  1. Many years ago while hunting javelina down in 36b we were just sitting down to lunch in camp when we started to hear classical music blaring out of nowhere. After a few minutes of the music getting louder and closer we started to hear the buzz of a small vehicle. As the vehicle approached we could see that it was one of those Subaru Brats – we were amazed that it could have gotten that far in as the road we came in on was extremely rough. Anyway, when the vehicle stopped next to our camp we could see the gentleman driving the Brat was smoking a Sherlock Holmes type pipe. If that wasn’t weird enough he then stepped out of his “truck” wearing a powder blue polyester tux complete with ruffles. At this point I started to believe I had entered the twilight zone and that it couldn’t get any weirder when he introduced himself in the thickest Scottish accent – it was near impossible to understand a word he said – I wish I could remember his name. After a few minutes of conversation we were able to conclude he was out prospecting for gold and that he was making a run into to town to “partake” of the fairer sex. And with that he was gone. A couple of years later we were in the same area and found his base camp. I don’t think he got much prospecting done as there had to be at least 20 cases of single malt Scotch whisky lying around the crude deck he had built around an old cab-over camper.

    Predtor calling bear

I was researching calling bears last year, unfortunately I was unable to get the time off so I didn't go. One thing that I read numberous times and thought was important is often sows will come into the calls but will tree her cubs before she comes in so it can appear like a sow doesn't have any cubs when she infact does. So try to pass on sows even if she doesn't have cubs with her.

    finally!!

The department of Labor was reporting an unsual day and half spike in productivity in the southwest. Wonder that that was due to?
  4. going to have to agree on a CWT channel for the radios so we can hear how everyone is doing...the unit should be pretty well covered.

    Is anybody else superstitous?

I don't really know if this qualifies but I've always believed that new gear is bad luck. The more expensive the gear is the more bad luck it brings. Case in point...I had a new rifle in last year's deer camp and it jinxed the entire camp...sorry RedRabbit and Sundevil. No one saw a shooter buck (one came close but I wasn't in camp - had to run to work for a day) and I only glassed up two bucks the entire hunt - one the day before the hunt and one that was so far away I think it was in another unit. I will be taking it out to whack a Jackrabbit before the next hunt to break the jinx.

    Native Resident proposal

Nothing a wait period coun't fix. In Utah if you are successful for a premium hunt you have to wait I believe 3 yrs to be eligible again. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes.

300 win mag or 300 wsm?!?

The advantages of the short mag include: - equivalent ballistics with a little less powder (only important if you hand load) - slightly lighter rifle due to the shorter action The disadvatage: - lose some of the "equivalent ballistics" when using heavier/longer bullets due to bullet seating constraints created by the short action. If the gun's primary purpose is to hunt elk, I would say the benefits of the short mag don't out weigh it's disadvatages. If the gun's primary purpose is to hunt deer and you're not using any bullets over 180 grains then I would say it's pretty much a push.

    Native Resident proposal

Absolutely, the guy that has put in for 30 consecutive year without being drawn should receive preference over the guy who has only put in for 5 years. And that's exactly what the current system does. But your proposal wasn't based on the number of years someone has applied - it was based on the number of years a person is a resident. Any system should insure there is no way a non-hunter could get more consideration over an active hunter. Giving points based on nothing more than residency gives every 30 year resident "do gooder" preference over 5 year resident hunters. And if you don't believe a "do gooder" wouldn't apply for a tag to keep it out of the hands of someone who will actually use it I would suggest you review some of the more aggresive animal rights web-sites.

    Native Resident proposal

I don't believe length of residency should have anything to due with the bonus point system. You are assuming that if you've lived in AZ for a long time that you've supported G&F that entire time. I know guys who have lived in AZ for 30 years and have purchased fewer than 5 licenses with even fewer big game tags. Should this guy get preference over the five year resident that puts in every year for all species? I don't think so. I would much prefer to see a system that creates preference for the hardcore hunter over the casual weekend warrior / camp with guns crowd. I think we already have two areas where this is created - first hunters safety point and second loyalty point. I think they could also add some others such as the conservation point that was being discussed. Maybe modify the loyalty point system so that a point is awarded for every 5 years you apply. Do they need to improve the system to give more "consideration" to the more active? Absolutely!! Does it have anything to do with residency? I don't think so.
  10. I think people are confusing hunter preferences with demand. Every leftover tag will be taken within a day of G&F processing the August 4th applications. These units just didn't make peoples top five. I personally don't like the way G&F decides when and where to add tags - regardless every tag will be purchased and they will make their money.

    They are UP online!!!

Final was able to connect with some other hunting partners and they drew the Dec 36C tag as well. That make 4 of us with the same tag - It's going to make for a great camp!

Casey - I'm noticing a trend in most of your recent posts - I'm seeing the phrases "my girlfriend" or "my GF" keeps appearing somewhere in them...are you trying to tell us something?

    Party at Jim Reynolds' house!

Ssshhhhhh! I promised a certain CWT member that is too large for the small sportquad he was riding that I would not let the cat out of the bag over that incident. Its not a bad trail on a 4 x 4 quad with a CVT, but a few spots are a bit tricky for a manual clutch machine. I dont know what/who you are talking about there Sir! Unfortunately, I wont be able to make it this year. My girl friend is the Maid of Honor in one of our friends weddings that same day! PS, if I had MY quad, I would have been good to go! Atleast all got a good laugh out of it, right? I don't know - I don't think there is a quad made that could make it up that last 10" - Don't care how big or if it's 4x4. After it was determined all was good with the rider and most things were good on the quad - I do have to admit I laughed my ARS off!!

    They're Cashing Checks

Receiving them in the mailbox does tend to make one's day much better than a refund check! I don't know Doug - I'm really getting excited to get my refund checks - it's almost like free money. The anticipation of what I can spend the money on is just killing me . I think I might go scouting this weekend for what to buy. Come on refund!!

    What rifle is better!!!

Forgive me but what does a picture of a deer shot in the head have to do with "which rifle..." Don't mean to be a butt just wondering why the pic?

    Storm Destruction

Sorry to see that. I would suggest checking your homeowners insurance to see it they would cover part of the loss. I had some wind damage on an out building (Tuff-Shed) and my homeowners covered it. It may extend to your trailer. May be a long shot but may be surprised.
