    archery elk this weekend

Good luck. I've thought about putting in for one of these types of hunts, but have never done it. Pretty excited to hear how it goes. Keep us updated.

Best time to hunt the burns?

Elk love the burns. But they don't stick around for too long though once hunting season start. After the hunting pressure begins they tend to leave, or at least stay out during the days. The burn has to be a few years old too. Grass and other plants have to grow in the burned area to attract them to a good food source. Here's a small bull I called in a couple of years ago in a burn. It's a horrible picture, but you can make out his body.

    Early Archery Bull

You guys all do me a favor, and leave the big ones for the late rifle bull hunts this year.

    Shed find.

I wish I could take credit for the bull. But it was my friend that shot it. I did call it in for him opening morning though, which was fun. In this picture he did let me hold the elk though. Oh and he was very generous in letting me help him pack it out. But I did score a sweet set of sheds and some elk meat. Haha.

    Shed find.

It was quartered away from him. It entered his last rib, went through a lung, arteries, and almost came out of its neck. The broadhead actually cut it's jugular, a few other arteries that come off the heart, and the blood was spraying out of the arrow entrance. This bull went less than 20 yards.

    Shed find.

Last year on my buddies archery bull hunt, he killed a nice 6x6 opening morning. After we got him quartered, in packs, and we were heading out, I chose a different route back to the truck than my buddy. I found these within 50 yards of each other, less than 100 yards from where he killed his bull. It made my trip out a lot heavier, but worth it. When we got to the truck, we held them up to his bull, and they were pretty much and exact match. Sorry not a very good picture. His bull.

    Throat Length Question

Good information here. It's worth spending the money on a hornady bullet comparator set, and a hornady lock n load oal gauge (straight for a bolt gun or the auto version for an AR). This way you can measure the Cartridge base to ogive length, and determine the exact seating distance for a particular bullet to the lands. Especially if you plan on loading rounds near the lands. If not you can very easily load one too long, and jam it into the lands. If you're working with hot loads, this can equal a very dangerous situation. I know, because I've done it. Even with these tools I made the mistake of not measuring every round as I seated my bullets. On one particular lot of bullets I got for my 7mm, I measured the first few rounds I loaded, and then proceeded to load 50 rounds. Unfortunately a few of the bullets in the box I got measured .010-.015" longer at the ogive than the rest. I load my rounds .001" off the lands. Needless to say, I jammed one before I learned my lesson. It blew the primer out of the case, and collapsed my ejector spring. Luckily this was the only harm done. But it could have been very bad. Since this experience I measure every single round after I seat the bullet. It's more time consuming, but much safer. CBTO length seated to lands. [/url Round loaded too long, due to bullet being slightly longer at the ogive. ]

    Grave Digger Broadheads

If you're looking for an alternate broadhead, you may consider the ram cat 125gr broadhead. They're an amazing broadhead, and they fly awesome (just like field tips). I've done a lot of testing with a lot of different broadheads, and I chose the ram cat for my deer hunt. I shot a buck facing straight at me opening morning last year. The arrow went through his sternum, through his heart, through his guts, through his femur, and stuck in the ground 20 yards behind him. The broadhead was perfect, and still very sharp. I'm only pulling 60 lbs due to bad shoulders. We had a buddy in camp that didn't understand broadhead tuning and missed a few deer. Since I was done with my hunt, I gave him some broadheads to use. He ended up sticking his buck at 82 yards without having to tune or adjust his bow. My other buddy was so impressed with them, he switched himself and his wife over to them before their archery elk hunt. Opening morning he took a nice 300" 6x6 at 50 yards with the ram cat, and it went less than 20 yards. Near the end of the hunt his wife shot a spike with one at 55 yards, and it went through both shoulder blades, and two ribs. She's only pulling 42lbs too. None of the broadheads deformed or lost blades. If I didn't believe in them, and use them myself, I wouldn't recommend them. Just a thought.

    Leftover deer tags

I understand completely. I just didn't realize that 35B had leftovers usually. He's the one that wanted 35B as the 5th choice. So I guess I shouldn't feel bad for him. Lol. And you are correct, we are going to spend as much if not more effort on this hunt. I've never taken a coues deer before, so it will be an awesome opportunity for me. He's actually hunted 35B twice now, and has taken a decent buck from the unit. We're both excited, and have vacation put in for the whole hunt. I'm looking forward to this hunt! My wife is not though. I've already got a very expensive list of goodies I want to buy for the hunt now. Hehe.

    Leftover deer tags

I feel bad for my buddy. He had 5 points, and I only had 2. We put in for the Kaibab hunts for our 1st-4th picks, and decided to put 35B in as the 5th choice. We ended up drawing it obviously (there were 101 leftovers), and blew all of his points. But on the up side we're still going hunting.

    New Coues rifle completed

Good looking rifle. The 6.5 Grendel is what my buddy uses. He's got pretty close to the same rifle as you, and it's one accurate rifle. Congrats.

