  1. Two boats came away with big paydays at the Oregon Tuna Classic and Deep Canyon Challenge. OTC is a fantastic series of events, where all proceeds go to benefit Oregon Food Bank and Ducks Unlimited. The Deep Canyon Challenge was the first event of the series and was held in Ilwaco, Washington. Team Duckworth came away with a payday of $18,580, including a $5,000 bonus for winning the Garmin 5 Grand Giveaway. They dominated the field by weighing in five tuna, weighing a total of 152.19 pounds, and also caught the tournamentâs largest fish at 36.48 lbs. The anglers who fish the OTC series are very close-knit, so taking home one of the most prestigious titles is about more than just winning. Itâs about the bragging rights. Several weeks later, many of the same teams reconvened for the Oregon Tuna Classic in Garibaldi, Oregon. This time around, with the help of their GPSMAP 840xs, âTeam Oppurtunatyâ outfished 64 other boats on their way to the winnerâs circle and almost doubled their payday after taking into account their winnings from the Garmin 5 Grand Giveaway. While the fishing was tough for many boats due to rougher seas than normal, over 3,000 pounds of tuna were caught and donated to the Oregon Food Bank, and the auction raised more than $50,000 for charity. Good luck to the winners of the Oregon Tuna Classic and Deep Canyon Challenge, as both teams qualified for the 2016 Offshore World Championship, which will be held in Costa Rica next April. 2. For the first time ever, you have the ability to stream your action camera through the chartplotter on your boat. All you need is a Garmin VIRB X/XE action camera with a Class 10 or higher microSD card and a GPSMAP 7400/7600 or 8000 series1 chartplotter. Make your fishing and boating videos much more interesting with compelling G-Metrix overlays such as boat speed, water depth, and water temperature. This information is sent to your camera directly from NMEA 2000 connected devices on the boat. Connecting your devices is a very simple process. To begin, you will need to make sure your chartplotter is updated to version 5.60 or later, then follow the steps below. From Chartplotter: Home --> Settings --> Communications Select Wi-Fi Network Turn Wi-Fi ON If you donât already have a password, you will need to set one up. From VIRB X/XE: Menu --> Wi-Fi --> ON Select Join Select Chartplotter Network Name You will see a popup that prompts you to enter a password. Select YES. Enter Password Now your VIRB X/XE should be connected to your chartplotter and youâre ready to capture your fishing trip in a new and exciting way. For a different perspective on your videos, record the screen of your chartplotter by using the free Garmin Helm mobile app, available for download in the App Store, or Google Play. Note that recording is only supported on Apple devices. This is such a cool feature because you can run Panoptix on one half of the screen, plus your VIRB and your mapping, 2D sonar or DownVü on the other half. You can now watch the fish eat your lure LIVE at the exact same time as youâre setting the hook. How cool is that? 3. By: Clark Wendlandt As we all know, bass fishing has its ups and downs. Those once-in-a-lifetime days on water are just that because there are so many different variables that need to be lined up just right. However, when it comes to the summer/fall transition, sometimes it can feel like youâre not doing anything right, but you arenât alone. Fishing this time of year is downright tough just about anywhere you go. Back home in Texas, the fish start moving to deep water at the beginning of June, and throughout July the fishing stays pretty good. As time goes on, the water quality will play a big part in the bite. In August, things get flat out tough because the water quality down deep isnât very good, so youâll start to see some fish moving shallower and towards the backs of creeks as early as mid-August. Thatâs when they begin the transition, but in August and September, itâs still flat out hot in Texas. We will see the fall transition happening all the way into October. You will have the opportunity to catch some very good fish this time of year, but as those fish start transitioning to the backs of creeks, you will notice that the baitfish will be pretty small, so youâll want to fish with small crankbaits and small topwater baits. Also try fishing around creek channels, but stick with shallower running baits, instead of the deep plugs like you would typically throw in June and July. Thereâs still a lot of schooling action that happens in late summer/early fall, so pay attention to whatâs going on. You can get on some really good schooling fish early in the morning, so make sure to have a topwater bait tied on. 4. We are making improvements to our forums! In addition to working to provide better spam solutions to reduce the intrusion that spam causes all of us, we will also be making some adjustments to help you better identify which sub-forums are community-moderated. Part of these exciting changes is that we will be taking a more active role in moderating select sub-forums to ensure you have the information you need. To help with this effort, we will be closing some older, less-active sub-forums. Theyâll be archived, so you can still search them for any info you may need. Moving forward, it will be much clearer when a sub-forum moves from Garmin-moderated to community-moderated. Weâd also like to take a moment to remind you of the other great support channels we offer our customers. 5. Garmin epix is the ultimate watch for the outdoorsman and no one should be hitting the woods this fall without it. It has a plethora of built-in applications to not only help increase your chance at success, but will also help keep you safe and not lost. Here are a few of our favorite features available on epix to use while hunting. And because itâs a watch, itâs easy to glance at when you need it, and out of the way when you donât. Barometer Prepare for incoming storms by monitoring barometric pressure right from your wrist. Set storm alerts for when the barometric pressure changes a certain amount over a user-specified period of time. Barometric pressure is also an indication of fish and wildlife movement and feeding, so you can use that to your advantage. Built-in GPS & TOPO 100K Maps Make sure you donât lose your bearings with the built-in GPS with TOPO 100K maps. Easily pan and zoom on the high-resolution color touchscreen, mark and navigate to waypoints, or follow your track back to your vehicle. Offering 8 GB of built-in memory, you can load up on detailed mapping such as TOPO 24K, BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, LakeVü HD, and much more. Hunt & Fish App With the Hunt & Fish App, available from the Connect IQ Store, you can view the peak hunting and fishing times based on solunar tables. Just chalk it up as another tool in your arsenal to increase your chance of success. Ballistics App Calculate long distance shots with the Ballistics App from the Connect IQ store. With customizable data fields such as distance to target, wind speed and direction, shot angle, scope height from bore, click value, zero range, and the muzzle velocity, drag function, and ballistic coefficient of the cartridge you are using. After you are done setting all of your variables, hit start and it will calculate exactly how many clicks you need to adjust your scope, along with the drop and drift of the bullet in inches. If that isnât enough, it will even tell you how long it will take the bullet to reach your target. Head to the Connect IQ Store to download the Ballistics app. VIRB Remote Capture precious memories of your hunt with the Garmin VIRB XE action camera. Use epix as a remote to take photos with your VIRB and to start and stop recording on up to six cameras, from up to 10 meters away. This is a great feature, especially if you are hunting from a treestand and have cameras set up above and below you.
