unit 22 - archery back country hunt questions
mattys281 replied to Soul Archer's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I dont know hells gate that well but have hiked into the mazatzals several times on several different trails. Never seen anyone past about five miles in. -
If you can get 30 minutes a day that's all you need. I was late for work today and did a decent chest workout in about 17 minutes, flat bench, incline, dips. Not much of a workout but every littler bit counts. I doubt many in this thread has a lot of free time. Yeah i know, but even thats hard to do at times. Sunday morning i started working at 9ish and went straight thru til about 10pm monday night. Ive been up since 4:30 this morning and am about a half hour away from wrapping up for the night. Been a tough couple months. Id give just about anything to have an extra hour to go jogging, but am a couple weeks away from it. I take breaks to have dinner with the family and i take an hour a day to do bath time and story time with my two year old, but thats about it for the moment. Its temporary, ill get through it and the retirement nest egg will look a lot better, but man im hatin myself right now. Just took on too much and then fell behind....

Need Help (Hunting Clothes Layering)
mattys281 replied to couesfreak23's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I used cabelas base layers for years but switched to smart wool merino wool baselayers. Much warmer. -
Im glad you guys are staying after it. Ive been working so much the last couple months, i cant afford to sleep much less anything else. Thought i could see the light at the end, but then got offered another hot project for twice the normal consulting fee.. guess the exercise can wait another week or two.

So who thinks they are REALLY good with a bow?
mattys281 replied to lancetkenyon's topic in The Campfire
I believe its pretty common knowledge that when al gore invented the internet, he equipped it with a bs filter that prevents anyone from putting anything that isnt true out there on the web. Therefore, if you see it on youtube, it has to be true. -
Thats too cool. I think bighorns are just about the only game animal in az that ive yet to lay eyes on in person. Thanks for sharing.

"Stupid regs!" Yeah, that one goes in the favorites.

Good opportunity to burn a couple of those vacation days sitting in a treestand trying to poke a deer in the boiler room with a pointy stick. Or a bear or a turkey.... always something to hunt and im in the same boat with ya.

Had a couple of my arrows that have need refletched for a while, so I decided to try something new with the ez fletch quick twists. Followed the instructions to the letter and ended up with 2 of the 6 arrows I fletched up having fletchings falling off once they dried. Another has a fletching coming off after about 3 or 4 shots. My typical 3-4 inch group at 40 also opened up to about 6" using these things. Thought maybe I was just having a bad morning so I shot some of my other arrows with blazers and they were right on the money as always. I guess if it ain't broke, dont fix it! Looks like I'll be buying some more blazers this week.

Congrats. Make sure you post a picture of the tag when it arrives, some of us never get to see one. I've drawn a couple elk tags, so I know they're real, but to me an Arizona antelope tag is kind of like bigfoot, the lockness monster and the g-spot: people claim to have seen them, but nobody can really prove it....

Lucky indeed. Otherwise you might now have the memory of the day you proposed, she said yes, and then changed her mind after walking 15 miles back to the truck and spending the evening looking for lost mules.

My first two deer I refer to as 'pin cushions'. At three arrows each, I also shoot til they drop. Arrows are cheap compared to a lost animal or a long arduous tracking job.

I always take one when I can. The one i took last summer was the worst for me as I saw him go down behind some trees and thought he was down for good. About 15 minutes later he was back up staggering around. I had to wait almost another 15 minutes after that before he came out in the open and presented another shot, which I took as quickly as I could. At that point he was dead on his feet ready to topple at any minute but I figured seconds were better than another few minutes. So I hit him with number two and he dropped on the spot.

Probably about 12 years or so ago after came across an elk carcass tangled in the top wire of the fence that runs around that big ranch on the north of Kendrick mountain. I thought there might be more so I walked the full length of two sides of the square shaped property and found a total of six elk carcasses tangled in that fence. Seems like it was more of an elk net than a fence really. I later heard that he was made to take down the top strand which was about 5 feet high at the time, but I dont know if its true or not. Havent been back since. I also found a rather large javelina floating in a mine shaft full of water once. Water level was about 6 feet down, there was no escape for a person, much less a hooved animal. More recently, my daughter and I saw an American alligator catch a duck and tear it apart over at the wildlife world zoo a few months ago. it was like watching a live episode from the discovery channel.

I totally beg to differ mattys281. Ignorance of the law is NOOO excuse!!!. There are people that shed hunt that don't even hunt. Many do however own a quad, rhino, polaris, bike etc... and there are NUMEROUS laws regarding the offroad use of these vehicles. My thoughts are, They don't give a dang and it will hurt the hunters or outdoorsman that are ethical and follow the law. Book em dano is what I say..NO EXCUSE for this to happen. I'm not trying to excuse anyone, I just don't think there's the sense of malice that others seem to think is there. I know too many people who naively think you can go out in the forest and basically do whatever you want. Especially people that are new to it. They think you can drive anywhere, camp any where, shoot anywhere, etc. I encountered a guy on a side by side a few years ago that was cruising down a closed logging road I'd walked down with his kid. They stopped to say good morning and ask if I'd seen anything. I chatted with them a little and politely explained that they'd crossed the wilderness boundary and were in big trouble if caught. They thanked me, turned around and left. Is that the rare case? Maybe. But he wasn't a lazy disrespectful slob, he was just ignorant about where he was.

That would do it. Went deer hunting with a guy who took 2 gallon jars of pickled eggs and 2 cases of Schlitz beer. All animals took off during the night and I left the next morning! I think it killed the trees in that camping spot! Didn't they later start referring to that as 'The Wallow Fire'? Cool idea. I've had a blackie come up right behind me before over in 27. It's hard to use the side arm if you don't see or hear them, and they can be pretty quiet...

Let him grow, he'll be bigger next year.

Congrats on a great bull! If you can only shoot one, it ought to be one like that. But she didn't really think you were serious did she???

Archery Deer hunts north of the rim in Dec/Jan?
mattys281 replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Too cold for my blood, but still the more opportunity the better. If it gets even a couple guys out of my units, I'm all for it! -
I'd be willing to bet that a fair share of these people that everyone "hates" and finds "disgusting" are actually completely ignorant to the fact that they are doing anything wrong, especially if the theory that they just recently go into it is correct. The hunting community is, generally speaking, much more aware of forest/wilderness/game laws than any non-hunting member of the public. In fact, I know a lot of people that do hunt who never bother to crack the binding on a set of regs. I'm sure there's a couple that just don't care and are out there just trying to piss everyone off, but I have to think that most are just blissfully ignorant and will remain so until someone tells them otherwise or until they get a ticket.

The best I've had in Arizona is the little 2 year old forky muley I shot in 2013 at about 8500 in elevation. That guys was tasty and so tender you didn't even need to cut the steaks, you could just break off bites with the side of the fork. If you want good meat, shoot the little guys! Second I'd say is cow elk, for Az. The best wild meat I've had from any location though was a New Jersey whitetail doe that was shot out of a cornfield. Good stuff there!

Good luck Coach, hope you guys do well. I've recently negotiated a free weekend for myself in May, so I'll be heading to the White Mountains to give a go over there at the OTC thunder chickens in 27.

Nice trophy for sure. I once saw a white mule deer doe up by Prescott. Running with a bunch of normally colored ones, it sure stuck out like a sore thumb.
