    Base layer question

I think the key to getting cold was the sweating on the uphill hike. I don’t hike into areas with base layers on. I’ll hike in with just a T shirt on and no base layer under my pants. I’ve even hiked in shirtless. This is even if temps are in the 20’s. If I am hiking hard, the exercise keeps me plenty warm. When I get to a glassing spot, I’ll let myself cool down and stop sweating completely. I then strip down, add base layers and glass. If I move to another glassing spot and know I’ll be hiking hard and sweating again, I strip down again. I do a lot of my hunting in Wyoming where the wind is brutal. Sweaty clothes and wind with a little chill is no good. I am not sure there is a base layer made that will keep you warm once you’ve sweated in it and stop moving.

    Leupold Alumina Covers?

I use them on one of my hunting rigs with a VX6. I really like them. Good peace of mind. They keep rain and dust off the scope and are quick to open if you have to make a quick shot. I use Butler Creek caps on my other VX6 and to be honest, they work just as good and are a lot cheaper.

    Just a little overkill

Bad butt. What caliber and projectile made that hole? Doubting that was a .50 BMG.

    Swarovski EL 12x50

I would say most of my glassing is done with a tripod, probably 80-85%. I have the Outdoorsmans medium tripod with the pistol grip. That said, I do hand hold as well. This is mostly if I am on the move to a new glassing spot or giving a quick look into an area before I hike through.

    Swarovski EL 12x50

For those of you that have made the switch to the EL 12x50’s, do you find it difficult to hand hold these? I am currently using Vortex Razor 12x50’s and think I am ready to upgrade my glass. I think the Razor 12x50’s are a little much to hand hold and wondering if the same would hold true for the Swaro’s; or, is the fact that they are better optics going to help with that. Because I have been getting into backpack hunting, I really don’t want to carry a bunch of different optics so I can save weight and bulk in the pack. Thanks for any feedback.
  10. Just like the title states. Tell me what bino harness you like, pros and cons, etc. I was using a Sportsman's sling style with my 8x32 Steiners. I am looking for something with a protective case as I will now be wearing 12x50's around my neck. Light weight would be preferable.

    Backpack Trip Suggestions??

My stepson’s mom was having some MRI’s on her neck and back for some issues she was having with her spine. The MRI’s revealed a growth on her adrenal gland. There are some early thoughts that it may be cancerous, but more testing needs to be done. Regardless of what the test results are, the growth will need to be removed. My stepson is really worried and tore up about it, but trying to be tough and not talk about it. I’d like to take him on a backpacking trip to get him away for a long weekend. I am looking for a high elevation spot to do a 3 day backpack trip. It would be really nice if we could hike to a remote lake or pond and possibly do some fishing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate any advice.

    Backpack Trip Suggestions??

Thanks for all the replies. I have been looking at several of those options. I think we are going to hike down to the south end of Chevlon. It gives us a great option to fish and should be able to stay away from people on the south end....hopefully. Before I posted for suggestions I was looking real hard at Mt. Baldy and would still like to check it out. Good news is, I bought my stepson a bunch of his own backpacking equipment earlier today, so we are going to start making this a regular thing. Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

    Backpack Trip Suggestions??

Anywhere within a 5 or 6 hour drive from the valley would be great. That most likely keeps me in state. High elevations as it will still be hot. Planning this early September.

    Lets talk boots

I should be picking up my boots next week. I’m gonna swap out the insoles. What insoles are you guys running? Is it worth going custom orthotics? My feet have really high arches.

    Lets talk boots

Just went to Ross Outdoors for my first time. Really nice shop and really helpful staff. I went in with the intent to try on the Lowa TIBET GTX standard height for sizing, then have them order the Tibet GTX High. After walking around in the standard height Tibet, I can’t imagine needing any more ankle support. Ross Outdoors ordered me a pair of 9.5 EE. Look forward to breaking these in.

    Monday Check in

Ive been at it pretty hard lately. My Wyoming hunts are now less than 2 months away. Ive been working on cardio on the stair machine pictured and a treadmill. Workouts have been fairy consistently as follows: Monday: 45 pounds on my Outdoorsmans Atlas Trainer doing 20 minutes on the stair machine pictured followed by 20 minutes on a treadmill set on an incline. Follow this up with chest and triceps workout. Tuesday: swim laps freestyle, currently at 2,600 yards Wednesday: repeat Mondays cardio followed by biceps and back workout Thursday: 2,600 yards swimming Friday: repeat Mondays cardio followed by full leg workout Saturday and Sunday: swimming if I am up to it, otherwise rest days. Before my hunts, Id like to get my cardio days up to 30 minutes on the stair machine followed by 30 minutes on an incline treadmill with 70 lbs on the Atlas Trainer. Id like to get my swimming up to 3,600 yards. I have been watching what I eat as well. I am not seeing a lot of weight loss, likely due to muscle gain, but I am definitely feeling stronger and slimming up. Started in mid June at 225 lbs, down to 208 lbs.

    Lets talk boots

Looking at pulling the trigger on something real soon myself. Looking at either Crispi or Lowa. A little torn on whether to go insulated or not. I hunt in Wyoming and Arizona, so my temps vary greatly. Cold feet sucks, so thinking I’ll go with 200 gr. insulation and deal with a little extra foot warmth when it is hot. I’d like to hear what others are doing regarding insulated vs. uninsulated.

    AZGFD Ammunition Testing Event Today

I am working with the Cutting Edge Bullets to see if I can find some accurate loads. The CE Bullets don’t give up much in BC’s and they are an all copper bullet. I’m all for not having lead fragments in my meat if there is an accurate, high BC option. I have a really accuarate load in my 7 SAUM with the Barnes 145 LRX. That bullet performed amazing on one antelope at 322 yards and another at 533 yards last year.

    SIG BDX System

Pretty interesting system: https://www.sigsauer.com/products/electro-optics/bdx/riflescopes/ Range your target and hold on fur, no dialing. Relying on electronics may be the only real issue. Anyone have any experience with this?

    SIG BDX System

Prices are great in my opinion. Not sacrificing on weight as I think they come in at about 23 oz. Next year they will have more scope offerings, so hopefully a 3-15x44 or similar. Right now that 4.5-14x44 is a little tempting.

    Loading Barnes Bullets?

Agree with this. My load with the 145 LRX for my 7 SAUM is running 3,200 FPS. It is definitely a hot load. I am currently playing around with the Cutting Edge Bullets. They have much higher BC’s than the Barnes, although they are expensive ( cost is not much of an issue for a hunting rig though).
