game wardens and they were no help. All they would say is I don't know. See post above!

Shooting from one unit into another????

Just spoke with the Commissioner. It IS 100% LEGAL to shoot from one unit into another unit, as long as no other rules are broken. No shooting across roads, structures, and so on. I'm not going to list his name (so a million people don't call him), but all of the commissioners are aware of it. So he said call your local commissioner if you don't believe some crazy guy on Coues Whitetail. It IS LEGAL.

Shooting from one unit into another????

What I'm not seeing is the FROM part. You can justify it from either perspective. I can understand it from both sides. What I WANT, is a cut and dry answer here. That's the thing I hate about keyboard warriors. They refuse to try and see a scenario from both sides of the fence. I can see it from your perspective, but you refuse to try and see it from mine. Doesn't make either of us right. I had an hour conversation with an Arizona Game Commissioner, and he didn't know the answer. He didn't criticize me, or say you're wrong because this is the way I feel. He said I see it from my side, and I can see it from your side, let me find out. So why is your opinion on the way you interpret the rules here make it the end all? That's my criticism of your argument. Edit: I'm not trying to be an butt here. I'm not saying I'm right either. And I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying that it is not as cut and dry as you're claiming it is. It definitely leaves room for argument. I'm just wanting a real answer here, not an opinion.

Shooting from one unit into another????

I'm waiting on the AZ game commissioners to discuss it, and give me a real answer. I'll post the facts once I find them out, not my biased "my way is the only way" opinion.

Shooting from one unit into another????

So from your point of view, it is okay to shoot animal in the wrong unit as long as you're "pursuing" from the same unit as your tag, and "taking" from the same unit as your tag. Your logic works both ways. You're just interpreting it the way YOU want to interpret it. Just saying.

Shooting from one unit into another????

Thanks for all the responses. I just found out, i work with one of the Arizona game commissioners. I'm going to contact him next week and get the real scoop. I'll post the results. Thanks again.

Shooting from one unit into another????

It's in az. I just didn't want to give specific units, just in case someone had something they thought I was blowing up. I don't even have a tag this year.

There we go. Thanks for that.

Shooting from one unit into another????

See that's the thing. I'm not hunting that unit. I'm targeting the correct unit. I shoot the correct animal, in the correct unit, with the correct tag. I realize it's a slippery slope. But we're dealing with feelings and emotions here. I lose that battle all day long with the leo that wants to prove his wenus is bigger than mine. I'm looking for hard evidence that says I can NOT do it.
  15. So I hate to sell this rifle, as it is the most accurate rifle that I own. It's also my favorite cartridge ever. It will almost do everything a 7 mm Rem Mag will do (50 fps slower), but with a LOT less powder, and a LOT less recoil. This thing kicks like a 243 win. Any who, my new custom 7 SAUM is almost finished, and it doesn't make sense to keep two of the same calibers. Plus I want some cash to put a new Nightforce NX8 or NXS or ATACR on the new 7 SAUM. This rifle started as a Savage 308 Model 10 Short action (Center feed with removable bottom mag, and top bolt release). The barrel was removed, and a X-Caliber 25", 1:9 Twist, Varmint Counter, 7 SAUM chambered, Cryogenic Frozen barrel was installed. I then purchased a HS-Precision PSV118 Stock, that was installed. The factory accutrigger has been modified to 1.5-2 lbs (can't remember exactly, but I can measure it). The trigger is amazing. Lite enough to be super accurate, but not lite enough to be scary for hunting. I also had a tactical bolt handle put on the rifle, as well as an EGW picatinny rail. The rifle includes the picatinny rail, bipod, and sling. NO SCOPE, RINGS, OR BUBBLE LEVEL INCLUDED. I have $460 in the stock, $500+ in the barrel, $350 in the Action, $100 in the trigger, $40 in the EGW picatinny rail, $45 in the bolt handle and knob, $75 in the bipod, and $30 in the sling. So almost $1600 in this rifle, excluding any labor. I will also include the load recipe I have worked up for this rifle, plus 20 rounds already loaded, so you can see what this rifle can do. This rifle can and will shoot .5 moa. I will give a 1 moa guarantee to whomever buys it, or I will buy it back. It currently shoots the 162 ELDX extremely well. I've put 20 round groups at or under an inch, at 200 yards, on multiple occasions. I have 155 documented rounds through this rifle. The loads are on the mild side, so this barrel has a LOT of life left in it. The only down side for me, is that it is a little on the heavy side. If I recall it weighs in around 9.5 lbs without the optic. I will make someone a great deal at $ 750 bucks FIRM. I don't need to sell, just trying to get into a new Nightforce ATACR a little quicker. Only trades considered would be towards a Nightforce NXS or ATACR, and it must be in mils (with cash on my end obviously). Shoot me a text or call me at 435-668-9597. Pics are included of the rifle, and the very first 20 shot group ever taken at 200 yards (when zeroing the rifle). I bore sighted the rifle, and the VERY FIRST SHOT was 2" high. I dialed the scope down, and put the other 19 in the hole you see below it. Thanks for looking. Located in Show Low, AZ.

