Your buddy will have the opportunity to kill a record bood buck, either Mule deer or Coues. Which hunt did he draw, bow or rifle? Either way there is glassable country and there are areas you can't see 5 yards. Do some scouting and you will find what you are looking for. Kevin

Aren't choppers cool! The only one I ever rode in was from Young to a fire in the Sierra Anchas. Not as slow as your ride but definately a powerful scouting tool. Kevin

I'm trying to find a good bullet for handloading for my 300 Win mag. I currently use a Nosler Partition and have been dissatisfied with them fragmenting at velocities above 3000 ft/sec. Has anybody used Hornady Interbond or any other bullet for that matter that will stay together and not destroy half a Coues buck? Kevin
-
I hunt with a 300 Win. Mag., not because its the only rifle I have, but because in my opinion you can never have to much gun! Your 30-06 is an excellent cartridge. If you want a flatter trajectory, try some 125 grain bullets out of it. Even factory loads with this bullet exceed 2900 fps. Good luck. Kevin

As a non resident, I am encouraged by your posts. I think that most of you would go out of your way to help me out if I were in need. I would do the same for you, whether in your state or mine. I will be hunting AZ coues deer this fall. I sure don't expect anyone to tell me where to find deer or help me kill one. That is why I hunt. I'll do it myself, thanks. However, if my old POS 79 Ford takes a dump, I sure would appreciate a hand getting it back to camp. I hope to meet some new people this fall. I've always enjoyed that aspect of hunting. Never have I hunted that I didn't meet someone new and enjoy the comeradery that developed. We all have something in common afterall. Have a great hunt and good luck! Kevin

Gray Hawk, The dates are pretty variable depending on unit. The only units with Coues deer for rifle hunts are Nov. 3-5, or Nov. 10-14. Bow Season is Aug. 28-Sept. 16 and Jan 8-16. Muzzleloader is Sept. 27-Oct. 3. NMG&F's web address is www.wildlife.state.nm.us All of the specifics on dates and unit stuff is on there. Good luck. Lark, I'm glad to see you have settled down a little. You're probably a nice enough guy when you're not eatin' gunpowder for breakfast. I hope the threats you have made are idle and that you will allow a non-resident to enjoy his/her hunt. Thanks. By the way, how different are the ballistics between your 270 and your sons 270WSM? Kevin

Deer will be draw hunts for rifle, no info on bow. The biggest suprise is they are going to spit whitetail from mule deer!
-
The biggest difference is that we unit 23 and 16 have fewer Coues than most areas in AZ and they have a lot more trees. Glassing is still effective in some areas but for the most part, where our deer live it is thick. The good news is that if you aren't picky, Mule deer can be taken (if you can't find a Coues buck) untill next year when the bag limit will change to either/or. 23 probably has better Coues population than 16. Good luck. Kevin

The license is $190 for a non-resisdent. You can buy the tag online from the G&F or from any license vedor (Walmart) when you get here. Most of the Coues deer in NM are in scattered pockets and several days of scouting should be planned if you are going to be successful. Good luck and maybe I can help out more when the time comes. In New Mexico, 15-20 years ago, we were only elgible every other year for the elk drawing. I assume it changed to our current system because of the increase in the elk herd not because of another law suit. Perhaps you are on to something. Kevin

Nice shed. I grew up hunting the Burros and can't wait to draw a tag in there. I know there are several 130 class bucks in there.

Treestandman, Tikka is a subsiderary of Sako. They are a nice rifle for the money and very accurate out of the box. My nephew shoots a 7mm-08 Tikka and I have been very impressed with it. Kevin

Yep!

Nice! Do you know anyone that drew? An old friends son who live in Tyrone is the only person I know that drew. He'll tag a good buck!

As a non resident (New Mexico) I am appalled at what some of you so called sportsman have threatened on this site. I only hope that if I draw a tag and run into one of you tire slashers-in your face-piece of my mind hot heads that you keep in mind that someday you might desire the opportunity to hunt Dall sheep or moose or carribou or some other animal that doesn't exist in AZ. It might be that someone in that state might not appreciate you there and ruin what may be a once in a lifetime experience for you. As it is, I work hard for the money I earn to hunt. I work extra hours at my regular job, I take on extra jobs, whatever it takes to hunt several hunts either here or in Colorado or Arizona. I'm sure that some of you on this board hunt New Mexico and probably other states, so why the anger towards those of us that enjoy your great state? Be angry at the situation and the instigators, not the rest of us that you might actually like if we weren't non residents. I agree that this situation sucks. I don't have a problem with the cap there and I don't think I should have an even chance at drawing one of the premier tags. However, I don't think I ought to have to watch over my shoulder or guard my camp if I do draw. I get kind of squirrely when I'm paranoid! Thanks to those of you like Rembrant, I appreciate your collected thoughts and your voice of reason. Kevin

TAM, Amanda brings up a good point about an AZ summer day. Do you think their preference changes with the seasons or moon phases?
-
No luck here either. Anyone draw the Burros or 27? Come on AZ! Kevin

According to the Albuquerque Journal, results will be posted tomorrow. Not suprisingly, there were a record number(over 106,000) applications this year. Good luck to everyone! Kevin

What units did you all put in for?
Kevin replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Dec unit 27/28 1st, Nov unit 29 2nd, Nov unit 28 3rd, and way to many to mention in New Mexico, but Burro Mt hunt is the one I want. Kevin -
I'm not sure why it was changed. Until last year we found out this time of year (2nd week of June). Last year it was the last week of June and I assume it will be this year but the regs say not until July. What I don't understand is why it takes us from the last week of April until even now to get the results and post them! Good luck to those of you who applied over here! Kevin

On-Line application deadline extended
Kevin replied to BACKCOUNTRY's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'm right there with you guys. Pass the prilocec please. I got my application in (I think) but it took like 2 hours while the computer chugged away. I had to wait until after midnight to get on the system in the first place! That will teach me to wait for my buddy to make up his mind at the last minute. Next time I'll apply the first day its online! -
Got 2 digitals done
Kevin replied to galiuro mountain man's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Mountain Man, Which digital camera did you use on your current set up and which are you going to use on this small one? If you can build it 2.5X4" you should be able to hide it just about anywhere! Thanks for the info. -
My S&W .41 Remington Magnum does a number on Javelina. If the opportunity ever presents itself (close shot) I would like to try it on other big game.

I've hung around this site now for 6 months or so and have been bow hunting Coues deer for 3 years. I have learned an incredible amount already and anticipate helping newbies out some day. I make my living in Las Cruces, New Mexico as a Research specialist at NMSU. Looking forward to hunting Arizona this fall with an old friend.

Burro Mountains Unit 23
Kevin replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Has anyone heard how the archery season in the Burros went? I don't know but one guy that hunted it and he only hunted the first weekend with no luck. I'd like to hear if anyone was successful. Thanks, Kevin
