Taylor Gets a Truck (And I Get a Hunting Truck Until Then)
dmoto replied to lancetkenyon's topic in The Campfire
Nice truck. I traded in my 2008 FJ 4x4 6 speed MT for a 2016 4Runner Trail Premium a few months ago....I'm starting to miss the FJ. Great motor and unstoppable. Good choice on the Tacoma. -
It looks like that AZGFD hasn't updated their "Draw Results Progress" to read where they are at for the elk draw. Looking at the current pic on their site, it shows game animals from the Spring Draw.

Looks great. Nice job. I still have a few quail left in the freezer, I'll definitely have to try this.

Put in for javelina HAM for my first time and ended up pulling a tag. Headed down south with some buddies who have hunted this area for years. Hiked a ton on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Ran into a herd of 4 with two babies on Saturday afternoon hunting some pretty thick flats, immediately hit the J-13 call and they ended up doubling back. The larger of the 4 ended up turning broadside at 15 yards. Fired one shot and hit right in the shoulder. It turned and faced me with some grunts and teeth chatter. One more shot and it went down. Thanks again for the tips on ammo, worked like a charm. Great time for my first HAM hunt and I'll definitely be putting in again for next year.

Waterfowl Gun for next year
dmoto replied to Havasuhunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I was in the same predicament 2 years ago. I eventually decided on a Beretta A300 in Max-5. More specifically because I'm a lefty shooter. You can make adjustments to the stock and swap the safety to the left side. Great gun, lightweight and never a jam. I use it for ducks, quail, turkey and dove. Gunbroker.com had great prices, no tax. Small FFL fee. -
Hunting with Glocks and non hunting pistols(pics page 2)
dmoto replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Javelina
Any particular preferences in ammo for your .45? I'll out in 37B this weekend with my 1911. Looking for some recommendations for ammo. Otherwise, I was thinking Speer Gold Dot 230's. 230 gold dots should work great. I've killed a half dozen with Winchester 230 black talons with no issues. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. -

Princeton Tec Sync. Yes, the AAA batteries last a very long time. Lightweight, multiple brightness settings along with a red light setting.

+1 on the Nalgene flask

We did pretty good at Roosevelt years ago catching flatties when the water was up using waterdogs. Though I haven't used them in years. Kilmer's had them before they closed. Only place I know of has any out east is Liar's Korner. You also might want to call the bait shop at Jake's Corner or Hwy 188 Tackle.

I used a B of A card for deer, turkey and javelina. No issues, charges went thru just fine.

I was running a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser M/T 4x4 before I sold it in November and it had about 95k miles on it. At 30k miles, I ended up putting General Grabber AT2 tires on it. I hunt a ton of quail/ducks in the fall and tow a Champion 181 bass boat just about every weekend to the local lakes. It was my daily driver truck to work, probably did the same 70% pavement 30% off road/towing. I couldn't be more satisfied with the Grabber AT2. I will more than likely be putting the same tire on my 2016 4runner in the next few weeks. They held up great and had a ton of tread left when I sold my FJ. Tirerack.com has a pretty nice price on them right now. I ran a stock 17" rim on my FJ. When I originally purchased them, I actually bought them from a Chevy dealership out in Mesa who was running a buy 3 get 1 free deal. I think it was just over $800 mounted and balanced. I figured I'd give my input since the Tacoma and FJ are on very similar chassis, motors, etc.

Yes. Agreed. Dan and Joanne are great people. I've donated a bunch of fishing gear to them, knowing it's going to the right place.

Favorite "Non-Steak House" Restaurant in the Valley?
dmoto replied to rossislider's topic in The Campfire
Richardson's is fantastic. Hiro Sushi if you guys are into the raw fish thing. -
I also received mine yesterday. I thought the same exact thing....I have fleece sweatshirts that are thicker and half the price (at the $99 price). Seems to be very lightweight, but warm so far. I'm heading to Seattle next week and planning on bringing it to wear. I imagine that will give me a good idea with the wind and rain. But from the first look, glad I paid $99 rather than $400. Doesn't seem like a $400 jacket.

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered one. For $100 down jacket...figured it's hard to go wrong.

Agreed. Rosy has really gone downhill. I used to love launching the boat at Schoolhouse and flipping the trees back in the sticks. But that was 6-7 years ago and the ramp has been out of the water for a while. It seems like a good 5 fish bag there is maybe 12 pounds. Sure, there's still the 6# bass still swimming around, but they seem so far and few between. Now a days, I just head to Apache. Much better fishing anyways.

Quail Near Roosevelt Lake??

Any of the washes or creek beds off of A-Cross -
That's really the only way I like to do the T-day bird. Here's what I like to do on my Weber Smokey Mtn 22.5": Brine a 15# bird in a small/medium size cooler overnight. Water, 10# bag of ice, salt, brown sugar, cut up citrus, fresh thyme. Day of....fire up my smoker using the minion method with Kingsford blue bag and a few chunks of cherry wood. Get it to 300* - 325* and prep the bird Take bird out of the brine. Dry thoroughly and rub it down with either olive oil or butter. Liberally apply the rub of your choice. Put a few chunks of orange/lemon in the cavity of the bird. Put the bird on the smoker for 2.5 hours, then check the temp of the bird. Pull it when it gets to 160ish* Loosely wrap bird in foil, but back in a dry cooler to rest. Let rest for 30-45 min. After resting, carve the bird and enjoy. I'll be doing 2 birds this year, one on the smoker, one spatchcock in the oven.

Not necessarily hunting.....but at every bass tourney, it seems there's always a guy talking about dumping an 8 right at the boat with about 5 min to go until check-in. Almost died laughing when I heard that at some charity tournament at Bartlett a few years back.

Heading out east of the valley on Saturday morning. I've been out once this year and scratched out 3 birds, then was out of town. So, really looking forward to getting out there for a while.