    Unit 7

Quality advice right here ^^ They need to cut back on the deer tags by 50% in 7. There are too many people in the unit, and the deer population seems to have dropped a lot. It's a joke if you hunt the popular areas. Another bad thing about the areas near the peaks are the hippies. I drew a unit 7 tag 5 or 6 years ago. There were hippies driving around honking their horns, blowing whistles, and all kinds of racket trying to spook the deer. I ended up calling G&F and they were no help. I ended up taking a small 3x3, and the hippies wouldn't leave me alone in camp. They kept coming by and screaming at me and my family. It was a horrible experience. I ended up telling them that they scared the deer right to me with all the noise they made (which wasn't true), and they left with their heads down. Lol. The funniest part was that we were skinning the buck at camp, and one of the girls kept acting like she was going to vomit. Hahaha. But don't let my story discourage you. If you get away from everyone, there are actually some toads hiding out there. I've come across a few monsters while archery elk hunting 7. Good luck on your hunt.

    35B

Congrats on the tag, I'm sure you will get hooked on Coues just like the rest of us. Check out the free Game Planner Map Viewer If you need to look at some maps of your unit. Just Register with a valid email and your good to go. I'm always available if you have questions or wanna talk maps. Good luck in 35B, I'm sure you'll get some good advice from the guys on here. Ed Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to check it out.

    Unit 22 - need help!

My first bull hunt was in 22N. It's a beautiful unit, but the terrain can be tough. While scouting we found a group of guys on a youth cow hunt (Grandfather, son, and grandson). We helped them find a cow, helped them quarter it, and then we were lucky enough to help pack it out (uggggg ). When our hunt came, I killed a small 4x4 opening morning (first 10 minutes of light), and didn't have it packed out until late that afternoon. I was exhausted, scratched, scraped, sore, and ready for bed. The very next morning my buddy killed a decent 6x6, and we did it all over again (he shot his bull within 3/4 of a mile from mine). I've probably put 100-110 miles on my boots in 22N. Miles on your boots, and time glassing is the only way your going to give yourself a chance. But don't go scouting too soon. There is a resident elk herd there, but a lot of elk migrate in for those late hunts. It's hard to scout them before they're there. My bull. My buddies bull. Cow we helped with Get ready for a lot of this kind of terrain. Shooting one here is one thing. Getting them out is another. This is not a road hunt kind of unit (or at least not where we hunted). I've since changed units (after one hunt in 22N). Packing out 3 elk with a combined 15+ miles, through the thickest stuff I've ever been in, and part of it straight up hill was enough for me. Lol. I don't mind packing them out, but these hills were brutal. And it's thicker than crap in a lot of areas. There are a lot of elk there though, I will give that to the unit.

    35B

Thanks for the welcome and the tips! I'll make sure to do as you said. I'm very good about photographing my hunts and sharing them. Hopefully I'll have some good photos to share when It's all done. I've taken a lot of deer with my 243. I feel it will be a good fit for coues deer. I like it because it's light, and I can shoot it very accurately out to 600 yards. I am putting a new EGW Picatinny Rail, Vortex Precision Match Rings, and a Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44 Scope on the rifle within a month though. I'd like to have a little bit more magnification on the scope. Plus I already have that scope for my 7mm and I'm very familiar with it. The old scope will be going on an AR-15 build I'm working on currently. Here is a pic of my rifle as it sits now.

    Coues Gunz!

This will be my first coues hunt ever. I drew a 35B early November tag. I'm going to be taking my trusty old 243 Win. Details are in my sig. In the next month though, I plan on putting a new EGW Picatinny Rail, Vortex Precision Match Rings, and a Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44 rifle scope on my rifle. My old scope will be going on a new AR-15 build I'm working on. Here's a pic of it as it is.

    AZGFD Ammunition Testing Event Today

Pretty interesting test. Call me old school, but I'm still not a believer in the solid copper bullets. 2 years ago my father and brother both had 12a West tags, and received their free boxes of ammo from G&F. They sighted their guns in with the ammo, and everything looked great (little bro had a 243 win, and dad had his old trusty 30-06). During the hunt my brother shot a decent buck at 75 yards, and it just pin holed the deer and it did not die. We found no blood no nothing. We hunted that deer hard for 2 more days, and jumped it up about a mile from where he shot it. It was wounded, but definitely not dead. This time my brother was able to get another shot, but with a lead core bullet, and it dropped in its tracks. When we cleaned the buck we found a perfect pin hole straight through the buck right above the heart. It had missed all the main arteries, nicked both lungs and had done very minimal damage. The good old fashion lead bullet absolutely destroyed both lungs. On the last day of the hunt my father shot a small buck with the solid copper bullets, and it dropped rolled over got up and ran off. Just before dark we found it bedded. When it stood up my dad shot it right through the heart and it ran 200-250 yards. When we cleaned it, it had a perfect pin hole through both lungs, and a pin hole right through the heart. If he wouldn't have hit it in the heart, I don't think we would have ever found that deer. Since that hunt, I've been scared of ever trying the solid copper bullet ever again. My personal favorite bullet is the Berger VLD. They kill with authority, and drop them in their tracks. Until they can come up with a newer design for the solid copper bullets, I won't be shooting them. My two cents.

    35B

I'm new to the site and to Coues hunting, and I too have drawn the 35B early November Hunt. I just found this site, and I'm pretty excited to learn more about Coues hunting. Good luck to both of you on your hunts. I'm going to need all the luck I can get I'm sure. Haha.
