Help - not enough elevation - Vortex HST
mattys281 replied to Sonof12's topic in Long Range Shooting
Im sure im about to show my ignorance on the topic but: for a long range rig, dont you want it zeroed at close to the bottom of the turret travel so you gain the maximum amount of elevation adjustment? -
Wow that was a pretty steep fine back then.

I just picked up a big Agnes fly creek ul1 on sale on amazon. With the footprint its less than 2lbs. Can't wait to give that one a try.

"You here that?! That elk's cussing at us, shoot her again!!! Hold my beer!"

Im not sure where youre going but id venture to say mountain lion, coyote, rabbits and maybe even bears are still legal. I normally scout bow in hand with a quiver full of broadheads. Especially after I walked up to a bedded mountain lion a few years ago with nothing more than a camera in hand. Forty yards away and no weapon, so I just took a couple pics. Luck favors the prepared.

I do have mixed emotions about how fast it happened. I had an elaborate backpack hunt planned and was super excited about the adventure to come. Because of a late start out of town the night before we ended up hitting Plan B just for the morning and that's where it all happened. I never even unloaded my truck or set up camp! I never saw a bull in person or on camera bigger than this bull throughout my scouting and I never knew about this bull, so with that I had no problems tagging out early on him! JIM> I think everyone knows that 45 minutes was the culmination of many weeks and many many miles of scouting. It was a good long hunt, just most of it happend prior to the season. You shouldn't have mixed emotions on that, just reschedule your pack trip for january coues deer. Congrats again, thats one beautiful bull. Im more than a little envious.

I currently am both employed and self employed. It is my dream to be 100% self employed one day, and truth be told I could probably do it now, but theres a value to having someone else pay for your insurance and give you paid vacations. I have a 13 year old, an 18 month old baby and another on the way, so for a few more years I'll tow the safer road. There are huge benefits to being self employed though. Make your own schedule, tax write offs, etc. But dont buy this 'you're your own boss' crap. Your customers are the boss, always and no matter what industry you're in. At least they are if you want to keep that business open.

Manufacturing has been on fire for the last several years. Machinists are in high demand and theres some decent manufacturing tech programs at gateway ccs.

That's a great buck. Congrats! -
I'm pretty anxious for it. I'd like to hang another hard-horned buck on the wall.

Sounds like a good plan. I'll also be holding out for a 200+ coues buck this january....... probably..... maybe not....... If my hunt goes longer than 4 days, them forkies best be duckin.

I wish I had the luck to draw a goat tag, but seems like my fate is to keep getting bonus points.

'tis the season for kills - a little advice given for leftover part disposal
mattys281 replied to naturegirl's topic in The Campfire
Covering the animal does far more than just keeping it out of sight. It also keeps dust, road debris & bugs, from getting all over it. What I was taught about wild game was three things: keep it cool, dry & keep it clean. As for cutting animals into pieces being new, that's far from true. Backcountry hunters have been hiking animals out of the wilderness in backpack size pieces forever. I've seen many pictures of guys with heads strapped on the external frame packs lugging 100+lb loads down the trail from back in the 60's & 70's. I've seen more than a couple videos of Dwight Schuh & Larry D Jones doing it in the 80's & early 90's. I've personally only ever shot a couple animals that were close enough to a road to come out in one piece, everything else has come out on my back. -
Sure sounds like a great experience for the both of you. Makes me real antsy for November when im taking my baby girl (13 now ) on her kaibab doe hunt. Thanks for the ride. Good times!
