Next year I think I am gonna have a .300 Norma Mag built. That will be my future elk rifle.
-
Ive been following this but I decided Im not going back 8 pages to find out, but what was your max range with this light build? If your only maxing out at 500 yards the 150's should do great. If your wanting to reach out past that with a light build (which makes it harder to shoot long range) maybe load it up with the 162's better BC. Just my thinking That is why I am rethinking using the 162's. I don't plan on shooting past 600. The 150's should be as good as the 162's to that distance. This will be my rifle for my cow elk tag this year and the extra grains would be nice on elk.....but it won't matter much with shot placement. I watched my buddy whack a cow elk last year shooting a .264 Win Mag with 130 grain bullets at 500 yards, so the 150's will be plenty of juice.

Hopefully I will have some time to work up loads this weekend so I can hit the range this weekend. Things have been a little crazy at home. Still debating between the 162 and 150 ELDX. I have plenty of both. The 150's will give me a little more seating depth flexibility with the short Model 7 action and still allow the rounds to feed, but the 162's have the better BC's. I think I'll load for the 162's first and see how that goes. I gotta keep the rounds at about 2.825 to feed.

Back up. Make an offer

Pack is in excellent condition. I have added 1 hip pouch to each side of the waist. It has a large water bladder I will include. Last year I used it to haul out 1/2 of a quartered mule deer buck plus the head, my hunting gear and rifle. The pack handled all of this with ease. $200. I am in East Mesa.

338 Lapua Ackley Improved Build
Cell4soul replied to jwhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Heck of a nice rifle.....looking forward to see how it shoots. -
I want to give a shout out to Brad at Phoenix Custom Rifles. He worked through some issues with the HS Precision Stock and this build being on a Model 7 action using short mags. Short mags are known for feeding issues and it doesn't help this was on a Model 7 action. He was extremely informative during the bedding process. It shows that he truly cares about the end result of the rifles he works on. PCR will definitely be getting my business on a future build.

Rifle is done. A photo of the completed rifle is below. Build specs as follows: - Trued Remington Model 7 action - heavy recoil lug - Timney Calvin Elite trigger set at 2.5 lbs - Proof Research barrel chambered in 7 mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum - APA muzzle brake - HS Precision Stock -Talley light weight rings - Leupold VX-6 Rifle is at right at 8 lbs all up with scope and rings. I will start load development next weekend using Norma brass, H4831SC powder and Hornady 162 ELD X bullets.

Remington Model 700 Long Range
Cell4soul replied to Cell4soul's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I would probably rebarrel eventually anyways to something with an 8 twist so I could shoot the 212 ELD-X. This rifle could be rebarreled, have the action trued and bed the action and you would still be around $1,500 all up for a pretty dang good rifle. -
Remington Model 700 Long Range

I am seriously considering one of these rifles. I am broke due to my custom build and upgrading a lot of equipment this last off season, but hard to pass up on that deal. I'd be looking at a .300 Win Mag. -

Pack is for sale

Rifle is at PCR. I should have it back and ready to do load development in about 2 weeks.
-
Talked to Keith at PCR. Gonna drop off the barreled action and stock tomorrow. He said it shouldn't take more than a week or so to complete. I really appreciate the advice.
-
I will contact PCR today

The rifle is in my possession and I just received the HS Precision Stock. The stock needs to be opened up a little for the recoil lug and barrel channel and I would like to have the action bedded. Does anyone know where I can have this work done where it won't take months to get the rifle back?

Sounds delicious....post some pics of the finished product.

I have been toying with the idea of selling my truck, getting rid of my company car and picking up a mid-size pick up. My truck is a 2006 Dodge Power Wagon with 75,000 miles. If you don't know about Power Wagons, do some research. They come with a lot of really nice features straight from the factory. The truck is based off of a 3/4 ton. Some of the options include factory lockers front and rear, a factory Warn winch built into the bumper, 1 ton axle shafts, 4.56 gear ratio, throttle control when driving in 4 low, a reinforced frame, factory lift, factory rock rails and Alcoa forged aluminum wheels. I am sure there is more that I am forgetting. I upgraded the factory lift to a 2.5" Carli lift. The truck is on 37" Cooper STT's with 75% tread left, including a full size spare. I have upgraded the ball joints to Dynatrac, which are for extreme duty and beefy as heck. I have changed the factory radio to a Pioneer Apple Car Play. I would be looking for $20,000. Here are a couple of pics:

Pack is still for sale. This is a great all around pack.

My buddy that is building the rifle is in Casper, WY. He is bringing the rifle to another buddy's grand opening party at the Wapiti Lodge just outside of Cody. So I will be picking it up in Wapiti.
-
I will let you know how the Timney Calvin Elite shoots in a few days. I pick up my rifle this weekend. The trigger is set at 2lbs from the factory.

So my buddy that is building the rifle took it out this morning to test fire the rifle before I pick it up. Keep in mind there has been no bedding of the action in the stock, the stock has only been opened up enough to fit the barreled action. He is shooting crappy factory Remington 140 grain Core Lokt ammo. The first 3 shot group out of the rifle is under 1/2". Here is a pic of the group (crappy pictures...Kevin can build a rifle, but can't take a picture):

I have a B&C stock on my Savage Model 10 and other than the heavy weight, I like the stock.

Thanks for the info. I just checked out the link. I really like the Manners with the thumbhole. My buddy did free float my laminate thumbhole so he can test fire the rifle today. It has not been bedded yet. I am trying to stay on a budget because I still have some additional gear to replace this year and still need to pay for my Wyoming deer and antelope tags (I already drew WY cow elk). I may just bed the laminate stock and use it this year and then get the Manners stock that I really want after this season.
