Congrats he’s a dandy

Welcome back. Just read your previous posts from last year, sure sounds like a lot of action and a great hunt. Don’t be fooled, a lot of them do indeed look up. They’re not as tuned in to treestands as their larger eastern cousins, but they can learn dang fast. Good luck on your hunt!

That is awesome! Congrats to him.

Deer are never evenly distributed over an area. Even in really good areas they’ll normally be found in pockets. If you were to look at a huge piece of land, 90% is just fly over country, they pass through and may browse along the way but don’t spend significant time in it and usually have a million different trails they can use to get from point a to point b. you have to keep going until you find the pockets they like, but even then they’re not there everyday. I’ve had spots where I get deer on cam all day for several days in a row, then they’re gone anywhere from several days to over a week then they show back up again. If you’re seeing lots of sign it’s worth checking back several times. They may just not be there now because they’re somewhere else on their loop at the moment. I’ve had to sit in a tree stand for more than three days before I ever saw a buck quite a few times. whether you’re ambush hunting or glassing, you still have to find their core areas and then invest enough time for them to produce.

Walking into my stand tonight I ran into a decent (for the area) little buck out cruising at 2:15pm.

Nice work jazz, congrats!
-
Another nice one! Sneaker’s got this mule deer game on cruise control. Congrats!
-
I’ve seen some cruising but nothing heavy yet. Bucks are definitely becoming more visible in the heavy timber where I’m hunting
-
Congrats on your pig, that’s a helluva way to get the archery career started.
-
Very nice. Glad you had a good hunt

They get big by being invisible. Check out some of the creek bottom jungles. with that many deer in the area, I’d bet there’s definitely some biggins, you’re just glassing right over the top of them. congrats, that’s a fine buck

I’m going in with 9 and my hunting buddy has 8. Good luck.

Merry Christmas all. and merry deer season to the bow hunters that are still out chasing. Man I can’t wait for New Years!

24b is a fine unit. If it’s close to home or otherwise convenient, I’d stick with it. I think people, especially newbies, often do themselves more harm than good by trying to learn a huge area or lots of units when it’s more profitable for a bow hunter to know every square inch of a couple ridges. Are you looking for a certain caliber of buck? If you have a tape measure goal, spot and stalk is probably the game you’ll want to play. If your goal is just to wrap an archery tag around any legal deer, your odds will be exponentially higher if you setup an ambush site in a pinch point or some place they like to rut. These spots really aren’t that hard to find. Look for benches on hill sides, and open saddles on ridge tops, especially if there’s thick cover close by. As others have said, if you’re into does it’s just a matter of time before the boys show up to the party.
