The area is very tight, I will agree with you on that, especially with all of the private lands and a number of roads everywhere in the unit. Not much wilderness and quiet.

Hi all, I have a brother-in-law who lives up past Camp Verde and his area is smack in the middle of the OTC elk hunting area. I'm sure interested in trying it out. Anyone else thinking about doing this? I know that Alamo is another area, but I couldn't imagine trying to pull one out of there.

Fellow hunters: This came across my FB today. This is a very tragic shooting where a NM guide was wounded protecting his clients and his family: https://plus.google.com/105428562764060153399/posts/3FoC4MuH8kE?sfc=true News story: http://www.cbs7.com/content/news/409992435.html

Although I've been up to the unit mostly on camping and deer hunting trips, I saw elk everywhere. In all honesty, I'd be happy with just a spike for a meat hunt.

Any chance for a little help?

Didn't catch my limit, but after 20 years of not hunting dove, I'd say it was pretty successful. You can see the aftermath (dinner) in the form of bacon-wrapped jalapeno dove poppers. Good times!

Can't thank you guys enough for the help. The terrain features are different than Idaho, but being up there, the elevation and grade of the hills are going to be similar. +1 on the gutless method; I wouldn't even imagine hauling out a bull elk in that terrain. I'm going to have to start rifle training at the 1000 yrd mark. I do have a .308 so I know it's possible...but dang. Thanks guys!

Thanks for the tips! Not searching for the honey hole; I just don't want to load up on heavy gear that I don't need. Ounces=pounds, pounds=pain.

First time drawing a bull tag here in AZ. I've hunted elk in Idaho and last year for mulies (to no avail). I've been camping in this area a lot over the past five years, and I'm pretty familiar with the areas east of the 87. Well, I'm gearing up for the hunt. I have a lot of questions, but I can probably narrow the field here: 1. Game cameras--I see a lot of brush area north of the Control Rd and I don't see cameras being useful. Should I bother? 2. Shooting sticks--useful for this terrain? 3. I have an old military ruck sack with a metal pack frame. Would this be good for packing meat out? Well, that's all! I'm going scouting in two weeks, but I don't want to bring the kitchen sink if I don't have to. Thanks all!
