That's a nice buck. Hope I can find one like it this next week.

Nice. Gonna try to find a Juny Bull by the looks of it? Good luck

If you like glassing and can find any higher desert area with some type of water source somewhat close by, you will be able to find deer all over the unit in areas like this. There are several deer in the highest elevation parts as well, just not as good for glassing. When you see them in these areas you are usually fairly close because of the thickness. Which hunt did you get (Time of Year)?

Don't know if you saw the rear end on the largest pic of the buck you have posted there on the last pic, but almost looks like a muley rear end to me.

Being patient after the shot....
jgabler replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Just what I've seen and learned. Pooled blood within a body cavity starts to rot almost immediately, but do not let that make your decision to start tracking an animal too quickly after being hit. It isn't going to rot your meat as quickly. Last year my grandfather shot a bull right through the shoulder blade and stuck into the off shoulder @ 20 yards. My dad was with him and they were both sure of the shot placement, waited 1 hour and then started following the blood trail, which it was dark by then. They had good blood for about 40 yards and then started running out very quickly. They decided to back off and look first thing in the morning. I tried to convince them that with the shot placement and how much of the arrow broke off inside the bull, that he was dead by 5 hours and we should get our bright lights out and follow because my friend had just lost half of his elk 2 days before by leaving him over night (spoiled that quickly where blood pooled). They did not want to do this, and went tracking in the morning to find the bull 50 yards further from where they stopped the night before. Unfortunately 1/4 was missing due to coyotes, and the side that he was laying on was already starting to spoil from the pooled blood inside the cavity. As others have said, be sure of your shot, and I would recommend waiting at least an hour before starting to trail an animal as well, even if you see it fall over and think it is dead. Learn what different blood looks like and smells like from being hit in different parts of the body. I would also agree that a higher shot and further back shot would need to wait longer. I've seen a double lunged bull hit high still alive nearly 6 hours later and barely leaving a blood trail that could barely be followed. A liver and gut shot deer shot in the late evening still barely alive in the following morning. I also agree with trying to aim for where you want the shot to exit the animal. I am not saying that if you hit an animal, to start following it right after that 1st hour of waiting or within 4 hours so that the meat doesn't start spoiling. I am simply saying to do all the research you can to tell the difference between different types of blood on the blood trail you are following, to do the best you can at knowing where your shot placement occurred on the animal, to take a good shot, and practice. While following a blood trail during light hours, use your binocs to look in the direction the animal was traveling to see if you can see it from a distance before all of a sudden walking up on it. For me; double lungs or heart-1 to 2 hours 1 lung or high lungs 4-5 hours depending on blood trail at beginning Liver angled forward to lungs 7-8 hours Liver about 10 hours Gut shot 12 hours -
They are definately starting to rub the velvet off. Just starting to see a few bulls that pass through my yard near Vernon with velvet hanging. Man I'm gonna miss living there.

*HELP ME SCORE THIS BULL* @ i added a few pics for the skeptics
jgabler replied to justahunter's topic in Elk Hunting
In my opinion, let it fly. That's what the score would be for me. But a guess around 380-390. Awesome bull. -
Lets see your coues mounts
jgabler replied to Flash's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
You probably have an idea of what you want already, just had to throw this in. You should look at the picture on this sight from unit 6A. The guy has all of his mounts on the wall of his barn. Just about every pose you can find is on there. -
That sure is a nice lookin 2 x 4 if I've ever seen one. Congrats
-
That is an awesome deer. Congrats!

Yep, wedging that tree in his house for a pedestal was pretty tough. Next time we'll build the house around it. J/K. Yeah this is my first mount that I have done. I hope to get better and better the more I do. Thanks.

After working a little, studying everything I could, and looking at several pictures, i finally tried this out on my cousins Muley that he took in 33 last year. Tell me what you all honestly think about it. Some parts are kind of hard to see with the sunlight, sorry about that.

She seems to like everything right now, knows the difference between deer, elk, and other animals, is almost two, and I pray every day that she'll be my little hunting and fishing buddy as she grows up. With the skull of my archery bull this year.

jgabler replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Nice buck. Is it pretty common for big mulies up on the strip to be rubbed off already. Seams pretty early for deer beings that I am still seeing bulls with velvet. -
I will be in the Mesa-Tempe area on the 4th. 928-587-6020 is my cell #.

That is pretty freakin lucky. I have given up hoping that someone would know whoever stole my quad and trailer right out of my driveway while I was gone. At least that kid gave it back, and still had it. -
I don't have a picture of this pickup right now, but can get one if someone is interested. It is a 2001 F-350 4 door dually. It has the 7.3 liter Powerstroke in it with an auto tranny and 4-wheel drive. The Lariat edition with tan leather interior. White outer with a dark blue color on the very bottom. It has 120,000 miles on it, just good and broke in for a diesel. It runs well, just a little cold blooded. It is just too big for what I need a pickup for. If you are interested, all I want is for someone to pay it off or take over payments. Whatever works.

That's a pretty good sized javelina you got there. Congrats and cool picture with the background the way it is.

Congrats on a nice buck. One of these days I will go out and find a nice muley like that, but a 100 inch coues will be on the list until then.

Well, unfortunately I just found out that where I was going to go is 3 1/2 hours SE of Hermosillo. I think that it is still an opportunity of a lifetime, but I don't think I am going to go now since I will have a twelve hour drive down there, will only be able to hunt for a day and a half, and then another 12 hour drive home, if I was lucky and everything went well. I am just going to pull out the shooting sticks and go hunting here in Arizona now. I thank everyone for their help though. Thanks again.

I have been given the opportunity to go down to Mexico to hunt and was just curious to see what your opinions might be on traveling down there. My wife is scared to death of me going down there and is begging and pleading for me not to go because she doesn't want me to take the chance on not coming back. I was just wondering how safe you all think it is. I will be in the vehicle with three other guys, one of which will be the grandson of the guy who owns the ranch. I have talked with Amanda and will get the auto insurance that she recommended me to get, and will clean my vehicle of any ammunition since we will be using the rifles of the owner. I don't know for sure where it exactly is yet, just know it is near Hermosillo. Any advice that anyone else could give would be much appreciated. Thanks.
