Well I have put it off and put it off telling of my hunt on the Kiabab this year but here it goes. Mulie hunter and I went up on Sept 22nd and got there just in time for the rain. It rained the rest of the day and most of the night so we didn't get to hunt that day. We met up with some friends and camped/hunted with them with no success untill the Monday evening when one of our friends took a spike(12" to 14" long) off a tree stand at about 30yds. They had to leave the next day so at least one out of the two went home with something. Mulie hunter and I kept at it, working the water holes. They all seemed to come in after dark....I wonder why?. We had a close friend that his son was in the hospital with liver failure so we decide to go home early to pray for him. Our last time to hunt was Wed evening, after taking a scenic drive we were heading back to set up on the water hole when I happened to look down an old logging road and catch a glimpse of a meadow. We stopped to take a look and found lots of sign so we said, what the heck lets build blinds and stay here. Wasn't on my blind for more than 20 min before this spike walked in and gave me a shot at 30 yds.....missed like always. It ran towards Mulie hunters blind but stopped about 40 yards from me and then turned and came back to within 25-28 yds. This time the arrow hit its mark. After about a ten second dash through the forest it ran straight at me and died about 20 yds from me.

Congrats to the boys! now that is a way you learn how to hunt. none of this road hunting, just a lot of honest work and it all pays off.

Mulie hunter and myself took our kids and several others with us to the rim for their youth hunt and as he stated 3 out of 4 taged. This is my sons second deer in three years. We have been telling the kids how great the north rim is and they said it is better than what we said, and I guess words can't tell it all. I want to thank those that put on the youth camp, our kids really enjoyed it as did we. A lot of work went into it and there seemed to be a great turn out.

Been there done that, went under the belly and out the other side, how does a wire no bigger than an 1/8 inch get in the way -
azonie welcome to the site, sorry about the way a few responded to your request. If I knew something about that unit I would help you out, but unfortunately I don't. I don't post alot here but I follow the forum all the time and the info here is very helpful so don't give up on us yet.

Who doesn't wear camo when rifle hunting?
AZRDHD replied to ElSavior's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I wear camo whenever I'm hunting, I don't really think its needed during rifle season but Im a believer in it during bow season. It looks cleaner longer and I have had to fade into the desert to hide from UDAs and other not so nice folks in the past. -
Well I got the privilege of being close by when mulie hunter got his buck.......well lets say I was at the truck keeping it company. With my asthma it is hard for me to keep up with him. I did hear the shot and when there wasn't a second I figured he got one. Mulie hunter is a great hunting partner to have. I finally hiked up to the ridge he shot it from and between breaths yelled support.......like are you sure you hit it. He did a great job and is always a pleasure to hunt with.

Removing foxtails from fleece.
AZRDHD replied to bobbyo's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I'm with headache, I to have a fleece jacket in the same condition. My solution was to buy a new one -
Picacho Res has been dried up for a long time, thats old info. Try the cattle ponds you find out in the desert.
-
But I need to know the return policy on it!

I will be down there with my nephew, we will have four kids, two looking for their first kill and two looking for their second. Hope to see you there and happy hunting.
-
My son took his first mulie buck with a 243 and dropped it in its tracks.
-
Now thats a tale, what great hunting and spoting to see all that. Great pictures as well. Good luck on your NM hunt.
-
Grass is high and a lot of thistles to get in your socks and clothes so wear something that they can't get caught in. I have a fleece jacket and I'm still pulling them out. Otherwise its a nice location to hunt in.

Thats a nice looking buck and some kind of tail that you will be telling folks for a long time to come and that is what makes a trip. Some times its good and sometimes its bad but in a few years it will just be a great story. Congrats
-
I have to agree that the best way would be not to have a campfire, but on the other hand I think thats just part of the trip. I don't know about you all but thats one of the important parts of the trip for my boy, either starting the fire or sitting around it and watching the flames. So sometimes you have to lose alittle to gain alittle.

Shortpants and COOSEFAN's adventure
AZRDHD replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Thats a nice buck and a great story, I'm with Mulie hunter you could of sent some of the lesser ones our way. Were the UDAs in your food and supplies or did they bring their own?
