mattys281 replied to CouesHunterAZ's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Great photos of good times. Congrats to your family on some great hunting! -
Thank God for that. I'd hate to share all the honey holes I've found 50-100 yards from the road.

Any objections to somebody starting another policy on you? good luck it sounds like fun.

Planning on flinging lead or pointy sticks? Archery tag is otc in az with lots of public land that holds nice bucks. I believe nm is all on a lottery basis. -
Thanks, that's a lot better than what I'd expect.

Nice pics! Ive still yet to run into one of those. Some day I hope.

Nice looking rig. Dont ya just love that new bow smell?

Just out of curiosity what's the price per round to throw lead down range with that beast?

Tissue Resistance to Arrow Penetration
mattys281 replied to JACK's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Dont think for a minute there isnt the same amount coming out of rifle hunts. I can't even tell you how many 'hunters' have told me they missed and when you talk to them a little further you learn they never even went to look for blood. They just assumed because it ran away it wasn't hurt. The problem is wouldcraft and ethics (or lack thereof), not choice of equipment. -
Tissue Resistance to Arrow Penetration
mattys281 replied to JACK's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
I would say that's the case regardless of penetration. A poor shot is a poor shot. Which only leads back to the argument of a flatter trajectory aiding in range miscalculations, the animal moving after release, etc. At the end of the day, I dont think there is a right/wrong answer. It comes down to personal preference and comfort level. I personally do not shoot a fast bow well. I bought a brand new fast one last year and sold it off within a couple months, going back to my older slower bow because I, personally, shoot better with it. That's me. I know some others that are human shooting machines and can drive tacks with fast rigs. That's them. In the end you are the only one who is responsible for the shot you take, so use what you're confident in, but know there's always a trade off. -
Tissue Resistance to Arrow Penetration

Having read your comments here and in the previous thread on fast rigs, it seems pretty obvious that you're trolling, but that's ok, i'll bite. have you ever actually killed or even seen an animal killed by an arrow? Do you know anything at all beyond internet bs, say frompractical experience? Ive killed quite a few animals with arrows that were middle weight at medium speeds. These guys are nowshooting arrows that are the same weight or heavier, plus about 30-40 fps from my 6 year old bow. Thats a ton more energy than needed. These 'fast flat' arrows you continue to harp on have way more than whats needed. If it makes you feel better to lob 1000 grain cedar logs at 150 fps, knock yourself out, but dont be stupid enough to think every single other person with a bow is misguided and you're the only one that has it right. Kids and ladies kill elk with 250 grain arrows off of 40 lb bows all the time. You put one in the right spot, it doesn't take much to get lungs. Period. Buh-bye. -
Tissue Resistance to Arrow Penetration

You could be right, it's been a while since I heard that little tid bit, thrown out by a hunters ed instructor that is an archery-history enthusiast. Regardless, the arrow would slow down as it reached the apex of the arch & then gravity would cause it to accelerate on the downward stroke, so to speak, thus greatly increasing the kenetic energy on impact. The guy we had talking to us said that the arrows the old English archers used weighed over 2000 grains and would hit with enough force to pass through an armored knight, his horse & still bury in the ground, which is why archers were the most feared of combatants on the battle field. But, when you compare that to modern archers who use a horizontal trajectory for hunting & competition, I thing the heavier arrow trade off very quickly becomes a wasted effort. The name of the game now is accuracy & precision. Penetration is certainly still important, but I'd argue all day long that putting the arrow in the right place far out weighs any penetration concerns. -
Tissue Resistance to Arrow Penetration
mattys281 replied to JACK's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
Heavier is better... if you're a medieval archer trying to push an arrow through an armored soldier at a range of 100 yards or more. The technique used here was to launch the arrow in an arch that is more vertical than horizontal and allow gravity to accelerate it on the downward side. Their arrows were actually going faster on impact, due to gravity than they were when they left the bow. The same principle do not necessarily apply to horizontally aimed projectiles where precision aiming is more important than all out kinetic energy. Its a trade off. But at the end of the day, animals fall to all manner of arrows so shoot whatever makes you feel most confident. -

Yeah but if we all switch back to slower rigs we'll need pin sight brackets that are 6" tall to be able to sight in out to sixty yards. What's the drag coefficient of punching through an aluminum pin guard? My 380 grain 270ish fps arrows do a pretty good job of blowing through deer. -
Great bull! I love 27, full of big bulls, bears and even a couple deer left in there.

The only way I see to really improve at anything is experience. Unfortunately gaining experience often means making a mess out of something others may do nicer and neater. For what its worth I think a lot of the lost animals are from people poking and hoping, which comes down to an ethics question that im not interested in batting around.

Strangest thing that has ever came into your call???
mattys281 replied to lionhunter's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
While hunting choppers place a few years ago I'd tried a jackrabbit wailed as I heard pigs can respond to predator calls some times. Never did call in a pig but I called in 3 blacktail deer one of which ran by at a full sprint within about 10 feet. Guess those deer really like jackrabbits. -
This is our lab with her 'best friend' in tow. Amazing how hard it is to get a picture of one without the other in it. She has our 1 y.o. trained so well that we now have to keep her out back at dinner time in order to keep the baby's food on her plate instead of on the floor. Smart dog!

Women & youth hunters have been killing elk with 40 lb bows & light arrows for a long long time. Put the arrow in the right place, you have a dead elk. Put it in the wrong place, you've got a big problem on your hands. Same goes for other animals. Once again, I don't think the choice of equipment is 1/2 as important as the skill & decision making ability of the person launching the arrow, or bullet for that matter.

What's the minimum pounds and draw length range? Im shopping for something for my 13 y.o. daughter. Thanks

Now that they've already levied a substantial increase in capital gains taxes for investments im kind of doubting they're going to mess with them in any way that would reduce their take on it. I paid so much taxes on my stock sales from last year I honestly question why I didn't just toss that money into a pillow case in the closet. Guess that leads us to the new american dream: forget about getting wealthy, just try to save enough to escape. O hh, wait! Silly me, there's a 45% exit tax to take funds out of the country even though you've already been taxed on your money. I agree with some things that are said on this forum, but some things just sound like complete paranoia! "Obama wants to seize your IRA's and 401K's so the government can "reinvest" it for you." Do you really believe that??? Seriously man, how do you make the jump to "seizing IRA's and 401K's....."??? How do make that correlation? Who needs an elk tag when you've got this?

Congrats! Nothing better than holding a brand new little baby. -
Can't go wrong with cannon. I bought the digital rebel x kit they had at Costco a couple years ago the came with the 300mm zoom. It takes good pics. Nice shots thanks for sharing.

Nice pics. What kind of camera are you using?

Exactly. I wouldn't mind helping them to thin the herd.
