  1. Hi everyone. www.huntingbrotherhood.com is putting on it's 3rd annual multi-forum hunting contest. In brief the format is 5 person teams, the dates run from 9/1/10-1/31/11, it is open to all legal weapons. Primarily it is designed as a deer/elk contest, but points are available for other species of game animals as well. Each team member is allowed to enter 2 bucks/bulls (i.e. 2 buck, 1 buck & 1 bull, 2 bulls, etc.) that are scored at a base of 50 points + 10 points for each measurable point & each team member is allowed to enter 2 does/cows for 50 points each. There is a variety of other animals that can be substituted for the does/cows (worth 50 points), such as hogs, javelina, antelope, etc. Teams must be formed by the end of August to get in on it. The best part, the winning team gets to choose a disabled vet to send on a free hunt at the Laguna Vista Ranch in Texas. For full details on rules &/or to sign up, click the links below. This is the link to the contest rules: http://www.huntingbrotherhood.com/showthread.php?t=12794 This is the link to the sign up thread: http://www.huntingbrotherhood.com/showthread.php?t=12795 With the coues-killers & elk-slayers on this forum, I know you guys can put together a southwest team that'll give those eastern whitetail guys a run for their money in the points. Good luck & let the smack-talk begin!
  2. Need 8-12 guys to book a private hunt on the Tejon. I know some of you stick-flingers got skunked in the spring draw, so who's interested? The price is $388 per person ($375 for the hunt + $13 for liability insurance), + a CA pig tag ($66.15 for nonres) & a Ca hunt license ($143.35 for nonres or $41.20 for a nonres 2-day lic.). The dates I have in mind are 5/15-5/16 (Sat. & Sun.). Would need the fees for the ranch & the pig tags to be sent to the ranch by first week or so of April to reserve the spots. I will be driving out from the Phoenix area & can fit 6 others besides myself in my Commander & will pull a trailer for gear & to bring home hogs. If more want to go, we can look into renting a van or something. I don't have a lot of time to frequent forums these days, so if someone's interested, please contact me at mattys281@yahoo.com.

What do you wear on your feet for a stalk?

I usually move to w/in about 200 yards & then kick off the boots & throw on a pair of extra wool socks. I prefer the socks to the other products they sell, because they are much lighter in my pack, quieter than anything else I've seen & they force you to pay close attention to where you are stepping so as to avoid sharp rocks & stickers, thus making you move slower.

May 2010 Archery Hog Hunt at Tejon Ranch

I got a couple guys who say they're in for sure, but not close to 8 yet. I'll keep searchin for stickflingers til mid April or so, then if we don't have enough, we'll head over for the public hunt in June.

Spoke w/ the hunt coordinator yesterday & DB is right, you have to have the regular license ($143.35 for non-res.). Apparently the 2-day license is only valid for hunting birds & varmits, so you can't buy a pig tag with it in Ca. Sorry for the misinformation.

May 2010 Archery Hog Hunt at Tejon Ranch

I sent an email to the ranch this morning regarding the 2-day or full year license. Still have not heard from them, so I'm planning on calling them on Monday. Would have called today, but I've been out of my office almost all day.

May 2010 Archery Hog Hunt at Tejon Ranch

That was not mentioned to me yesterday, but I will send the hunt coordinator an email this morning & find out for certain. She DID say that you do have to send in the pig tags w/ the applications, so the WILL have to be bought early. Thanks for the correction DB. Also, I've received a couple emails asking about the terrain & type of hunting. It is unguided, spot & stalk. The terrain is hilly, grass, oaks & scrub brush. You can see pics at their website, just click on the link. http://www.hunttejon.com The ranch is 270,000 acres & the pigs are free to roam right off it. It is definetely not canned.
  8. Just listed these on Ebay, item # 130366385731, no reserve. If somebody local buys them, they can save on shipping & just pick them up. I live in Avondale & work in Tempe, so can meet the buyer anywhere in between. These binos are in great condition, no scratches or damage. Have always been kept in their case when not on my tripod & I'm including the adapter I bought for them with the binos, as they don't take the normal thread-in-the-front type tripod adapter.

    New Binos Which Ones?

In that case, I'm not familiar w/ the other brands discussed, but I've really liked the Monarch 12x's. They're light weigth & seem to be really high quality for their price, plus the warantee. i believe you can find a NIB set of them for your $400 mark.

for all kids on this forum

WOW! I never realized how many youngins there are on this forum. I think it's great that you young men & women choose to spend your time outside in the "real world" rather then vegging out in front of the tv or getting involved with the trouble that alot of other kids find themselves in. My 16 yo daughter has started bowhunting with my this year & she's already my favorite hunting partner. My youngest daughter turned 9 a couple days ago & has been all over me to get her a bb gun so we can go squirrel hunting together this summer. Can't wait for that. Keep it up youngsters & don't forget to invite some of your friends so that they can also learn how great the outdoors really are. Matt S. p.s. some one should start a thread of kid-hunter trophy pics.... hint, hint... lets see 'em!

