How do you guys combat the bugs while glassing? Not so much mosquitos but those little green or yellow ones crawling in your eyes ears and nose. Will deet keep them off or do you jimmy rig a net to wear while glassing. Never tried a thermocell. Ideas ? The bugs where I've been scouting the past few weeks are relentless.

Rossi I have had that same issue with my manfrotto head. Pop off the small plastic cover piece and tighten down that allen screw. Makes it nice and snug.

I use a manfrotto 290 carbon with the 700rc2 head. The tripod is a little bulky (only 2 extensions, but that makes it sturdy) and heavy if you're backpacking a lot, but I don't mind packing it 6 or 7 miles and it is very solid even if I need to stand up to glass. And I do find when I'm glassing all day that it is nice to stand up and glass every now and then. It's also nice to be able to pull off a road for a while and stand up to glass rather than trying to find a spot in the rocks to sit. I don't mind packing an extra pound or two if it means I can glass more effectively. Also the rc2 head is nice, and it's only about a pound.

I work between Safford and Solomon and we still have a big pile of hailstones sitting in our storm water containment today.

I was on my way back from scouting for my highly coveted leftover tag (saw more bears than bucks) and hit some pretty good rain by the fairgrounds. good thing I was in my truck or I woulda got swallowed in some of those low spots. luckily I didn't run into any of the hail and my house didn't see any either, I'm farther west. sounded like quite a bit of damage, I think a good number of the cotton crop around safford is a loss form what I heard. it sure made for a neat lightning show to watch on my drive home.

Shoot off sand bags, sled, stands, bi pod?
Hatchet Jack replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Long Range Shooting
I have wondered about this myself. I like to think of it as this... compare it to jumping as high as you can from standing on a concrete slab or jumping while standing on soft sand. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If you take away some of the reaction (i.e. your soft shoulder rather than a rigid lead slead) you're going to get slightly different velocities coming out of your barrel. That's just me thinking out loud. -
have you guys been to a Scheel's? I went to the one in salt lake, it's a cool store, top of the line stuff and the guys I talked to knew what they were talking about.

the popular units it's not going to make a difference but you can bet if I find a deer honey hole I can hunt with a leftover tag I'm not going to announce it from the rooftops.

From what I understand, yes. The Cabelas Instinct Euro line of optics are Meopta Meostars just rebranded by Cabelas. Only difference is the rubber housing.

only been to Greeley once, didn't seem bad to me. The goose hunting was phenominal. sorry i know that's not much help but you can count it as one point in favor of moving there.
-
Who out there wears em? Anybody have a snake gaiter they like besides the turtle skins? My budget is getting tighter, looking at the ones sportsmans or cabelas carry.

I can't imagine hunting like this. Competing with multiple other people for a chance to hunt a quarter acre spot.

"How did I live without it?" Hunting Gear
Hatchet Jack replied to rossislider's topic in Other Hunting Gear
Double crossed shooting sticks. I've now killed my last 2 bulls using these, and they weren't close shots either. Light weight and support both ends of your gun. I got mine off amazon I think they are made by high and heavy outdoors or something like that. I also recently upgraded from a Vortex high country tripod/ball head to a carbon manfrotto tripod w/ a manfrotto fluid head. Makes a night and day difference in glassing and I can also glass standing up which does come in handy. -
You couldn't pay me to live in that house in the middle of DC. I'll take my 1500 sq ft house where I can see the mountains and drive a few minutes if I want to see deer.

str8 shot you just made my day. Been way too long since I've listened to that song.

Also try American Buffalo and Meat Eater the book. Pretty good stuff, i like his style.

First chance to hunt Coues
Hatchet Jack replied to gonhunting247's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Congrats on the tag. I actually glassed a couple decent bucks this morning in 31. Rough country, pretty good amount of deer. Get ya some good boots and clear glass/tripod. Good luck -
30A October-Anybody else?
Hatchet Jack replied to Hatchet Jack's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
from what i've studied so far, the lack of access doesn't seem that big of a deal if you are willing to walk 6 or 8 miles. there are a handful of access points that give you a number of options to backpack in.
