That's the one. I never camped out in there but hiked it a few times. Very steep and rough off the north edge.

Years ago I kicked up a couple in the north side of that wilderness area on the north of mingus mountain. Can't think of the name now... unit 19a. Anyhow, if they were there way back then theres likely more of them now the way they're expanding their range.

You bowhunters getting antsy yet???
mattys281 replied to mattys281's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
They may be late, but you know they won't miss the party. Just keep the girls in sight, you're on the right track. I just found out we have an iso audit first week of January. I dont get to play until after.... -
50 ft of light weight cord. Useful for field dressing, tying dead stuff to your pack and in a pinch it can save your life by building shelter and starting fires.

Where do you pick those up petsmart? I never saw one before this thread. I like the idea more and more.

I second that.

Seem to be hearing more and more about them in recent years.

great year for my family 4 for 4 2coues/2mulies

Thats one heck of a year. Congrats to all of you! -
I liked it and was thinking it may be a good option for my lab. Shes an 80lb. Arm yanker. Generally speaking a great dog, but her walking manners are lacking.

Congrats! Great buck!

Im pretty lucky if I get to shoot once every month to six weeks ish. Fortunately for me, im very sneaky so I dont normally have to shoot that far.

Thats a big boy. Im over due to get my beast out in the sticks, probably few enough snakes now to be safe.

That's mee too. I fell out of my routine a couple years ago. Too many work hours, too many beers afterwards & not enough sleep to get up early & exercise. I decided that packing that deer out this year was harder than it should have been, so after two beerless nights, I was finally able to drag my butt outta the sack at 4:00am this morning & put two miles under my shoes. They were slow miles, but it's a start.... or rather, a restart. Good bye sweet blue moons & new castles, I'll miss you!

fixed blade or mechanical broad heads ?!?
mattys281 replied to jgraffaz's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
I switched to mechanicals a couple years ago after losing a deer on a poor hit with a fixed blade. I may have lost the deer anyway, but I figured that id go with a larger cutting diameter to try to increase the tissue damage and increase the chance of recovery should I ever make another bad hit. As far as penetration goes, I've only hit two deer with them so far, but both times my g5 m echanicals blew threw them and just kept on going, leaving a 1-1/2" hole behind. If I ever draw an elk tag I may go back to fixed heads, but im sticking with mechanicals on deer and small animals. -

Getting closer. Just a couple weekends now! >>>----------> -
I dont shoot anything with aluminum in it. I like the g5 T3 expandable. 100% steel and they open up to 1-1/2" cutting diameter. They fly like field points and put a big hole through deer when they get there.

Happy bday. Looks like you spent it in style!

10 year olds first buck 3x3

Thats some dang good shooting. Congrats to him! -
Thats a tough unit for muleys, at least the parts I know are. I shot one in there several years ago during the archery hunt but it was a stroke of luck that it happened to be a muley. I was just looking for any deer with antlers. They seem to be pretty few and far between. I hear rumors of people see in good ones in the very most western part of the unit, but I dont know anybody that I'd really say has them figured out in that unit. Decent coues hunt, but I'd personally look elsewhere for muleys.

Yeah, dang 'smart' phones right? Beetween the sideways pictures and the stupid auto correct always changing what I type, its only a matter of time before I use mine for target practice.