  17. Well guys, I'm back from my first coues hunt with my buddy. What a trip, and what an experience. We started off the trip leaving northern AZ around 3 am on the 3rd. Climbing the hill into Flag we started to smell antifreeze. Uggg, this is how this hunt is going to start out. Lol. We pull over and find a small coolant hose that had a pin hole leak in it. We sat in front of napa waiting for them to open to get some hose, and get back on the road. So we finally get on the road again and finish the 8.5 hour trip to Patagonia, Az. We get to camp finally (luckily one of our friends let us stay on his small piece of property for the hunt, which gave us running water, and power for the hunt), and got everything set up. We had a few beers, and did some looking at the map to get familiar with the unit that night, and got our packs ready for the next morning. We woke up early, drove to a spot of interest, parked, and made the hike into our first glassing spot. As the sun comes up, we start glassing. As the sun gets higher and higher, we notice we're not the only ones hunting this canyon. In fact there are 4 other people hunting this same spot. Crap. They didn't seem to care we were there so we continued on. We ended up glassing 8 does, and not one buck. That evening we went to a new spot to glass some more. Only to find that the new spot had more hunters in it than the first spot. Crap. But once again we stuck it out, and glassed up 11 does, and a spike! We let him go, and concluded our first day of the hunt. Over the next 4 days, we found a lot of the same except we finally made it away from the crowd. We saw probably 125 does over the course of the hunt, 4 spikes, one 1x2, one 2x2, and one small 3x3 in total. With only 2 days left in the hunt, I decided that my goal of shooting a big mature coues buck wasn't going to happen, and that I was going to take the next buck I saw, so that I could at least say I was successful on my first coues hunt. The next morning I had my buddy drop me off at 4:30 am, and I made the hour and a half hike to the top of a hill I could glass 4 different canyons from at the same spot. I had my breakfast and redbull in the dark as I waited for the sun to come up. As soon as the sun came up I was already finding deer, but once again no bucks. After over an hour, 3 new deer came walking into the canyon to my left. I put my glass on them, and I see doe, another doe, and a spike! Lol. I watch them and I struggle with the choice of taking this buck. But after watching him for 30 minutes, I decide to take the shot. I range the deer, and it shows 585 yards! I put in my dope into my ballistics program, and adjust my scope for 585 yards, and a 10 mile an hour cross wind. I try and get as comfortable as I can on my shooting sticks, and take a deep breath. I start to squeeze the trigger, and pow......... smack! The buck dropped in his tracks dead as a door nail. I hit him right in the chest right behind the shoulder. Officially the smallest deer I've ever shot. Lol. Took the shot from the top of here. My buddy helping me out (he was over in the next canyon). The next day walking into a new canyon, this little guy ran out in front of us, and stood there. My buddy couldn't pass him up, so he shot him with his 6.5 grendel at a whopping 50 yards. Lol. So after it was all said and done, we didn't get our trophy coues bucks. But we did learn a lot about hunting coues, and we did fill our tags. We had a great trip, and plan on coming back to hunt the grey ghost again! What a blast it was getting to hunt these little guys. I know some of you might get mad that we took immature bucks, and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But this was a long trip for us, and we hunted hard. We weren't part of the road hunting crew, and we put many miles on our boots, cactus and fox tails in out legs and feet, and bruises on our asses sliding down hills in the dark. For a completely brand new unit, and our first coues hunt, I'm pretty proud of us honestly. But we will be back again, you can count on that.

I just sent the link to my uncle. He's looking for one like that.

    6.5-300

Isn't the barrel life really really short with these? I've read as few as 600 rounds. I'd burn a barrel up in no time. 40-50 rounds for barrel break in, and 50+ finding the best load. Ouch.

    338 Lapua for Sale

Is that a HS Precision Stock? What kind of groups is this rifle capable of? Pics of groups? How much does it weigh? I've always wanted one of these. Very very tempting. More info would help. Thanks.

    Too Hot

That's not a HOT load. That's a STUPID load. Going to kill yourself, or someone else doing sh!t like that. Always start low and work up. Consider yourself lucky. That could have been really really bad.

Is the barrel threaded and chambered already, or is it a blank?

Day 4 Stink Pig /1st Ever

Day one of the hunt started with me shoveling snow all day trying to dig my camper out of the yard. Ugg. Day two I finally got out and spent the day humping hills, and glassing with no luck. Day three I spent humping hills, and glassing some more. At the end of the day I finally spotted 2 pigs about 629 yards away. I couldn't get setup for a comfortable shot, so I let them walk. Day four I went back to the same spot I had seen the pigs the day before. After 3 hours of nothing, I got up and moved a ridge deeper into the unit. I sat down and heard a pig squealing over the NEXT ridge. I packed up, and moved to the next ridge. I started glassing, and couldn't find the pigs making the noise. But I did spot a big Male bobcat. I moved in closer for a shot, and spotted the pigs. They were all huddled up under a tree. I setup for a shot, and my 7 saum found its mark at 309 yards. I tried to get on the cat after the pig, but I was too slow. I went over to where the cat was sitting, and found a baby javelina dead. The cat had bit his throat and killed it. All in all it was a great hunt. I probably should have shot the bobcat first, but I've killed plenty of Bobcats, and I really wanted to get a pig under my belt. I capped it, and it's off to the taxidermist.

Plan on doing a shoulder mount. I wasn't sure how much skin he would need. So I just capped the whole thing. Lol.
