Cool Muley in the first pic
-
Ed, I'm told they are good eating but stink something awful as soon as you cut them open. Have you found that to be true?
-
This pretty much sums it up. I dont quite see it as 100% back down but still, it is necessary to be smart about the pics we post. Posting pictures of deer or even bloody pics is one thing, a "pile" of dead animals is a whole other story. A pile of dead animals depicts us as bloodthirsty not as conservationists. Think of it like this, we're all debating about ways to educate the public and increase hunter recruitment. Taking tasteful pics rather than distasteful ones is a small FREE way we can do that.

New to this game, could use some advice

Since you got the 15s and tripod really learn the technique. Dig up some threads on how to glass and where to glass etc. Also I always recomend taking Duwane Adams glassing class. It's money well spent. Ask him about food sources, water sources etc. He's already forgotten more then I'll ever learn and a heck of a nice guy. I took his class and it shaved years off of what I could have found out on my own. It has actually saved me money. Also figure out what type of terrain you want to hunt and what animal, Muley or Coues. Muley may be a little easier starting out but maybe not. I live in 35A, mostly rolling oaks and grassland so pretty stalkable terrain. Unit 23 though for example has mile wide canyons with thick nasty cover. Setting up mineral licks and sitting a blind in the summer for hours on end would be my approach there. Another thought, go get a couple leftover pig tags. Great practice for deer and sticking one will be a great confidence booster. If you get a tag in 35a, or 30b I can point you in a good direction. Good luck. Oh, and as far as how to make a move. Generally guys will glass them at first lite watch them until they bed and then make a move. Typically by then the thermal currents will be pushing the wind / scent uphill so the approach is go waaaaayy out of sight go around the hill behind them and come up and over on top of them. Having a device to mark there location like a gps is a HUGE help here. Also dont discount high foot traffic areas. I have two go to spots that have lots of trails with birdwatchers, tree huggers, mountsin bikers, hikers, hunters etc. Youd be surprised at how used they are to people going near them without bolting. One of the advantages is you can use the trails to quickly make a move much more quietly then you could without a trail. -
Any interest in a Rem 700 in 243?

They should have sad music in the background and show pictures of thirsty animals too. -

Seemed a reasonable price as well.

Cool first post! Super cool bull!

That's super sad. As a parent I can't think of anything worse.

Well after spending the morning up in Tucson at Bull Basin Archery fine tuning her bow, my wife and I went out on her first deer hunt. We had an area picked out where they travel each evening and I sat high to glass and watch if anything was coming her way. After coming back from a quick look down the other side I looked up to a deer running right by the tree she was under. Couple seconds later she texted me "I just fu***** missed." I went down and found her arrow with no blood on it. I told her I missed a whole bunch of times and that a clean miss is better than a bad hit. Well, that didn't stop her from crying. I felt bad but I think she's even more hooked now and even more determined. We're gonna try again tomorrow then I got to work till next weekend. Gonna get her her first deer yet!

Thought I would resurrect this old post. She had another chance in January and missed but I'm thinking success is just around the corner for her. Spent the last two days watching and gonna spend the next few as well. FEELING LUCKY! -
That's awful. Was it a car wreck or something?
-
Been in a river bottom in 35a last two days and zero pre rut activity that I've seen. But it's usually mid January for us. Photoperiod is spot on. Read a book where it mentioned an indoor facility with deer and they programmed the lights to simulate daylight. Had the deer drop horns twice in one year,if that's not photoperiod proof in don't know what is.

Wow that thing is cool! Guns are so fun!

Not necessarily a deal breaker, however you have to consider they have banker hours. Not always easy to get up there Monday through Friday 9-5. Sierra Vista, Douglass, Safford etc 1-2 hours minimum one way drive.

DYI is all well and good but that crap is time consuming. Don't know if it's a factor but I heard it was on FB that one of Jonathan's sons passed away. Not sure if that is true though.

That's how they getcha!

Congrats all around! Except for the ram.... What happened?

I already saw a couple on i10 and i17. They said something like Conserve and protect with a web address that I thought was wildlifehero.org but I tried looking and must have remembered it wrong. Think it was actually some sort of game and fish billboard though. -

I was thinking the same thing regarding the draw data. As well as finish whatever it it is they need to do with the online portals so we can have the family portals. Another service I'd happily pay for if need be. -
Good for you man! Adam is a great guy to have at your disposal.