    New Binos Which Ones?

I know these are out of your price range a little, but if you're looking for glass to sit on a tripod, I'd very, very strongly suggest saving a few extra dollars & getting the Minox 15x from Doug at Cameraland. I've bought many pairs in the price range you stated (Nikon Monarch 12x, Alpen 12x, & a set of Zeiss Conquest 12's that are way out of that range), but none of those are even close to the Minox binos & the new price of $550 is pretty much the greatest steal of a deal on the planet. They were originally selling for over $1000. Here's a link. That havig been said, the Nikon Monarch's were my next favorite pair & those were $440 for the 12x's. I liked the 12's so much that I bought another pair of 10x's to hang around my neck for $250 at Cabelas. I think the quality of the Monarchs is way out of their price range & they come w/ a 25 year no-fault warauntee. My glassing system now consists of Monarch 10's around my neck & the Minox 15x's & a spotter in the pack.

    Zeiss Conquest 12x45's For Sale

I can't speak to what any individual feels they're worth, I can only tell ya what I paid for them. If someone gets them for $350, I've lost about $600 on the deal at that point, so I don't consider that a bad starting price at all. The flip side of the coin is that I have about 4 other pairs of binos currently & haven't even taken these out of the case in months, so $350 in the pocket is better than a pair of binos in the closet.

    Obumma gets new title

Come now, you be nice to our fearless leader. He's only trying to save all those poor, oppressed & otherwise down trodden welfare recepients from us brutish, wealth-hording working class folks.... After all, anyone that earns enough to pay their mortgage on time & still have a little extra left over surely wouldn't mind sharing the surplus w/ less fortunate neighbors, would they?

    Rattling and decoys

You can't make a statement like that and not offer up some tips man!!! Give us some pointers or mistakes you have made - something. I'm planning on trying some ratlling/grunting in Sonora in Jan and I'd appreciate a head start p.s. PM's are fine No they're not. We're not asking for his spot, just for a tip or too to benefit other aspiring coues-callers. Come on Coues Archer, throw us a bone or two....

    Most animals with an arrow?

I've only killed five big animals so far, but all resulted in busted arrows. On small game, I've killed 3 or 4 rabbits w/ blunt tipped radial x-weaves before bustin them, but that's certainly not always the case.

    Rattling and decoys

My first deer I killed w/ my bow was a muley that I got w/in range of through a combination of calling & stalking. I slipped to w/in about 150 yards of him & his ladies, was losing light fast & didn't think I had time to finish the stalk, so I began to grunt call & thrash brush w/ my hand, while staying out of sight. He came towards me, angling up a hill to my left, so I also moved up the hill to intercept him, while stopping to grunt & thrash some more brush along the way. I ended up putting an arrow in him at 50 yards. Some of these other guys on here are certainly more experienced at it than I, so perhaps they've learned differently, but my experience has shown me that deer which are totally unaware of your presence are highly vulnerable to calling. However, a deer that has already been glancing in your direction & you think you're not quite busted yet, but they're suspicious... those deer usually just run away from me the minute I start calling. I've called in several though in the 150-200 yard range & they often will come in like they're on a fishing line.

    buying new bow imput please

I was a diehard PSE guy for years & was even a dealer for a couple years. Earlier this year, however, I bought a Diamond Black Ice after shooting many other bows & I've gotta tell ya, it's the sweetest shooting dang thing I've ever handled. It's not crazy fast like some of these 4,000,000 fps monsters that others are making, but it's light weight, super smooth & I can hold better groups at 80 yards with it then I used to be able to hold at 60. It also has a nice thin grip on it, which I'm a big fan of, and costs about $300-400 less than many of the other models listed so far in this thread. Just my .02. Matt S.

    Rattling and decoys

Great topic Jay. I haven't tried rattling for coues yet, but have called in a couple mulies like that in thick timber. I have also been dang near ran over by quite a few coues deer for blowing on a fawn bleater, including this doe that came in at a run from over 100 yards to less than 20. A couple years ago, when holed up in a ground blind w/ AZP&Y, we called in a doe and she came flying in snorting, jumping & bucking like a bronc in a rodeo. Ran up to w/in 15 yards of the blind before skidding to a stop & turning tail. Calling is a very exciting way to get close, when it works.

    Archery Success

We're all disappointed in that little deception.... guess we'll have to dip you in honey & then roll you on a red-ant hill. But until then, welcom aboard. Now that you're a member, you can kiss your workday productivity good-bye. hard to get much done when you have to "check posts" every 30 minutes....
