Today was to be the last day for me, as I'm leaving on vacation next week & will miss the last weekend of season. To make a long story short, I humped in about 1 1/2 hours into the fringe country around the Superstition Wilderness area this morning w/ the intention of settin up my decoy, dispersing some scents & try to lure a coues buck w/ some blow-up doll action.... but as luck would have it, just when I reached my spot, I spotted a deer staring at me from up the hill. I tried to call him closer, but he was having none of it... According to Nikon, the distance was 78.5 yards, a little outside of my normal shooting range, but I practice out to 80 so I decided to take it. It worked! My first coues deer down.

I've been sooooo busy over the last few month that I neglected to get my app in for the javelina draw & next thing I knew January was here & I hadn't bought a left-over tag either! So, of course, I've been cursed to run into javi's everywhere I go this January! Couldn't stick him, so I set my bow down & dug out the camera instead. Always a great experience getting close. He came in under 10 yards & I actually was able to call him back again, but my memory chip was full by that time!

Wow, what an awesome shot! Way to go Jacob!!!

Let's see your archery succes in the desert.
mattys281 replied to desertbowhunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
In chronological order.... Jan 1997 very first bowkill: Jan 2007: Jan 2008: Jan 2009: Seems like the desert & I get along pretty well in January...... -
If you're not dedicated to the proposition of shooting a brand new 400 fps monster that'll cost you a grand, I'd suggest checking e-bay, archery talk classifieds & craigs list. You can find many, many 1-2 year old bows for hundreds off of what they originally cost. As for brand new bows, the Diamond line from Bowtech is awesome & usually a couple hundred less than comparable bows from other manufacturers.

LMAO! You think your safe to catch a little cat-nap while your huntin buddy's on watch & what happens!? He documents the incident & posts it all over the internet!!! That'll learn me....

Ethics police can't read.... they were too busy criticizing the pronunciation of those who can read to actually learn for themselves.

Thanks everyone. 2 down, 4 to go on the deer slam! I've been dropping in to check what you nuts are posting about from time to time, but I've been so busy the last 6 months, I've barely had time to scratch my watch or wind my butt! I rarely even post on my own forum these days.... too busy for my own good. Catch ya later. Matt S.

The hunts are over
mattys281 replied to rimhunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I've got 3 trips over seas planned already & am planning on doing some serious trail-camming this year. Hopefully I'll draw an elk tag too, just cuz I want to make sure I don't get bored.... -
That's an awesome buck! Bet it was a rush, I don't think I've ever even seen one that big through binos before. Congrats! Matt S.

It was a neck shot & the arrow passed through. The buck flopped over in his tracks & allowed me to walk up to 20 yards & put two more in him. I can't say that I'd take that same shot again, but as it was my last day & I don't think me schedule is going to allow for an August hunt this year, I decided to make the most of the opportunity I had in front of me. I'm very thankful he didn't go far, as it was it took me almost three hours to get him back to my car. That's one of the really nice things about coues deer.... they fit neatly in a backpack w/out even having to cut them up. Got him & all my gear out in one load. Weighed the pack at home & it was just under 80 lbs. My legs would have swore it was closer to 120.....

Awful early for this guy to be busted up already. Talk about your crap luck! We continue to have bear pics every time we check our cameras.... They never touch the salt, but it appears that this meadow is along a popular travel route. Not having much luck finding muley sportin bone, but have seen this little guy a couple times over the last few weeks.

I think that's a problem everyone on here would like to have! 10 days & counting.

His bones do look kinda jacked up. You're probably right.

Archery Bunny
mattys281 replied to KidBowHunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Congrats Troy! I still get a rush out of whackin bunnies w/ my bow. It's just as exciting stalking them now as it was on my first one. Keep it up kiddo! Matt S. -
heck yeah! Doug said you'll be over there. I'll pm our campsite location when we firm up our plans.

I called them a few months ago to get more info. The guy I spoke to said the hogs are on a 300 acre area w/ a canyon in it and you have to go w/ a guide. I chose to go to Ca instead because it sounded to much like fish in a barrel for my taste.

This is exactly right. The area I hunt in the early season is so overgrown that you can't get away from the trees, so I just make sure I'm not hanging my stand in the tallest one . I've sat right in my stand through every monsoon that's hit while I was hunting for the last two years and haven't been fried yet. This may be the year for it, but I kind of doubt it.

Cowards Caught on Camera!
mattys281 replied to cramerhunts's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I posted your pics & a link to this thread on www.huntingbrotherhood.com. Here's the link if you care to see. Glad you got those pics of them at least. I don't think that broad in yellow humped 3 miles in the last year, let alone each way to reach your camera. Obviously someone who has access to that private ground you mentioned. Give 'em heck buddy! Matt S. http://www.huntingbrotherhood.com/showthre...27980#post27980 -
I only ever heard them make that noise one time. I was actually parked on top of a hill in Lynx Estates, between PV & Prescott, trying like heck to get the girl I was with to "come into heat" (I was in high-school what do you expect!) when this cat started making that squaking sound. I thought it was a bird or something, but she actually i.d.ed it as a lion, said her & her family had just been at the local zoo up there & heard the lion over there making that same noise. It sounded like it was getting closer, so I flicked on the head lights of my truck & sure enough, a lion popped out of the brush right across the road from us. Trotted about 50 yards down the road & darted off into someones yard. I hope that cat had better luck finding a ready partner that night then I did. Here's a pic we caught on trail cam a couple weeks ago: & another from June:

Bear-Doe- and Flock - o' turkeys
mattys281 replied to AZP&Y's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I count 9 turkeys & I wouldn't have shot that bear in that pic either. His facing right at ya, wait til he turns sideways then put one in the pump-house. Skinny or not, I'd turn him into a pin cushion. Matt S. -
Sad but true. It's their retaliation against you for hunting 'their spot'.
