So here's the situation... You were fortunate enough to draw a December tag You've hunted the unit in the past You've scouted the unit a number of times already this year You find a big buck - unfortunately he's close to the road so anyone could find him without too much effort There's three hunts in the unit before December You have at least two more scouting trips between now and your hunt You also have friends that have tags in the same unit before your hunt Due to the water situation it's unlikely he will go too far What do you do? Help a friend hang a tag on it? Hope he makes it to December and hunt him? If you don't know if he's been killed how long would you look for him during your December hunt before you move onto a different deer?

What unit is your hunt in? If I'm not mistaken the Dragoon Mtns are in 30B. I know for certain that Dos Cabezas Mtns are in 30A.
-
I saw one of the biggest deer I've ever seen in the Dos Cabezas - we saw it two days in a row and two of us shot at it at least 15 times in those two days but never got him. The next season we both invested in range finders. That use to be a great Mountain to hunt - hope it is again someday.

TTT - for a good guy.

TTT for one of the more helpful guys on the site.

No broken points - it just curves in such a way that it looks like it's broken.

This has been interesting seeing where this has gone... Here's a few answers to questions that were asked: He's Big - not HUGE - I watched him in my scope for two hours and I put him at around 105" others have said smaller but then it's hard to judge from prictures. When I said he was by the road - it is a road that any two wheel drive truck could drive down without any problems - if you didn't care too much about your car a car could make it as well. I would much prefer to see a friend tag the deer than a stranger and I have no fear that time would remove me from the story - If your hunt buddies are like that I would suggest getting new ones - sharing with your buddies is 90% of the hunting fun. I completely agree bucks don't get big by being dumb so there's a good chance he will live another year and if we get rain soon I would expect him to move to a more remote area. The pictures are not the best so you really have to look hard to see the length on his seconds. It's also hard to tell but he is fairly wide being just inside his ears. The way his tine curve make them look shorter than they are. Tell me what you think...

NRA Policy is pretty good and very limited information is required to get your guns covered.

Anyone taking the day off and going out?

I have the same scope on one rifle and had a difficult time with it. I picked up another rifle and put a scope with Target Turrets on it and I must say Turrets are the only way to go. Work up your drop chart and they eliminate all the guess work. Not to mention saves you a ton of ammo trying to figure out what portion of the reticle to use at what ranges. Target Turrets are the answer!

Why on earth would someone bring up a 2 year old pi$$ing match? Don't we have enough current ones to keep us entertained?

I've used these tripod legs for 3 years now and like them very much but have been finding that we are hiking in more remote places these days so I'd like to get a smaller set of legs that will be easier to pack around. Below is a link to the legs specs. The load capacity of these legs is over 15lbs so if you are thinking about using the "Claw" these may be a great set of legs to use with it. Also if you like to glass standing up these legs are great! This model has been replaced by the 055XB Legs which I've found for around $160.00 new. I paid a little less than that 3 years ago. Not really sure what to ask for them so I'll say any reasonable offers will be considered. They function the same as they did the day I took them out of the box but as you know 3 years of scouting and hunting takes a toll on the cosmetics - they do have scratches - nothing major. Please PM any offers. Thanks for looking. http://www.bogenimaging.us/Jahia/site/bius...rom_search=true

That's a nice way to start off the season.

One more go before I start cutting on it. Thanks.

Congrats on a great bull!! I like the heavy fronts. Well done.

Having the same issue. I had to find a link that took me directly to the forum. Coueswhitetail.com won't work. At least for me.

I did the same thing. Just took apart the legs, sawed off about 4" off each section and reassembled. I've thought of doing that but wasn't sure it was possible and was afraid to mess it up to the point it wasn't usable. I'll have to take a leg apart and see how it's put together. How much weight were you able to cut?
-
Sorry No head just the legs.

Added some Pictures. The scratches shown in the picture are the worst ones on them.

A friend of mine has a pair and I was very impressed with them. Also, send BlackDog a PM - he use to rep sporting optics for Nikon and can provide you with some good info. He's not on the site too often so it may take a few days for him to respond but he would be a good source for info.

What contributes most to harvesting MONSTER BUCKS
scoutm replied to coues7's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Thomas Jefferson: "I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more luck I have." Coach Darrel Royal: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Seems like to be lucky (consistently) one must work hard so I would say - Scouting and practicing all the skills necessary to be successful - Glassing & Shooting is what it takes. But then again my biggest buck was taken on my first ever WT hunt with open Iron sites. So like they say even a blind squirrel can find a few nuts.
