    Poll - Scent Loc

It's funny, I can remember when I first started reading bowhunter magazine, there was always pics of Chuck Adams in blue jeans & flannel shirts (red & black or green & black). He stated numerous times that clothing only needed to break up the human outline, but that all changed with a Realtree endorsment. Guess if someone was willing to give me a check & free camos, I might take it too.

    Whats the Weirdest?

Saw a white deer once, but not an albino, as it's rump was a little darker in color than the rest of it. Maybe it was an albino & just didn't wipe thoroughly? Who knows. Also found a porcupine out in coyote springs which isn't remarkable, except that it was about 8 ft. high in a juniper tree. I had no idea those dang things climbed. We thought it was a coon when we first found it.

No sweat. Where do you sell your pelts anyway? Anybody by coon skins anymore?

    Upcoming Bear hunt Unit-1

Wish I'd have know that in Aug. I walked right past one at less than 30 yards & paid him no mind. On my way to my treestand. Are fox pelts worth anything? I've seen a few of those over in 27 too. Well a August bobcat would not have been legal I believe the season opened in Sept. We always wait a little till Oct. then you still will have a lower grade pelt. Fox last year were around the 30-45 dollar range. So letting the Bobcat walk by was a good thing! AzTrapper The regs say it opened Aug 1. We would have been legal.

The problem I have with that is that I honestly can't remember the last place I was at that had a steady breeze. The last two years I've been carrying a powder bottle & constantly checking the wind, only to find out that it always seems to be moving in a different direction than it was a few minutes ago. The way I look at it is you'll never be able to either completely eliminate you scent or completely predict the wind, so I try to minimize the bacteria growth as much as possible with daily bathing (good idea in general - not just for hunting ), clean clothes that cover everything except my head (long sleeves & gloves), bacteria killing scent spray, & of course playing the wind as much as possible. I'm currently reading up on search dog training & the book I've been reading has a great explanation on how scent is distributed & hence how the dogs find it. For example, the bacteria you mention clings to the dead skin cells that are constantly being shed off of us in little clumps called rafts. The average human sheds over 40,000 rafts carrying their scent per minute. Hence the long sleeves & gloves mentioned earlier, to impede the distribution of them. Also, ideal conditions for bacteria to grow are warm & wet, so I try to move slove & rest often to keep from perspiring. As for the carbon clothing - gimmick. And a good one. They took alot of people's money.

Didn't these guys know that if they'd have simply taken a few minutes to bathe they wouldn't have needed all that snake oil & voo-doo anyway? Man, people will buy anything.

A Real Tough Way to Start a Tough Hunt.

Prescott, Az. The honorable Judge Mackey. He seemed to choose his wording very carefully. I think he knew he was on touchy ground & felt his hands were tied.
  13. Everyone jokes about their own bad luck. Mine is real, however, at least as far as bowhunting is concerned, and I have proof. Case 1: Jan. '07, archery Javelina & Coues deer combo. I'd scouted my butt of for & hunted the same area through Dec. '06 to get ready for this one & even took a week off work & swapped one of my visitation weekends with my kids so that I could have 9 days straight to put into it. What happens? The day before I leave I get a call from the piece of (censored) that my ex was having an affair with (hence the divorce & visitation weekends) & he, now also being an "ex", informed me that the new boyfriend she has, who's living in the house with my kids, is a convicted sex offender from California! Obviously my hunt plans underwent a sudden change, as I spent the next 3 days talking to lawyers, police detectives (from both Phoenix & Sacramento, where he came from), and filing papers with courts & waiting for an emergency hearing. Incidentely, I lost my petition for an emergency change of custody, as his crime was not against a minor and he didn't have any outstanding warrants (in this state at least, he had two in Ca.) that might lead to the police storming the house, so he did not necessarily pose an immediate threat to my children. I lost a couple more days to crappy weather and ended up only hunting I think 3 out of my 9 days. I was pretty unmotivated & found it difficult to buckle down & focus, but did manage to arrow a javi. Case 2: Sept. '07, archery elk. Again, the night before I'm supposed to depart for my 10 day hunt, a near tragedy strikes. While on her way to Flagstaff from her office in Lake Montezuma, my girlfriend comes up on a couple of semi's pulling up the hill. One is driving erratic & swerving, so she goes to pass him. While passing, he swerves over into her lane, she swerves to avoid him, hits the dirt on the shoulder, loses control & rolls the car. You can see the result from the pictures below. First and foremost, she's okay. Banged up & sore, but nothing broken & no internal damage, thank God. I cut my hands at least 6 different places while cleaning out the car at the impound yard, yet she managed to escape the thing w/out a scratch from all of that exploding glass. As for the driver who ran her off the road, both he (or she) & the semi that was behind her at that point took off. Neither stopped. She was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center by ambulance & I drove up as soon as I found out. Anyhow, here's the part I need help with. Her business partner was a few minutes ahead of her on the I-17 & did not see the accident, but she did see the same truck swerving in & out of it's lane. The description that they gave of the truck is that it (the trailer at least) was white and had the company name written on it in green cursive style writing. They said that it was two words & the first began with an "L". Does anyone have any idea what that company name might be? I've tried googling for trucking companies, but haven't found a match yet. I figure that if we can get the company name, we might be able to trace down the drivers. Since they didn't actually make contact, our legal council says it's classified as a "miss & run" accident, & it's still illegal for them to flee the scene of an accident. Besides, there's no way in heck the truck behind her didn't see what happened, & she's cofident that the one that swerved over on her also saw it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys.

