    2015 / 2016 hunt predictions

Its been about a month since I was out, but at that point alpine had about 3 inches of snow on it. That late in the spring should make for good runoff I hope. Kicked up a bachelor herd down in 27 of about 11-13 bulls, several of which were already looking dang good. I think unit 1 and 27 bull hunters are going to have the opportunity at some real brutes.

    nature hits the city

It didnt look real big to me either. But whether he was 100# or 300, it would seem he was big enough.

    nature hits the city

The deer's cry's are haunting no doubt. When discussing hunting with non hunters or anti's, I'll mention that despite Disney's portayal, wild animals don't "pass on" with friends & family softly sobbing at their side. I hear that. Theres a youtube video floating around that shows a lion kill of a 4x4 muley buck. Takes the cat over 40 minutes to get the job done. But I guess letting nature take its course is still more 'fair' or 'humane', right?

    nature hits the city

Apparently that bear has not read peta's information on alternative methods for wildlife population control. That deer didnt have to be killed, it could have been sterilized and then relocated. What a barbarian!

    Backpacking in border units?

I hunted down there a few years ago for the first time and witnessed three new democrats tramp into our country on the very first night. Turns out that beat down trail I was sitting on was a coyote trail, not a game trail. If you find the best looking trail youve ever seen and its approximately 30-60 yards up hill from and running parallel to a maintained hiking trail, be ready to see more than deer. The ones I saw were marked off with orange flagging tape too. Pretty smart really, just shadow the hiking trail through the remote areas. Anyhow, of the ones I saw it went like this: first by cruises by me at 20 yards, never sees me. A minute or two later the second one cruises by, he spots me. I wave to him, he waves to me and carries on. Another minute or two later the third cruises by and doesnt see me, but then I see the second one come back with the third and point me out to him. I wave again, they wave back again, and then leave. i was sitty 20 yards off their trail. Decided to pack It in for the night after that. Lesson I took away from it: carry your side arm and try to hide better next time.

I actually drew a rifle deer tag!

It's the G1 tag, late season in C4 I believe. Once you draw the tag, you then draw for access which can be key to success. Hunt has a 35% success rate and some really good deer get killed if the migration works out right. After day 3, it's a meat hunt for me. An excuse to go hang out with my friends up there and hopefully bring some meat home. Bad thing about the hunt is it's impossible to scout. Being a migration hunt, there are literarily no bucks there during the summer. Ever hunted the trinity alps? Its big enough that I have a hard time thinking you cant find some solitude even though I know it gets hit pretty hard by the cali bt hunters. I corresponded with a guy from Jesse's hunting forum a few years ago that said once you get past 5 miles, you're pretty much alone. He shot a huge one in there.

    Guess the Species

I want to change my original guess. After closer observation, I now think we've actually discovered the 'day spa' where the Kardashian girls go to hide out from the paparazzi. If you look closely at the one on the right with the huge rump and the scrawny darker one pushing up on it you've seen kim and kanye west.

  13. Picked this up last weekend over at Barnes & Noble and have nearly finished it already. Of the 3 or 4 sniper books I've read, this is probably the best so far. It's absolutely amazing to me the patience and craft these people have. This book focuses on WWII, Korea & Vietnam, but also dips back as far as WWI & gives some history on sniping that went as far back as long shots with smooth bore muskets that happened centuries ago and relays a story of a sniper kill made with a crossbow before firearms were around. Also has a great chapter on the Massacre of Elephant Valley in which Carlos Hathcock & his partner kept a company of VC pinned down for 5 days and took out nearly all of them before pulling out and calling in artillery to finish off the last dozen or so. The one survivor refused to believe that it had been the work of only two riflemen. Good read and great price! http://www.amazon.com/One-Shot-Kill-Charles-Sasser/dp/0671682199/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1434216164&sr=1-1&keywords=one+shot+one+kill&pebp=1434216187870&perid=CC77DB9EAAC94AE986E5
  14. I had a big ole fat one sitting on my back wall about two days ago, smug as could be. Not the least bit concerned about the silly humans around him. Dang urban birds! Sat there staring at me while I walked out back, tossed the football for the dog a couple times, wrestled & chased around with my little 2y.o. daughter & got the hose out to water the garden. Finally, this other dove flies over & lands beside him, scoots over to him & they kinda peck at each other a little bit then fly off together. Reminded me of that Brad Paisley song Waiting on a Woman. We've all been there, buddy...

Recommended Reading: One Shot - One Kill

I read that one too and also could not put it down. I think the only reason that I like this one better is that it mixes up the personal accounts with some historically relevant background information on early use of snipers and the formation/disbandment/reformation of sniper training programs. You couldn't go wrong throwing either book (or both) in your pack for a long trek in the mountains. Gotta have something to do when the sun goes down and it's fourteen hours before dawn in January.

    Scouting

Thats me about 90% of the time too. I shot a little forky mule deer two summers ago, by far the tastiest deer I've taken so far. This year I'll shoot the first legal one I see here in Az, as I'm very short on time due to a fall hunt in Nebraska. Im going up there planning to shoot a couple does and hopefully a buck, but I'll be fine if I only tag does.

    Scouting

I dont get out near as much as I would like to. Work and family take up most of my time, like many others. Ive found though that if youre satisfied with shooting any legal deer, you can just keep hitting the good spots you already know year after year. If deer liked it last year theyll still like it this year. If you need to shoot a booner to be happy than you should plan on spending millions of hours scouting or hire a guide.

lion kills a wolf on video

My money says that wolf was sniffing around the momma cougar's den looking for kittens. Either that or trying to chase her off a fresh kill.

    Water in the backcountry

Like I said I mostly ambush hunt, so excluding the hump in and out, I dont overheat or drain myself that much. Also, at 6'0" i only weigh 170 have very little extra pounds and typically go pretty bare bones. During the late season if my pack weighs even a pound over 40, im leaving something behind. If I pack in during the early sason, I'll be under 30 on the pack weight, and with clear skies and no rain in the forecast I've been at 25 lbs for a 2 nighter. If I need water, I'll drop down of the ridge into the creek bed and get it, but as this takes over an hour and a half in the dark over rocky steep terrain I do everything I can to avoid it.

One of the main reasons I dont have cable or satellite. Nothing but this kind of crap on anyway. I mostly watch documentaries or comedies on netflix and I read a lot.

    Water in the backcountry

I consume most of mine on the way in and out. I dont move around much while hunting.
