    Good coues rifle scope?

I really like the fine duplex on Leupolds and the free custom dials. Put one on my 6.5 creedmoor. http://swfa.com/Leupold-65-20x50-VX-3i-30mm-Riflescope-P91629.aspx

    None Vocal Unit 23

Same....Had 1 talking to us last Friday but he stayed put. Shut up around 5:30 AM. We hiked up to him and ran into a small flock, jake and 4 hens. Couldn't get a shot. Saturday morning we heard 1 gobble. Literally 1 gobble and then the snow came. We bailed. That's our 3rd turkey hunt in 23, all unsuccessful. Tuff unit. Canyons. Unless someone wants to hook a junior hunter up I Prolly won't drag my son up to 23 again. Grr

    Clothing prejudice

A friend shot his couse last year in a $700 Kuiu outfit from 600+ yards, he swears by it - Deer never saw him. (sarcasm) Now turkey hunting is a different thing and we will be draped in walmarts finest realtree chasing birds this weekend.

    10x42 vs 12x50

If you already have viper 10x50 what upgrade would you expect from 10x42‘s? Just my opinion, I have yet to experience challenging light conditions while hunting in AZ so I just can’t justify the need/ cost for the top of the line glass. I hunt with a guy who uses 15x56 swaros and he’s never happy when I spot deer first with my cheaper 12x50 glass. And he can't freehand them. A compact spotter might be a solution for you. Ultimately everyone’s eyes are different and you just need a system that works for you.

    Never gave up!

My December archery muley isn’t huge but it was a huge accomplishment for me. My first deer kill with a bow. I’ve been at it since the December 2014 archery season and estimate I spent 40 days in the field, 20+ failed stalks, missed a giant the first time I let an arrow fly and this being only the second arrow ever shot at a deer I finally connected, double lunged him, from 82 yards. My son and I spent the morning hiking into a spot we had seen some other bucks. Only found 1 and made a long hike to try and cut him off. Never saw that buck again. Out of water and about noon we decided to head back to the truck and try 1 more spot. Hiking over to the canyon my son spotted a deer not even 100 yards from us. A small couse buck. I made an easy little stalk on him and got to 50 yards, full draw, just need him to step out left from an ocotillo. I reset and he bolted 2 canyons over. Archery mistake number …. My son said let’s go take a look and when we set up in the other canyon I spotted my mule deer bedded down at the bottom of the canyon in the thick nasty stuff with 4 does. I left him on the binos and headed down. Took an hour to get to my marker trying my best to stay quiet. It wasn’t enough. I see 3 does bust out. Quickly I move up the side of the canyon 5 yards or so to get a better view. He’s still there with 1 doe. They’re looking my direction. I literally lay flat against the slope for 20 minutes and let them calm down. Peeking my head up every so often I finally range that doe at 82 yards. I guess the buck will follow her and when he hits that spot I need to make my move. I got to 1 knee, drew, got my anchor and schwack! Total pass through. These new PSE bows are so fast and so accurate. I don’t even have an 80 yard pin but I know my bow- I also know I got lucky. Double lunged. He dropped within 50 yards. I can see my son up the canyon jumping up and down. What a feeling to finally kill a deer with my bow. Thanks to my buddy Jason for helping me get that deer out. Can’t wait for January. Thanks for letting me share the story and a few pics.

    Never gave up!

Thanks all. Quick question. I took the hide and was thinking about getting it tanned but Wellers quoted me $225?!?! Is that the going rate? Any suggestions?

    Cool find!

Very nice find. I found a small ram skull this year. Called G&F and they didn't seem too alarmed and said I could keep it.
  13. Good morning CW forum. Newbie elk hunter. My son killed his first couse deer year and has the 22N Nov Bull Elk hunt next week. I have the big responsibility now of fostering my sons love for the hunting but I have never hunted elk. I call Payson my second home and know the area well. We have spent time in the unit scouting and I have talked to some locals that were actually quite excited and very generous to help out a youth hunter. I guess my concern is what to expect next week. The areas I have in mind look gnarly. I’m not sure packing out a bull elk will be possible. I’m also concerned that they may have a heavy concentration of other hunters. Did I overlook some easier terrain for a father son DIY hunt? We are not trophy hunting. In fact, I think we may be better of with a smaller bull but I really do want him to be successful or at least have an opportunity to be. Is the late hunt just about the nasty cuts, canyons and draws or does some of the high mesa type terrain still hold some bulls? Thanks for any support, ideas, or feedback and hopefully we have a story to share soon.

DIY Father Son 22N Bull Elk Hunt

Thx all, appreciate the feedback. Sounds like we can expect the exact experience we are after, a rugged elk hunt.
  15. Just wanted to share my sons first buck story. We’ve been lurking here, looking at pics, and staying motivated for 2 years and finally have a story to share. No success on his first hunt but this year’s Jr hunt in a new unit had us on bucks at noon opening day. Friday was quite windy so we had to wait for a buck to come in close enough for a decent shot. We had a spike, a fork and horn, a forky, and a 2x2 in the canyon. We’d have been happy with any of them. The spike and 2x2 came out of a thicket within 500+ yards, did a little sparring and the 2x2 walked into 300 yard range at 5 PM. Took a while to figure out how to get a shot over the grass and pointed into the setting sun but my son decided to take the binos off the tripod and use it as a rest. Lined up a shot and that’s when I saw my son go into kill mode. He got assertive and focused. “I’m taking the shot dad!” As you other parents know this was a special moment. First buck will forever be in our memories. We had a friend help with this hunt. I know he is a private person and doesn’t want to be mentioned but think credit is due. We are thankful. Enjoy the pics. We turn our focus to late rifle bull elk now. Lucky kid, drew his first year putting in. We experienced chigger bites from glassing all day near tall grass. If you have a warm Oct hunt in tall grass area it might be something you want to keep in mind.
