It seems like coues deer are spreading out & showing up a lot of places they've not traditionally been.

Any Sign of Rut Activity for Archery Hunt in Southern Az?
mattys281 replied to azbullelkman's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
You catch the other thread about the ice cream? I guess there was a superstar mule deer that had numerous pictures eating ice cream cones out of peoples hands. That thread got locked. Seen it a thousand times. Deer get famous and before you know it there hooked on Ben and jerry's. Then when they can't handle the pressure of fame they jump in front of a speeding Toyota pick up truck to end it all. So very sad. That deer did go down in an ice cream fueled blaze of glory that could’ve rivaled Charlie sheen. “I’m winning baby!” -
Outstanding ram! Congrats to your brother. Dream hunt for me, hope I get to go someday

It doesn't hurt to throw an extra pair in your backpack. I prefer to use socks made by SmartWool, pricey but they will last for years especially if you don't put them in the dryer and even if wet they will keep your feet warm. If they do get wet you can take them off and hand wring them out and get about 80% of the water out and they retain their loft. Wool is the best stuff on the planet. I’ve used a couple different types of fancy pants big name base layer and now that stuff stays in the closet and I go out in merino wool.

What do you bear guys think about these two?

Wow! What a beast! -
Finally got out to check a couple of cameras that have been out since spring. Had a couple nice bears show up. At least I think they're pretty nice, but I'm not real into bears and certainly not a good field judge of them. For size comparison, here's a coues buck from the same camera. Here's another bear from a mile or so up the ridge. Doesn't look like the same one to me, but I guess it's possible.

Like where your heads at, love the enthusiasm! Now if only I knew someone with pack mules to help drag him out... -

the numbers he threw out were pretty much spot on with what my hunting partner & I were thinking, but as stated, I don't know bears that well so wasn't sure. Regardless, they're good looking animals. I wish they'd show up a little more often. This once every 6 months crap is ridiculous! -

I got a lot of deer pics off that same camera. That bear on the bottom is easily 4 or 5x the body mass of a full grown coues doe. Not sure how much that is, aren’t the adult does typically 70# or so I think. I’ve gotten a couple good looking bears on cam over the years in that area but I’m pretty sure he is the biggest so far -

I don't think its the same. Muzzle looks a lot more brown in the bottom pic. I know there's a few of them out there, but I don't see them often enough to be familiar with them. -
Congrats to him! Way to get it done.... even with training wheels.

+1. When I first started that game I was always going in ridiculously heavy. Now I can run a 5 day hunt out of a 40# pack. If the weather looks crappy and i throw a tent into the mix might be closer to 45#, but I do everything I can to keep it at or under 40.

The fiercer the battle, the sweeter the victory. Congrats to you gentlemen, sounds like an awesome hunt! My 16 yo daughter usually packs in with my hunting partner and I every January. Love taking the kids on those kind of trips. Great memories!

Congrats he’s a nice one. Good shooting!

Helluva rack your wife’s got on her kev.

I frankly can’t see how it’s morally/ethically different than paying for a guide or buying scouting info from somebody. In both scenarios you’re trading money for help finding animals. It’s the same assault on the guiding industry that we’re seeing with Uber vs. taxi cabs or amazon delivery drones vs. ups drivers. Technology and innovation will take a jab at every single one of us eventually.

Sounds like an amazing hunt and a grreat write-up, thanks for sharing. Congrats! Trophy of a lifetime right there!

There we go. He's a biggin!

I tried a blow-up one a few years ago. Scared away 3 deer in one weekend. It went back to cabelas after that. I've thought about giving it a second try, just putting the deer in a bedded position instead of standing, but haven't gotten around to it yet. A stationary deer that doesn't move it's head, tail or ears seems to be alarming to them in my very limited experience. Note though mine was scaring away coues deer, no idea how a muley will respond.

That’s really cool. Hope he stays locally and she gets to continue the new friendship. It’s nice having property pets. We just bought a place up in Prescott and have a couple of neighborhood herds living in people’s yards. It’s pretty awesome seeing mule deer every time you leave your house. Our neighborhood bucks aren’t like that though ours are a couple spikes and a forky. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, what an incredible year! Nice work & congrats too all! -
calm it down bud, Im tryin to be serious with this thing. Lol, you can have them after they learn to shoot! Don't his odds of catching one go down after they learn to shoot?
-
Maybe they could also outlaw boots and trekking poles.Or maybe just lemp rested sissies... Can you imagine the game & fish guys assessing people in the field: "Ok sir, let me see your hunting license & your tag. Okay that looks good.... just one more thing. I need you to hold this martini glass for a second..... "

You take the fun out of everything!

January Coues Rut Predictions Central AZ
mattys281 replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
My prediction is I will kill one second week of January. Likely won’t be large, but I predict it’ll taste dang good anyway
