Optimal shooting distances for specific magnification scopes
CatfishKev posted a topic in Long Range Shooting
Looking for what would be considered optimal distances for 3-9, 4-12 etc. power scopes for a kid. Target would be deer. Not looking for what YOU are capable of, just a recomended baseline for kids generally speaking. It happens to be for my daughter who is still a little flinchy. She has a 243 currently which I have a can on order for but it wont be here in time. Thanks -
So dude I work with has Costco stretch pants which are like the outdoors water repellent ones for like $15. How could you go wrong? Thoughts???

Optimal shooting distances for specific magnification scopes

Thanks guys. It has a junk 3-9 power. I was thinking going to a 4-12, or up to 14. Its got a thunder beast break that the can connects to. Not sure the measurement. You got a can you want to unload? -
Just took a look at this job. It will consist of tile roof repairs, exterior painting of the whole house (2 story), drywall repairs, interior painting whole house, some trim carpentry, some plumbing and some minor electrical work. Ok me if anyone is interested, or even if you have a crew and would be interested in the entire job.

I got a job over there I could probably use a couple guys on. It would be a couple weeks out and last for 3-4 weeks. Basically it's a rehab

My son has a junior deer and elk tag. He will be shooting a 7-08 and taking a 243 as a emergency back up gun. Optimal shooting range will be 100-400 yards 500 in a pinch. 1. I have always had the kids aim for double lung shots and not through the shoulder. Should I change gears and have them aim for the meat of the shoulder? I never did this because I didn't want to waste meat. 2. Givin the optimal shooting range what type of ammo would you recommend that I could pick up at cal ranch TODAY since I'm in Sierra Vista that will work well on these animals. I have been shooting winchester super X, and hornady SST. Last year my daghter killed her cow with the sst and it was a lung shot that penciled though. I'm kind of looking for something that will open decent on a lung shot if that even exists. I was kind of thinking about the Berger VLD but I'm not sure. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am just not up to speed on ballistics.

I can hold a flashlight real well. I bet you can but no moonlighting for us. Funny story.. Last time we did a job over there a bunch of your homies rolled up in a panel truck that said something like "tucson restaurant supply". They said they bring the dogs in the abandon house to train them then left since we were working in it. Later that day I was masking off the garage for painting and found a big bag of weed stuffed behind the hot water heater. Ended up chucking it in the dumpster. Awhile later I found out my guys had jumped in and took it.

I know a guy goes out 3 times a week would probably gladly take you along. But the only shooting you will be able to do is with your camera.

Well first off a big thanks to the ADA and the awesome camp they put on every year for these kids. They do a fantastic job! Well we were able to get the whole family up this time including grandma. We all had a blast. Auggie won a pair of vortex diamondbacks at one of the raffles which was awesome! I'm proud of my boys, they put in a lot of work. Auggies not quite a die hard hunter. He likes it when it's easy and not so much when its not. He did put in much more work then expected but all of the ups and downs made him like hunting a little bit more than before. Even Caliche got up every morning at 4am to go hunt with his big bro and was with us every day of the hunt. Opening morning didnt go as planned so we ended up glassing some finger canyons and did get a chance at one. Unfortunately she only offered a neck shot so I told him we should not risk it. Day two didnt have any chance until the evening and we couldnt make the distance in time for the shot. Day three morning we got on some cows on a ridge about 300 yards away and got set up for the shot. He took a shot and missed. After she walked out of sight another cow walked into sight and I let him take another 2 shots and neither made contact. I knew something wasnt right. After getting back to camp I headed to go check the zero on the scope. Turns out the windage knob must have gotten bumped and rotated back to the wrong zero a whole turn. After taping it in place we went out for the evening and saw nothing. Monday morning we headed out and got on some cows. The biggest one was quartering a little bit and I told him to go for it. While lifting my binos to my eyes she must have started to turn as I heard the shot. I looked through the glass to see her staggering forward and trying to stay on all fours. Within 20 yards she was down. We marked her location and zipped back to get momma while giving her a few minutes to expire. Momma thought she was coming for pictures but I bamboozled her into helping with the skinning and quartering process. She handled it like a champ! I think I just may keep her. After packing her out we chilaxed for a few then headed out to fill his deer tag. We had a few chances at smaller bucks but he couldnt get the shots off quick enough. Second to last day we decided to sit a tank. Down the road we saw a big bodied 4x4 muley. It looked like he was gonna skirt the tank and go another direction. We sat for a second just in case and nothing so we gave chase. I told my younger boy to wait in the truck while we went after him. Well turns out we should have waited longer because he came in to drink while we were out looking for him. In the end we struck out on deer but at least we had a great trip and a cooler full of elk meat. Always great to be in the woods with your family. Good eats at the ADA youth camp! Babies first elk camp. Hot dogs n lolipops! Auggie and me. All the special ladies in my life Auggies new glass thanks to the ADA. Oh, and a photobomber.. One unlucky squirrel Camp visitor Ride to young in the back of the truck. I said no and was overruled my my mom. Whattaya gonna do? On the hunt... The big achievemnet! I helped! Savave axis 7mm08 139 sst did the job Before the gore.
