Anyone mind if we fire this thread back up? These aren't the most "outdoorsie", but still pretty adventures. A couple years ago, my younger brother, who was stationed in Germany at the time, sent out an email to me and my other brothers basically saying, "Hey, I'm down to my last six months, if any of you are going to visit you'd better do it NOW!" I jumped at the opportunity and my kiddo and I hopped over the puddle for a week in the old world. We stayed with them at their townhouse in the village of Nohfeldon, which may be the most beautiful place I've ever seen. It's a small town nestled in the mountains with a couple creeks running through it and surrounded by national forest. We spent a couple morning cruising around on the hiking trails looking for some German deer. Caught a glimpse of some once running away, but didn't get a good enough look to really see what kind they were. They looked much bigger than our mule deer, but not elk size by any means. Turns out the Germans are hunting fools. There's elevated blinds/stands all over the forest and dang near every field you drive by you can find a couple around them. We climbed up into one of them to look around. Pretty cool set-ups. Most are made from materials laying around in the forest. These are from a hiking trail in the surrounding forest overlooking Nohfeldon. My daughter and brother in front of some Roman ruins in the city of Trier. This may be my favorite picture ever: me and my nephew leaving the ruins, and he is not too happy about it. Strassburg, France which is just a couple hours drive away from Nohfeldon.

Stabilizer? How do you know what works best for your set up?
mattys281 replied to apache12's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
There's several functional benefits to using a stabilizer. As mentioned, a longer one is great for helping to hold steady on longer shots or on shots where you need to shave .0005" off the back of a gnats arse. There's a reason why every tournament shooter in the world uses one: they work. For most hunting situations, however, I think longer stabilizers are over kill when you consider the size of an animals kill zone and also when you consider that trade-off in having a huge stabilizer sticking off the front of your bow. Plus, I've killed a deer at 80 yards with a 6" stabilizer, so it's absolutely not necessary to have one for shooting long ranges. But it does help if you can maneuver around without it driving you nuts. On a hunting bow, I think the primary things you should be concerned with are noise reduction and how it balances the bow. I use an offset on mine and fiddle around with it until I get it positioned such that the bow sits perfectly balanced in my hand without me squeezing it at all and does not tip either side to side or front to back after a shot. The only bow motion I want is a straight downward drop from gravity and the release of the tension on my string. Incidentally, I made these offsets in my shop at home and have a couple more floating around. If you want to play around with one, pm your address and I'll gladly throw one in the mail for you. -
Ive had a couple run ins with their officers and honestly couldnt say a bad word about any that I've encountered. Theyve always been polite and helpful. Im glad you posted about a positive experience, I think their officers often get a bad name because people are unhappy about political stuff tha. happens waaaay above their pay grade. These guys in the trucks are hourly wage earners trying to support themselves and their families like the rest of us.

off off topic bored. cinema not books...

"The lord says he can get me out of this, but he's pretty sure you're ****ed! Ah-hahaha!" william Wallace's crazy irish friend, braveheart. Another good one, but I cant remember the exact wording: Creepy persian: "we will rain so many arrows on you that they will blot out the sun!" spartan: "than we shall fight in the shade." -

+ another vote for the fatigue. It's very easy, especially when you're new to the sport and very enthusiastic about it, to over shoot. I did it for years when I was a teenager and could never get over the 40 yard hump. At some point I got smart and started limiting myself to a max of 2 dozen shots per session and it also helped my shooting consistency level out. I shoot better now at 60 than I did at 40 back then.

I know who I'm putting on speed dial for the August deer hunt. Got plans, bud? -
The thing that has probably helped me more than anything is developing a strict shot routine. Talk yourself through every step. Start by speaking out loud and later on switch to using the inside voice. For me it goes like this: 1. Take a big breath in and squeeze the handle of the bow and my release, then let the breathe out and relax your hands. This will make you less likely to squeeze during the shot. 2. Take a breath in and draw. Once you hit your anchor point and settle in, let that breathe out. 3. Take a little breathe in, hold it and aim. 4. Squeeze that trigger. I try to squeeze it how holding steady and increasing the pressure in the palm of my hand against the bow handle slightly so that you dont even notice you squeezed the trigger. I talk myself every shot even on animals. Draw, aim, squeeze! Crap, i missed! Draw, aim, squeeze again!

I was thinking the same thing. Its her tag she can fill it as she sees fit, but its so much easier to draw a cow tag for meat, i cant imagine hanging a coveted hard to get bull tag on the first spike that meanders by. On day 10, spike down, on day 1-9 6x6 or nothing. And i'm a brown its down hunter about 98% of the time. Bull tags and antelope tags are exceptions. -
Got bored with wearing out the bag target, so I moved up to random objects from the recycling bin. Today I was trying to shoot the cow on the milk carton from across the garage. 13 yards: 15 yards: I'm ending on a high note for the day!

Theres definetely elk in the mazatzal, but have an evacuation plan ready for when you do drop one. Packing one out alone could kill a guy or at least make you wish you were dead. Thats steep country! Have a good buddy with stout legs on speed dial, or even better, have mulepacker on speed dial and a case of his favorite beer on ice when he gets there.

There's no rating system for the quality of your posts, just the quantity. It's like fishing, just keep throwing crap out there & see what happens?!

I'll be using that weekend to start the trail cams up and then spend some time in my deer tree. During the last couple of august hunts I've literally had turkeys roll by me every single day, but i've never shot one because i dont want to give up a day of deer hunting dealing with a dead turkey. Then after i inevitably shoot my deer i haul butt home afterwards, with the unfilled turkey tag in my pocket. Maybe if theyre in there in may and deer isnt on the menu i'll finally stick one to the ground.

I was wondering if someone would mention 1. -
Wonder what they put in tofu that makes people so crazy and angry? Im thinking about cutting vegies out of my diet completely just to avoid the risk of ending up like that. I guy can live on steak venison beer and coffee, right?

Tim McGraw Anti-Gunner!1....What a buzzzz kill!!
mattys281 replied to sidwynder505's topic in The Campfire
Its too bad, I like quite a few of his songs and it seems like the last couple of years hes one of the few that still has some music that sounds countryish. Now all I'll see is an 'I (heart) obama' sticker whenever they play one. Thanks a lot Tim! -
Weve got a rule in my shop: bday boy buys the first round! Well not really a rule so much as a guideline, but i think it should still apply.Happy bday!

As others have stated, its a big unit. Id think the odds of a chance encounter pretty slim. If youre real concerned, let him have the old haunts and russle up a couple new drainages. The best spots are the ones where you see nobody, ex or otherwise. -
What do you gain by moving from an entry level bow to a high end set up
mattys281 replied to apache12's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
First arrow i ever split was with an old wood riser browning bow i bought used in a pawn shop for $150 about a 100 years ago. Ive split three more since then with bows ranging in price from almost nothing to top shelf. Even low end bows shoot more consistently than 98% of the people who shoot. I wouldnt expect to gain much other than a little speed and the number of "sweet rig" comments you may get at a 3d shoot. At the end of the day, just buy what you like and what you are comfortable with (both shooting and price range). Theyre made so well that youd have a hard time finding one that doesnt out shoot you. -
Welcome aboard. Sure looks like you guys know how to knock them down, i look forward to reading some of your adventures.

Seems to me like the difference between a "member" and "premier member" is a lot like the difference between bud light and bud light platinum: fancier label, but same crap inside.