    Condors vs NRA

It seems to me that everyone has known for decades now about the ill effects of lead on people & other animals (no lead-based paint, recent toy recalls, etc.), so why the heck does it take a few birds getting sick before people start to realize that maybe pumping the soil & subsequently our ground water, full of lead is a bad idea? Larks right, this problem was identified along time ago & should have been handled by now.

A Real Tough Way to Start a Tough Hunt.

I really appreciate everyone keeping their eyes open. We talked about it last night & Ingrid (my GF) said that it was dark, the lettering could have been blue or black, but she's pretty sure it was green. I know the description is pretty vague. It just pisses me off that they didn't even stop. Her car came to rest on its lid & she was unconscious hanging upside down in there. What a couple of class acts there. Since they didn't actually make contact, it's going to be her word against theirs, but I'd at least like the opportunity to speak with their employers. I figure that w/ log books & all their records, if we can i.d. the company, it shouldn't be too difficult to reach the a-holes behind the wheel. Thanks for the list Tony. Only a few had website links & I didn't see any photos of their trucks that looked like a match, but I'm going to have her & her business partner go through them & see if any of the names look right. I did get to hunt for 5 days. A friend of hers volunteered to stay w/ her for a few days so I could go for at least part of my trip. The hunting was hard. First it was hot, then rainy, then windy.... Opening weekend there were hunters camped on every road & there was a lot of activity. The bulls clammed up. I had a nice 6x6 come into a wallow I was sitting on my second day, but as I had a cow tag it didn't do me much good. Still nice to look at though. On the forth day I woke to heavy fog & 3 bulls screaming in the drainage right behind my tent. I got up & got dressed (it was already daylight - I over slept) & then hauled but down there. I stopped at the top & cow called which brough an immediate response from a bull below me. Sounded like he was way down in the bottom, so I went in pretty quick. Ended up getting busted by my own impatience & inexperience. They were a lot closer than I'd thought & once I got to within about 30 yards that bull's cows hauled butt outta there. He stuck around long enough to scream at me & then followed them. I didn't get much action, but it was real exciting when I did get in on something. Hopefully things go smoother next year.
  18. Is it just me, or does that grassy knoll behind them seem like a great place for a .308 that has a 10x leupold on it? I'm pretty sure those packs aren't loaded with undies & tomalies....

  22. Check out this article: http://green.yahoo.com/index.php?q=node/1570 Saw a tv program on this same thing a couple months ago, except that the guy they were interviewing was already build stuff that ran on water. Wonder how many years it'll take for this to trickle down to the consumers so we can finally quit getting raped at the pump.

    The Good 'Ol Days

Good stuff, Tony. Thanks for sharing. This thread is about the "old times", but doesn't have to be limited to the old-timers (no offense intended to anyone). Some of you guys may have old photos of your dads or grand-dads. LET'S SEE 'EM! I seem to recall one of a bull elk being roped?

    You saw it here first

There's some nice bucks around there, that much is certain. Unfortunately, I was unable to figure them out. The ethics police who scrutinize baiting have a very strong counter arguement against them after my efforts. In 3 months & over 2000 photos, that buck w/ the kickers only showed up for one day. The 4x4 never touched the stuff, that photo was taken as he walked right past it. I tried 3 or 4 different types of baits (or attractants if you prefer) & could not get any repeat business except for does. Baiting might work better in the lower elevations where deer have to work harder for a living, but up there it did not prove very effective for us at all. I think this is because the habitat is so good, that there isn't any real deficiency in their diets which would prompt them to go out of their way for a supplied supplement. As you can see by the antler mass, sag bellies, & over-all good condition of these guys, the animals you find over there are pretty hearty, to say the least. Better luck next year. As to the cats, I've got a couple bobcats on photo & a few foxes too. Last Sept. my GF saw one (a bobcat) snag a squirrel & then it sat right under her treestand & ate it's "breakfast". I asked her why the heck she didn't shoot it, & she said she didn't know she was allowed to. She has since been corrected. Trail cams are an excellent hobby all of their own. I started w/ a couple cheapies that I bought used off of Treestandman & quickly became addicted. I've got 4 that I'm running right now & plan on adding a couple more to dispense in certain wilderness areas that I'm interested in.

No thanks are necessary there. I love seeing the pictures from way back when. I truly think life was a lot better when it was simpler.... No cell phones, people worked for a living instead of living to work, husbands supported their wives & wives took care of their kids instead of leaving them in day care so they could work second jobs & afford Escalades. Families not only did things together, but most of the time actually stayed together. I'd like to see you guys start a "Wonder Years" thread & bombard us with your memories from the 60s & 70s or whenever.
